Pre-race routine:

Had the rest of my cinnamon roll and then headed out to the race course. Took my time setting up due to lingering rain. Was excited to see Liam signing up to race at check in, haven't gone against him in a long time. I knew I didn't have much chance to beat him on this course with the extra long bike and short run, but still.
Event warmup:

No wetsuits (2nd time this summer), so did a little swim warm up, ~100yds.
Swim
  • 15m 59s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really poor swim. I tried to stay on Liam's feet and that lasted about 50 yards. After that I was completely alone. I could see two guys ahead, but no one else around. Tried to swim hard and stay straight as best I could. Even if the course was a little longer today, I still couldn't believe I was 4 minutes slower than last year. Guess that shows how much a wetsuit and solid drafting matter.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not wear my tri top as it probably added some drag.
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

No wetsuit so this was pretty simple. Passed a guy who was having trouble mounting his bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 51m 22s
  • 18 miles
  • 21.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Once again fell short of my power goals in a race. Averaged 200, normalized 207. I knew Liam crushed the swim, and I had to keep it close on the bike to have any shot at getting him on the run. At the turnaround I clocked him at 2:00-2:15 ahead of me. Probably too much I figured. Tried to keep the pace hard throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder, though maybe all the downhills factor into keeping the power a little lower than goal.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Perfect, fastest in the race. 38 seconds faster than Liam, free speed if I'm gonna beat him in these shorter distances one day.

Also, passed the kid who got me late in the bike in transition here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 18m 1s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Hit the pavement hard and just kept pushing. Coming out of transition Danielle said the gap was "big", so didn't have much hope of catching Liam. At the school I caught sight of Liam and was about 2:45 behind him at that point. Way too much. Just kept running hard knowing people from other waves would be coming for my podium spot.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and chatted with Liam and others about the race. Ended up losing by 75 seconds after running 2:25 faster than him. We will see what happens at Lake George in 2 weeks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Really would like to hit my power goal on one of these shorter races, but otherwise a really good race all things considered. Had a heavy week of training and have not focused on short course speed.

Event comments:

Really love this race, the venue, and the volunteers. I do feel like the post race food gets worse each year. Bananas and bagels with cream cheese or butter (not even PB!!) were all they had. That's like 5K style. But otherwise no complaints, and the rain held out during the race itself.
