Maryland Heights, Missouri
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 11m 9s
Overall Rank = 336/462
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 10/16
Pre-race routine:

Wake up and drive from hotel to race site. Drink some Beet Elite, eat a protein bar, set up transition. Met with some fellow Base Performance athletes.
Event warmup:

Light stretches
Swim
  • 36m 42s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 27s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was a little long based off my Garmin and time. Felt pretty good considering the relative lack of swim-focus this year. Was catching people from the previous 2 waves. Felt like I took a pretty good line around the course close to the buoy line. With 350m left the sprint athletes merged with us, this part of the course was slow due to having to dodge a lot of slower swimmers.
What would you do differently?:

Line up at the front of my wave.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

I have sensitive feet and the long walk on concrete sucked for me, I as in the last rack on far end of transition. Wetsuit got stuck on my timing chip (race used disposable timing chips).
Bike
  • 1h 15m 29s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 19.71 mile/hr
Comments:

How hard is it for slower people or people not passing staying to the right? Holy shit, the 1st loop was a clusterfuck with people riding slow as hell wherever they pleased. 2nd loop was better once I was ahead of sprinters and some of the earlier waves of Olympic racers. Hydration sucked with my new Profile Designs BTA system. I hate the bite valve and flexible straw, can't get enough water without a focused effort. Most of my hydration/nutrition came from my Base Rocket Fuel mix in my downtube bottle.
What would you do differently?:

Planning on changing the straw out on the Profile Design BTA system before Madison in 3 weeks. My voice was hoarse after the race from having to tell people to ride to the right and yelling "on your left" repeatedly... people probably thought I was an asshole, but I'm ok with that.
Transition 2
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Took extra time putting socks on.
Run
  • 1h 11m 51s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt decent, I'm just slow as hell.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a beer, packed my gear and left. With the wife and 2 kids (3 & 8) along I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs are crappy from marathon training... they feel decent but that's about as good as it gets.

Event comments:

Great race, fun course. A little more time between Olympic and sprint starts to avoid congestion on the swim. Run aid station 1 was out of water on my 1st pass. Run is on a MUP that was full of families and pissed of bikers not realizing they're in the middle of a race.

Glad to see this.
I like this race. Best racks in the business. For those who've not done it....they use 2x4s and a rebar hoop for your back tire. Everyone gets space....more than enough space. All bikes fit. Just gobs of room. Yah, the swim and first part of the bike is congested, but they do that for a couple reasons. Easier swim safety....and it allows them to virtually shut down one of the top 5? busiest roads in the area spanning at least two different municipalities.

The RD really dots Is and crosses Ts. It's a race for US. Yah, the run on the MUP is a little odd. But, worse for "them" than "us". Still a new race in just it's second year. It's going to be really fun to watch this race over time.

You've got a race of what....600-800 doing Olympic, sprint AND an Exterra to boot. And you're parking all of 200 feet from your transition spot? Yowza. I'll take that.

A great addition to our local scene, for sure.
