Plymouth Sprint Triathlon - Triathlon

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 50s
Overall Rank = 24/109
Age Group = 50+
Age Group Rank = 2/12
Pre-race routine:

I got to the race site around 6:40. Many people were already there. This was so different than the West Point Triathlon. It wasn't USAT sanctioned, much smaller (was told 150 participants versus the 700+), and a tad disorganized being this was only the 2nd running of the event. Still though, I was told compared to last year there were many more experienced triathletes.

With this being only my second triathlon, there were a couple of new wrinkles I hadn't seen before. No excuses, but they slowed me down in places. And as you know, I could probably say it's the first triathlon I competed in. I got well needed experience at West Point, but didn't race MY race.
Event warmup:

Light jogging, and a quick swim
Swim
  • 12m 23s
  • 536 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

The new wrinkle for me was everyone went in at the same time as opposed to smaller waves. I could never find a clear place to swim. Lots of bumping into other swimmers that never ended. I didn't feel as "off" as at West Point, but all the same had to flip on the back a few times to settle down. The one thing I liked was swimming clockwise, so every breath could see the shore and it enabled me to have much better sighting.
What would you do differently?:

I need to take a Masters swim class as I have no real experience in the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

I couldn't get wet suit over timing chip on ankle.
What would you do differently?:

Since timing chip had Velcro, should have removed it.
Bike
  • 34m 44s
  • 11.09 miles
  • 19.16 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed a lot of people, and only got passed by one person. Rolling hills. Felt pretty good like I have in training. I kept a good pace, and slowed down a tad last mile to conserve energy for the run.
What would you do differently?:

With the Specialized Sirrus flat bar commuter bike I have, I cannot expect much more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Just an average transition.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Run
  • 27m 57s
  • 3.45 miles
  • 08m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

This had more hills than the bike, and I would say was moderately difficult. I went out pretty solid and was able to keep my "hope for" 10-mile pace of 7:45 and faster. But to my surprise, at mile two it became a mile of a trail run (didn't read about that), something I don't do. Plus, this trail had soft sand, big rocks, and many crevices. It definitely slowed me down due to my inexperience, and jaded fear due to previous leg injuries. The combination of the trail and hills made me feel really gassed, but I kept going knowing my pace was in the higher 8's. Once the trail was cleared, the last mile I picked it up again and was running under 7:30 for the last mile or so.
What would you do differently?:

Wasn't expecting a trail. Other than that, fairly happy.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching; recovery drink

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience in swimming and trail running; equipment (bike)

Event comments:

It was a fun race and it was billed that way. Challenging bike and run with the hills. I cannot complain as this was my first competitive triathlon. I ran the West Point Triathlon a few weeks ago, but did that side-by-side with my daughter (who is much slower). To come in 24th overall (top 25%) and place 2nd in the Masters Division was a good accomplishment for me.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
