Subject: Hello - Any type I Diabetics out there?
I've been training for my second sprint distance triathlon (6mile run, 12 mile bike, 7mile kayak). I'm always looking for training and nutrition tips, but I have a difficult time with my diet because I'm an insulin-dependant diabetic (for 36 years). I can't do high carb loading days before an event as it shoots my blood sugars sky high. The glycogen burn thing also confuses me, i.e., carbs, fats, proteins.....ahhh! If any other tri's are diabetic, I would appreciate tips on how you maintain your blood glucose levels during this rigorous training. Duriing my last tri, I had to stop and check my blood sugar three times, and eat or drink at every transition. That's fine, but it added time. Has anyone had experience with the insulin pump? I hear its hard to calculate, but may work for this. Thanks for listening

hi Janice,

I just want to say welcome, it's nice to have you here. While I'm not a diabetic, my husband is a T1, but he's of the couch potato breed so I can't help you with any specific training questions. Do you work closely with a diabetes educator or nutritionalist? If you don't, maybe you could find one. That could be a start. If you do work with one, maybe they could help you or send you to someone who is more in tune with athletes to help you control your situation. I have heard of other T1s doing triathlons so I know it can be done successfully. I just don't know of any to direct you to.

My husband is going for pump training on 2/11. Last May his A1C was 10.8 and he was usingh a long acting insulin. I had him change to fast-acting humalog and Lantus so he gets to shoot anywhere from 4-6 times a day. It made the pump seem attractive. Anyhow, his last A1C was 6.2 so we're pretty pleased with that.

Do you read any diabetes newsgroups? Not chatrooms or message boards such as this, but a newsgroup on Usenet. If you go to Google, click on groups, then type in alt.support.diabetes, you'll find a virtual treasure chest there. It is a huge group of people dealing with diabetes. There is one man in particular who is a retired engineer who taught me how to figure out carb to insullin ratios and suggested that DH switch his insulin regime. I would print out his posts and take them to our doctor who was always blown away by the amount of GOOD information he was passing on.

There is a better way to read the newsgroup than thru Google, so if you are interested, shoot me an email and I'll help you set up a newsreader.
