Subject: target heart rate for swim/bike /run
i've been doing some investigation into target heart rates. I thought that for all disciplines it was the same however today i discovered that when one cycles its is five beats lower from your target (be it 60% through to 85% your HRmax) and for swimming it is a surprising 10 beats off. I can't seem to understand why this is. does anyone know?

in addition i find that when i run my 30 minute blocks my heart rate is between 160 and 170 which is certainlyin the 85% area for my age range -- i am 36 and consider myself fit. after one minute from stopping the run and going into my cool down brisk walk my heart drops to 115/ 120 beats per minute. after five minutes i stay at about 100/ 110 for about 30 minutes (while cooling down and stretching) and within an hour i am at +/-
70. my question is that while i am running although i am maxing my heart rate i can still do pass the talk while running test....i am pushing myself but i know i can put out more.... but to do that my heart rate would get too close to my maximum heart rate..... its like my legs and lungs and mind are willing to push it but are restricted by this measure of the heart rate. when i was younger i really didn't pay attention to the heart rate because i was given more room --- when your 20 you can push to 185 and still be fine..... at 36 if you listen to the rules you have reached your absolute max heart rate at 185 from running. what i have heard is that this rule of 220 - your age is just generic and that there are many 40 year olds who can function well at pushing their heart rate to 200 to get the Vo2Max......

i welcome your comments.....

kalle,

an awesome article written by coach scott herrick on the main site at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/scott.htm

this is an excerpt from it that will answer your question

Myth: You have a single maximum heart rate number that can be applied to all activities. When people talk about their Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) what they really mean, whether they know it or not, is that MHR really only applies to the type of activity you are performing and it is not an absolute maximum. Your heart can easily beat 300 times a minute if your brain tells it to do so, but you will hopefully never see this out on a run or bike session. When we talk about MHR, we always mean activity specific. You may find out your MHR for running is 190 bpm but on the bike it may be only be 175. The amount and type of muscle fibers recruited and the amount oxygen needed by the muscle groups contribute your brain’s decision making on how fast the heart needs to pump. While you may use leg muscles for both running and cycling, the bike supports most of your body weight and overall recruits less muscle activity than running, resulting in most people having a lower MHR for cycling than running.

their will be part two next month.
