 1 |  Subject: Bike Advice..good bike/good deal?Hello all; long time reader, first time poster. I registered for the 2018 Arizona IM today, and I'm thinking about the 2018 SuperFrog 70.3 as well. I have a background in distance running and swimming, but no so much in cycling. I am shopping for a bike at the moment. I found a used bike (private seller) and would like some feedback on whether this is 1. A good bike for a full IM and 2. A fair price. Here's what BikeRumor had to say about that bike on a "long term review" (which you may already have read): https://www.bikerumor.com/2013/08/13/review-raleighs-revenio-4-0-carbon/ Seems to be a fair price if the bike is in good condition. As for whether it's a good choice for a full IM... With a set of short clip-ons, it may be just the ticket for you. All with the over-arching caveat of "if it fits you". A "good bike for an Ironman" is one that you can ride comfortably for 5-6 hours on and is maintained well enough to not break down on you during the race. There are some fit calculators that can translate your measurements into bike measurements. If it fits, it's probably worth considering. Probably best to speak with a fitter at your local shop to get some ideas of what is feasible or not to get a reasonable fit. As for maintenance...you're in control of that element with whatever bike you get. I'd recommend a tune-up about 3 weeks before your IM (basically, right after your last long ride). Not sure what your bike budget it or where this $1000 fits that budget. For the same money, you could buy an entry level road bike (Aluminum frame, carbon fork, Sora/Tiagra or equivalent components). You'd probably have a hard time finding a "recognizable" (Trek/Cervelo/Felt) name used bike with those components at anything less than twice that price. Raleigh makes some good bikes. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: Bike Advice..good bike/good deal? I agree with what others have said. You might visit your local bike shop and let them know what you're looking at. Tell them you plan to bring it in for a fitting if you buy it (I highly recommend getting fit on any bike you get). Since they'll make money off the fitting, they might be inclined to help you. All you really need to know from them is whether or not this bike is the right size/geometry for you. If possible, find the geometry specs of the bike and take with you. |
