I might find this to actually be a blessing... As long as I could salvage some of the select contents.

You mean like the Picasso that was hungover the chimney and had been in the family for decades that is being reported to insurance?

Sadly, I used to work for the City and County of Denver (Colorado).  I wrote software, and worked on an application associated with the permitting department.  I was amazed that there was no proof of ownership necessary to get a demolition permit, or any building permit.  So while the mistake hasn't occurred, I could in theory take out a permit to demo someone's house.  Granted they would have my DL and such, but that could be faked.

Kind of surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Wow...so the legal exposure the city would have issuing a demo permit like that.....lol. Your right, I'm surprised a loop hole like that isn't tightened up. Whether the city is really at fault or not, I could see them ending up in front of a court an awful lot if there were more unscrupulous people out there!

We got 3 months of lawn and tree care a few years ago - despite calling to try and correct the error a few times.

I was working with a landscaper helping for a few months. We missed on the driveway and dug it on the property line. That wasn't fun to have to go back and fix.

Sounds like they will be suing for a liiiiitle more than the actual value of the structure to me.
