Subject: butt question (not for the faint of heart)
Hey Guys,

So this is a pretty awkward question, but i gotta ask while im still a newbie, so I'll just come out with it. After riding my bike, throughout the day I'll have a sharp pain (3 or 4 times a day, for a second or two) near my anus, then it goes away. This has been going on for about 2 weeks. Does this have anything to do with my riding position, or possibly a strain from lifting weights in addition to riding. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it an internal pain or on the skin?

I'm not a doctor, but I've had a few problems in that area as well. I was diagnosed with colitis. Hopefully not something you have but if this persists, you might try talking to a doctor and getting yourself checked out.

It may just be a skin thing. I don't believe it's too uncommon for some skin breaks to occur with the addition of more time in the saddle. You could try some chamois cream, body glide, or even something like Preparation H for lube and moisture in that area.

If it's an internal pain, it could be cramping. Are you drinking enough? Getting a good amount of fiber?

Has there been any change in your anal tissue that corresponds with this pain? Do you feel pain if you push on that area? Have you had any bleeding or bloody or dark stool? (These may all be indicators of internal/external hemorroids or colitis.)

I had something called a palodinal cyst, its a cyst that developes at the base of the tail bone. It is pretty painful when pressure is put on it., although the the thing you have sounds further south than this. Heres a link for a little more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilonidal_cyst

Good luck with everything

It sounds like something spasms of the muscles surrounding the anus. It may be caused by your new habit of biking. Or it could be irritation of the prostate that is causing it, you can also get prostatic infections, which are difficult to treat. Many male cyclists have chronic inflammation of the prostate as well.

Here is an entertaining summary of a study to relieve levator ani spasm in male volunteers. I'll let you sort out the details...

Levator syndrome. A treatment that works.

Nicosia JF, Abcarian H

Forty-five patients with levator syndrome were treated by high voltage
electrogalvanic stimulation of the levator ani by means of an intra-anal probe.
Voltage varied from 150 to 400 volts, depending on patient tolerance. Negative
electrodes and 80 cycles per second were used for 20 minutes every other day.
An average of five treatments was needed for complete pain relief. Excellent
results (total pain relief) were obtained in 36 patients, good results in five,
fair results in two, and poor results (no relief) in two. High voltage
electrogalvanic stimulation is the treatment of choice for levator syndrome
because it can be standardized, is well tolerated, and is over 90 percent
effective.

I've had a similar, somewhat chronic problem/pain to what you are describing.  A few years back I fell down a flight of stairs on my butt and broke my tailbone, which started it all.  (I will not detail what PT for that injury was like.  I'll just say that if it had to be done, I'm glad a 73-year-old female PT treated me!

There is a ligament that attaches to the tailbone and some muscles that attach to it that can actually spasm and hurt from imbalance, trauma, or even the bike seat.  I've had some massage therapy for my hip area and related muscles, which helped.  If it really is a similar problem, I would definitely get your seat/bike fit checked-out, because that could be contributing if not causing it.  No medically related degree here, just a fellow sufferer.  haha.

p.s. I think AdventureBear's post should win a prize.
