Don't worry; you're not too heavy for any of the standard, entry-level road bikes.   There's just the matter of fitting a good frame to your frame and finding an end-o-season deal.  Look at Wheelworks Too in Belmont for some excellent deals on barely used bikes; New bikes abound at any local bike store.

Happy shopping, -Sunny

in a spirit tri you need a bike. Does not matter what it is. If your doing a half ironman or longer I would get atleast a roadbike.

I'm 6/4 & weigh 260...if you're like most I think you'll enjoy triathlon & cycling inparticular. At least that's what happened w/ me. I've always been a "runner" but I've always been a bigger person. Cycling is much easier on the body. You may find you like it quite a bit so I'd consider looking for a good stock road bike (Felt, Giant, Trek all make good entry level bikes) at both local bike shops as mentioned before (end of season close outs) but also check out some used bikes. Try to find a tri club or a local riding club. There may very well be someone selling a 1-2 yr old bike for 1/2 of what you would pay at a local bike shop. Don't forget you have to buy all the "stuff" that goes w/ it. You don't need the fancy pedals & shoes yet but you'll probably have at least $100 dollars (helmet, shorts, jersey, spare tubes, stand pump for home use, hand pump or CO2 shot in case of a flat on the road, tire levers, & seat bag for ID/cell phone -- I think this stuff is minimal for your safety) of stuff to buy just to get out the door for the first ride.

Good luck.

You could find a used hybrid for 100-300 just depending on craigslist or anywhere else you can find used bikes.

I have a Giant hybrid and while it is not fast like a road or tri bike, it definately works fine. Also, if for some reason you don't keep up with the biking, you can still use the hybrid just for ride around the neighborhood.
