Member 531 New Hampshire | Subject: Another fat boy checks in HI all I’ve just signed up for this site and am / will be reading all the stories and posts for inspiration. I’m Mike and up until July last year was your average overweight potbellied, beer drinking smoking fitness critic! Well I’ve quit smoking (nearly 6 months now) and I play volleyball to keep active during the winter but the rest remains as above!!! So I’m here to do something about it. I was supposed to start this week but broke 2 toes in an accident last weekend – should be ok to get going by this weekend though. There’s a fuller explanation in the Training logs for me / about me but I thought I’d make the most of your welcome forum. I am looking forward to the journey ahead and I shall slowly let myself into the posting as I begin to understand the dynamics and language that you have here. This is kinda daunting and fun at the same time. If you can’t access the full expaination and STILL want to read more then let me know and I’ll copy and paste it here. Mike |

Champion 13323 | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in great story in you log! welcome to the site! fyi people, upon seeing Mikes logs (lengthy comments that we love!) i hope to be adding 'HTML area' to only the main comment sections of the blog so we have paragraphing, font styles, tables and pictures to play with... |

Member 531 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in Oops- sorry – Didn’t even think of the html issues. I’ve started a word doc with formatting etc but done it in a style that means I can upload it to a web page instead of just writing it in html. Of course for here I just did a copy and paste (see the signs of being a lazygit yet?). I’m make everything else a bit more friendly to read! |

Champion 13323 | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in actually its not your fault. its on my end...being new, still working out some 'issues' hope to get it cleared up in a month with the new feautures. the HTML area is a converter to use html along with regular doc stuff to make it look like a real document...now it is without formatting and paragraphing...my fault. |

Member 531 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in Thanks Cameron – yeah this really is about taking my life back. I’ve put too much crap in in and I need to change that. One of the things that I have to bear in mind when training gets hard or I don’t want to get out of bed to run is that I WANT to do this. This is for me. I was down the space coast at xmas -you’ve got much better conditions for training at the moment than we have in the northeast!!! -11f this morning!!!! Ouch. |

Expert 713 Rockledge, Fl | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in To have specific goals is a big help to me. One reason for me to start BFL besides getting fat last Jan was my cholesterol. It will go over 300 no matter how much exercise I am doing. I didn't want to take the meds because they upset my stomach. I was able to lower cholesterol from 314 to 185 with no meds in 12 weeks from diet. When I am really tired, I will sometimes visualize my arteries hardening and getting clogged up and that will help. Another trick is to visualize a big glob of lard in your belly and that will help me train harder to get rid of it. I visualize it melting as I go :-) Where on the Space Coast were you? I've done the cold thing and moved back (VA, IL, ID, WA) |

I know how hard that is, since I'm still going through the "withdrawls", myself. And great log entry, I enjoyed reading it. |

Member 46 SoCal | Subject: Yet another fat boy checks in Hello, everybody. I'm another "man of girth". When I was younger and fairly fit I saw a triathlon event and I was immediately enthralled. I considered training for one and then promptly fell off my motorcycle and ended up out of commission for 9 months. From there my fitness went on a downhill slide. I'm 36, 5'9", 285 lbs. I'm down 12 lbs since I started exercising and eating right 3 weeks ago. I've got a Dr's appt. tomorrow morning so that I can get his clearance to start training. There's a sprint TRI in late September and I WILL be in it. p.s., I was totally inspired by Michael Pate's book "When Big Boys Tri". |

Member 531 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in hey Ellen - I'm in New Hampshire - looking for a sprintt event in September. I will bear in mind the specific goals. Eating healthier is one of them! As for the fitness- lets see what I can do then set goals from there - high enough to challenge and low enough to be achievable :-) |

You spin the serum to precipitate the cholesterol, and we did it on a fasting sample - chol. drops out nicely. We repeated on a labmates serum 45 min after eating a cheesesteak and there was so much chol in serum it wouldn't even spin out. I mean this guys blood looked like soup. Was at least a week before I ate another cheasesteak. |

Member 531 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in Hey Ellen – thanks for that – straight into my tri favourites boomark folder. The timberman looks like it could be a good one. It’s a month before the one I was planning on (Goffstown YMCA) so I guess it will depend on my fitness levels, healing of broken toes etc etc. Open question – If I did a sprint Tri in Aug – my first – as a beginner would it be too much to expect to do another 3 or 4 weeks later. Assuming I can train for the first one would the second be too close behind it? Or am I looking for excuses??? :D |

Resident Matriarch N 43° 32.927 W 071° 24.431 | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in Mike, glad you liked the link. I hadn't looked at it myself for a while and have to admit I was intrigued. As for your question, it is definately possible to do sprints 3 or 4 weeks apart. You'll be the best judge of how your fitness is coming along and if you're ready for it, but I wouldn't worry about doing it. The thing to be concerned with is the race filling up. A lot of the races around here fill up months before the event. That makes scheduling and planning difficult when you have to be choosing your races in february so you won't be shut out. If you find something you want to do, don't think about it for too long. Ellen |

I can't remember...did you say Lipitor bothered your stomach? If I remember right it can be taken on an empty stomach or with food, so maybe you could play around with that. |

Expert 713 Rockledge, Fl | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in I had tried Zocor and Lipitor in past years. Last Jan I went on nutrition and training plan (BFL) and lowered it without drugs. I do take Red YEast Rice though. Don't know which helps most, but I know nutrition, training, and red yeast rice together lowered it from 314 to 185 in less than 12 weeks! Much better than meds. |

Extreme Veteran 406 Boise Idaho | Subject: RE: Another fat boy checks in Welcome Mike!!! I know what it is like to be a man of girth! Thus the nickname hehe. This site rules for motivation and everyone is so nice and supportive. I just recently started and I am surprised how fast it is coming along. So far I have dropped 30 pounds and that was just was from changing my diet! So I am excited to see what happens now that I am training regularly! Cant wait. Hang in there and I am sure I will see you around because this is some addicting stuff! Jack Lavoie. |
