I think he likely didn't research what that trip would entail very well. Protein bars and bottled water aren't nearly enough, even if he had been able to navigate against the Gulf Stream's current and any winds. It's as if he looked at the distance on a map and said "I can run that far". I'll applaud his ambition, but not his wisdom.

Agreed.  Not a good sign when he is spotted off of the coast of Miami asking for directions to Bermuda.
