Your FIRST challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to score at least 20 triathlon specific workout DAYS out of the 31 possible in May.

Workouts must be in the disciplines of swim, bike, and run/walk. Strength training is optional and may be scored as a workout. Sports days (like my kayaking) DO NOT count.

No more than 12 workout days may be in any one discipline. Bricks are excluded from this limit.

You must score at least one workout in each discipline per week.

You should not have more than 2 rest days in any one week.

Please note, we are counting DAYS not workouts. So if you do two workouts in one day, it still only counts as ONE DAY. The idea behind this challenge is to build consistency.

The SECOND half of the challenge is to take your distance totals for each discipline last month and increase them by at least 10%. Now, as those of you who have followed my challenges know, I have been out of the game for a time.  So I'm going to rewind and use my February totals and March goals as a starting point:
Bike: 3h 55m 27s - 49 Mi May: 55 miles
Run: 9h 46m 34s - 32.6 M May: 35 miles

Obviously I need to work on the swim discipline.

1/20 - Nothing impressive, other than FINALLY doing a workout after school.

WALK

  • 2.00 miles
  • 18m 36s /Mi

2/20 - Nothing special. Just two miles in the 50* drizzly rain.

Saturday

Bike
  • 42m 27s
  • 9.00 miles
  • 12.72 Mi/hr

3/20 - Breathing heavy, but not dying. Could barely walk without leaning on the bike. Legs are going to need some serious roadwork before the Lumberjack in August.

Sunday

WALK
  • 35m 11s
  • 2.00 miles
  • 17m 35s /Mi

4/20 - Okay, that was working it a bit too hard. 45 mins of EIA tells me it was too soon to go that hard.

I'm curious about the 'don't increase your run by more than 10% per week' rule. Is there a minimum mileage under which this doesn't apply?

Most people believe that running barefoot is dangerous. Certainly, depending upon the surface, they would be correct. However, there is some suggestion that running barefoot may reduce injuries.

A quick and easy 20 minute at home strength training workout. This is a freeweight workout, so only a few dumbbells are needed.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

How should I go about training for the marathon while also building base in the other two events? Doing this seems like it's causing me to break the 10% rule in running.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.

Yes, the Dual is a little heavier than Cervèlo’s high end counterparts. But…the price is within reach of the masses and it still incorporates all of the design features that make a Cervèlo special.
