Total Time = 1h 28m 55s
Overall Rank = 131/270
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 12/17
Swim
  • 08m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started to the outside based on advice for new swimmers, but ended up right in the middle of things almost immediately. No stress, no issues with getting kicked, bumped, etc., no issues with the occasionally wave interrupting my breathing. In retrospect far more comfortable than I would have expected for a first tri.
What would you do differently?:

Start on the inside - just get in the middle of it and swim like hell.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Shoes were rubber-banded parallel to ground, got a running start, feet in shoes within a few hundred yards of exiting T1, smooth, no issues.
What would you do differently?:

Put shirt on top of helmet - started to buckle helmet before I had my shirt on, had to re-do that. Otherwise solid.
Bike
  • 53m 22s
  • 16 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Solid ride, probably a little harder in the first half than the second, but better than I expected. Calves were cramping in the second half and into T2, but no issues on the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Run
  • 23m 59s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow, I was hurting, but kept pushing and didn't let up - great feeling
Post race
Event comments:

Why no beer garden? Bold City was at the last one and I was really looking forward to a post-race draft.

Generally great race though - pleased at how comfortable I felt in my first ocean swim, faster than I expected on the bike and run segments. Good times all around.

Nice race. Congrats. Just curious, why don't you swim with shirt on? Saves some time in transition if you wear tri shirt.

Thanks - don't have a tri top, I used a swimsuit (jammer) and just pulled on a shirt afterwards. Might spring for a real top or trisuit though, that would save time.

I know it is tough getting a shirt on especially when you are wet.

Good luck.

Great race! Good splits! I tend to pack a bevi in a cooler at these things as you can never totally count on their being a garden. What's next?

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?

A 26 week, 6 race series plan for faster performance. A SILVER/GOLD member plan.
