I just adopted a 10 year old!!!   bird

His name Arbie and he's a 10 year old Blue Crown Pionus.  He spent the first 9 years of his life as a breeder bird with very little human contact.  Recently his owner surrendered him to a couple who own a local bird store who are friends of ours.  When they first got him, he couldn't be handled.  Approaching his cage would send him into a frenzy of fear and flapping.  Being bird people, they managed to tame restore his trust in the human race over the course of several months, but he still isn't 100%.

A few weeks ago, Laura and I were in to visit and buy food for Tony (my other bird).  Arbie was out on the play table for some socal time and flapped to the ground as she walked past.  Not knowing about his timidness, she reached down and had him step up to put him back and he calmly did.  Apparently, that was the first time he had stepped up for a 'stranger'.  After that, she was sold on him and after almost daily visits over the past few weeks, we brought him home today.

Cute. I don't know anything about birds - except for what I've learned during my recent turkey buzzard and wild turkey attacks - is he the kind that can learn to speak?

That's so cool about him stepping up to your wife. It's meant to be....

Enjoy!

thanks guys.  He's a really sweet bird.  He still has some trust issues, so we have to be carefull to make sure nothing happens to harm his trust in us.

He 'can' talk.  Pionus aren't known to be big talkers like African Greys, but he should pick up a few words.  When he's all alone and doesn't think anyone is listening, he says 'peek-a-boo' and this grumbly conversation that is hard to make out.  We think we've heard a 'hi, how are you' and a 'good boy' in there somewhere, but it's not clear at all.

That's so cool. I love how he does it when he thinks no one is listening. I hope he soon overcomes his trust issues.

Very nice.  I have thought about a bird off and on over the years, but so far have not acted on it due to a slight fear I have.  I wish I knew someone who had birds so that I could work on that. I'd love to have one.  I'm not sure a lot of people realize how intelligent birds are and how they bond with their humans.

My husband had a bird many years ago before I met him, he was giving her an interim home because her owner died (friend of a friend) and his sister (who had birds) couldn't take her right away.  She fell head over heals in love with him.  She would groom him when she sat on his shoulder - if he did not give her what she considered enough attention, she would turn her back on him when he approached the cage to take her out, (but she always forgave him) and when he would blow dry his hair, she would sit on his shoulder, and spread her wings out as wide as they would go, so that he could blow dry her, too!  He ended up keeping her for longer than expected, and did not really want to give her up when it was time to go.  She never bonded with his sister, and then one time when they went on vacation and left her with friends to watch, they let her get out of the cage and their dog killed her.  My husband was hearbroken and wished he'd never given her up.
