Subject: Pool Running
I just got back from a swim workout at the Y after reading these posts about injuries and not being able to train. While I was swimming I saw a couple people running laps of the pool with those floaty belts on. I have never done this type of training but it makes a lot of sense to me; no impact, more resistance and an exact duplication of the running movement. This would also allow an uninjured runner to log more running hours and not get injured in the first place. Has anyone done or had any sucess with this type of training?

Running outside is necessary. Your need to get your body used to the pounding. Your body will compensate by building stronger joints and bones to compensate.

Running in a pool is a completely different resistance (more muscular than skeletal), so IMO it is a completely different animal, and I don't see that there will necessarily be any beneficial carryover from running i the pool to running outside.

Pool sprinting can be very beneficial to sprinting. But, sprinting and endurance running are very different also.

Now, long distance running on a beach, cross-country, etc will encourage changes that are beneficial to running (stronger calves, stronger ankles, etc)
