Pre-race routine:

After spending Friday sneezing and sniffling, I awoke at 5:30am Saturday feeling like I was hit by a train in my sleep. The lower half of my face was caked with mucous and my voice was gone. The sheets and my pajamas were drenched with sweat. But I had paid ninety dollars to register for this premier running event practically out my back door, so I was bound and determined to tough it out.
I tore apart both bathrooms scavenging for any type of cold or flu medicine I could find, I finally settled on Benadryl, equate sinus and cough medicine. I also took some immodium and ginger to combat and G.I. side effects that might arise. I had no appetite, so had a few bites of a dry bagel.
Event warmup:

The start area was so crowded, so I warmed up away from the crowds so that I could blow multiple snot rockets in peace.

Comments:

By the time the gun went off, I was simultaneously shivering and sweating, even though it was cold and drizzly. I planned on 7:20 or so average pace. Within the first couple miles, I knew that was not in the card. By Mile 6, I started to see yellow stars. That's when my race ended. I pulled up into a walk. There was no short cut back to the car, and no where to hitch a ride. That's when the rain started. Like a dummy, I had worn a cotton long-sleeved t-shirt. Those were the coldest, most miserable 7 miles of my life. I would walk a while, until I was shivering uncontrollably, and then break into a jog to warm up. I would jog until I was almost ready to faint, and then walk. It was a vicious circle. There were a lot of negative thoughts in my head, and I probably wasn't a good sport about runners coming by and saying things like, "You can do this!" Finally, at mile 12 I saw a friend doing his first half marathon and was able to jog in with him.
What would you do differently?:

Be healthy. Slowest HM of my life by 20 minutes- not a great day, lol!
Post race
Warm down:

Drove home asap and straight into a hot bath for an hour. I'd spend the next four days sick with the flu.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Health. Running with the flu is not a wise decision.

Event comments:

You can't fault this race. COurse is hilly but everything is top-notch and organized like a dream.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
