Subject: Neck discomfort while in aero position
I have recently put aero bars on my bike and I think they are great. However, I do have a small amount of neck discomfort while in full aero position on my longer rides. I've had a bike fit with the new bars on... I have noticed that each time I ride I am able to stay in the aero position longer. Will I get used to the position and will this neck discomfort ease off as I ride more?? (I am sure I will get ued to it...I just don't want to do any damage to my neck!) Is there anything special ie. stretches that may help me, or do I just suck it up and ride?

You'll get used to it.  Keep riding.

the muscles in your neck and upper back have to get used to the weight of your head and helmet hanging in mid-air. As they strengthen, you'll have fewer problems.

Ditto - you'll get used to it.  I takes a bit of time, but your body will adapt.

Sounds like a good excuse to go get a massage. But seriously, the massages really helped loosen things up for me. It gets pretty tight in the neck and upper back area.

Thanks everyone...good advice! I will get a massage and keep riding. Like I say it has been easier the longer I ride...I just wanted to be sure I wasn't doing any damage!

I've had a the same issues the last three weeks since I got my new tri bike with aerobars. (I trained on a mountain bike before.) Good to hear that it just takes some getting used to. Since I had the bike fitted by a pro and it's comfy all around otherwise I wondered why my neck hurt so much. I found it helps if I get out of the aero position every 5 minutes or so for just a short while, on some straight stretches where I don't have to shift or anything. After the ride there's no lingering pain that way. Good luck with your neck! Astrid

I found one of these to really handy. Just kidding. Look down at the cassette on your rear wheel or if you feel daring, the top of your rear wheel. This is a nice stretch that you will feel from between your shoulder blades all the way up to your neck. Just hold for a few seconds at most and be sure to scan the road ahead for any hazards before doing so.

Nice idea! Just one question...does it have to be a yellow post-it note? Thanks for the advice on the stretches. Nice set up on the bike by BTW.

Think a pink one might have more impact?
