Saturday is going to be my first race of the season and I have really just been focusing on getting back in shape after my surgery the last two months. Well yesterday a friend of mine mentioned that since we have been having a lot of cooler weather the he would highly recommend me seeing if I could borrow a wet suit for this weekend. So far I have contacted some folks I know local, but I am pretty sure that nothing is going to work out in time. I am trying to convince myself that I can stand the temp for 500 meters, and it won't be that bad. By the way this is in Lubbock, TX where we usually are in the high 90's this time of year. So please someone reassure me that it won't be too bad. Even though I will probably be the only idiot without a wet suit!

1. You most likely will not be the only person there without a wet suit.

2. You'll be able to handle the water temp fine over that distance.  Try to get in before the race so you're not shocked once the race starts.

3. Everyone in a wet suit will think you're a tough guy becuase you can do the swim without one.

You're a medium-sized dog with a rocket strapped to it's back. What could go wrong?

You won't likely be the only one without a wetsuit. Get in a little practice beforehand so you can catch your breath. 500 meters is short, but it's a long way to go if you can't catch your breath (trust me on that one...). Good luck!

You will be fine. I was one of a few without a wetsuit in September in Minnesota, and everything turned out fine. A few people told me I looked tough.

You will be fine.

Try to get a bit of a warmup swim before the race so that you are used to the temps when your wave enters the water.

Also think about having something to help you keep warm on first part of the bike. You might be a bit hypothermic and it will take you a bit of time to get your core temp back up. (Especially if the air temps are cool)

Arm Warmers are great for this. Once your core temp rises, you can strip them off and switch into keeping cool mode.

Everyone keeps saying you can handle it but your post doesnt say what the temperature of the water is anticipated to be.

If it is in the low 60's and up, yeah, you should be fine. Below 60 is COLD even at 500 meters. Really depends on you though as well. Some people can take it, some cant.

2 years ago I did a sprint, sans wet suit, in 62 degree water. I was pretty much fine after doing a short warm up swim and getting my body used to the water. Others were crying like babys while in a wetsuit.

You will make conversation though I am sure. people will ask if you are nuts. Just say yeah.

Try to get into the water a few days before the race and just splash around for 5-10 minutes. Once or twice before the race will make the temp much less of a shock come race day. Worked great for me at Alcatraz last year!

Thanks for all of the reassurance. I am ready to get the first race of my season underway. I will make sure and write up the swim conditions in my race report.
