molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: FRANCE goes smoke free FRANCE!!!! i guess if the irish can deal with having a pint without a smoke, the french can deal with having an cafe au lait without one. France to Go Smokefree Restaurants, bars, and nightclubs given until January 2008 France, 11/16/06-- It's official. Today, France published details of its new smokefree workplace decree. Beginning February 1, 2007, workplaces other than restaurants, bars and nightclubs, must be smokefree. Beginning January 1, 2008, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs have to be smokefree. The law also requires the outdoor areas of educational institutions other than universities to be smokefree. "Congratulations to the French government for recognizing that workers deserve protection from cancer-causing substances in the workplace," says Joe Cherner, president of SmokeFree Educational Services, Inc. "We only wish that restaurant, bar, and nightclub workers were covered sooner." France joins Ireland, Italy, Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Norway, Sweden, Finland, New Zealand, Bermuda, Uganda, Malta, Uruguay, Hong Kong, and Bhutan in enacting comprehensive smokefree workplace legislation, including smokefree restaurants and bars. Extreme Veteran 426 Bay Area- California | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free It's smokefree in all the above here in California. I just looooovvve it! Gone are the days when you have to fumegate your clothes after going to a club or dinner. Oh wait, gone are my days of going to any clubs ( replaced by PBS Goodnight Show). But I still like it. |

molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free that sounds familiar! i used to get ready to go out around 10pm. now i'm asleep by then...after reading chapters from charlotte's web and the like, and some indulgent 'grown up' time watching 'the office' and drinking wine...and falling asleep. woo hoo! |

Expert 634 Toronto | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free Wow! So if I read that right, they were allowed to smoke in the workplace until now? If so, that's amazing. I can't believe that. Crazy. I used to be a smoke many years ago but now I can't stand the smell of it. I always hated coming home from a restaurant or bar or club and stinking like smoke. I could not go to sleep like that and had to take a shower and get that smell out of my body and hair. Anyway, I'm sure there are lots of folks in France all up in arms over this. |

Extreme Veteran 452 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free WE WIN!!!!!! (People with lungs, that is). I would have thought France would be the last to give in. Clean air in the rest of the world in now just a formality. Yah!!! D edit - yes there are still many places where smoking is allowed in the workplace. Last time I was in London, people had no smoking signs in their offices to let colleaugues know not to light up. Edited by herridge 2006-11-17 9:51 AM |

Someone has obviously not seen nor smelled the Parisian women (that aren't 85 years old). Dude, if you want to see sexy, you need to get there ASAP. They're HOTT. Venezuela ain't too shabby either but you're far more likely to be shot on the street there. |

Extreme Veteran 413 | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free I have to go to Paris for work about once a month and most of the people I meet smoke in their office. They often ask me if I mind and I invariably say I don't because I'm English and we don't say what we mean we say what we think the other person wants to hear…. I was talking to a Parisian colleague the other day and he has no intention of stopping and neither do any of his colleagues. |

Been to Paris NUMEROUS times. I LOVE the smell of BO and Urine on the subway. That was my point. Many Europeans use cologne and perfume avery day without bathing and it is obnoxious. About the cleanest people in the sense of hygiene that I have met are the Japanese. The toilets rock over there!!!! |

Take a breath mate - you've had a pop at the French and now you've lobbed "many Europeans" into the mix. I'm happy to report and after conducting far lenghtier and extensive research than you ever will that the vast majority of Europeans - including the French - are just as hygenic as the rest of the modern world. I mean, I had a bath on Tuesday and it wasn't even my birthday. I even got out of it to take a . You can't get more diligently hygenic than that. |

Yeah, me too. Although I have to admit, I don't really see the appeal of a rocking toilet. |

molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free i wonder what kind of reinforcement there will be of the law. i know in australia, a business was sued and lost by a non-smoker employee who developed lung cancer from workplace second hand smoke. could be that countries are passing these laws to a) protect the public and b) protect businesses and their own butts from lawsuits (i love politics). my guess is that if there is a law saying 'no smoking' and people still do, they can only sue each other...not the business or the state. hmmm. |

Elite 3067 Cheesehead, WI | Subject: RE: FRANCE goes smoke free Sacre bleu...no smoking in France? Wow! I remember smoking and having coffee in Paris...seemed 'so French'... but I quit smoking over 10 years ago. And French people are clean - ok so maybe the entire world is not like the US where people shower daily or in some cases 2 times daily but they are clean. Think bidet? Besides... the French have wonderful bread, culture, and the French I've known are warm, kind hearts with a great sense of humor. |
