Happy Thanksgiving week everyone!  It's almost impossible to believe that it's already here.

The weather has been very unseasonal in NE, yesterday was sunny and in the 60's, which makes it even harder to believe that it is almost Thanksgiving.

Have a great week everyone!

Awesome job, Terri !!!

Keep it up, I know this week we all have to stay on our best behavior.  My theory is enjoy a little of what you really like (which collectively ends up being a lot) and don't overeat!!!

Good Luck Everyone!

Thanks girls!

Melissa (BunnyB) is driving down on Wednesday and we're run/walking the Oceanside 5K Thursday morning. This will be my first race ever! I've planned a simple menu, and with the two of us being WWs and DH training for his first HIM (he's also running the 5K) I know the 3 of us will keep each other pretty close to clean.

Everything I'm cooking will be as FF and SF as I can get it. This is a first for me. Being from the south, we're big on casseroles for holiday cooking. Instead of Sweet Potatoe casserole, I'm baking yams to mash. I'm also just making a turkey breast, and while I am making stuffing and dressing, I've cut the portions down to just about 1 serving each so we won't be tempted by the leftovers (which is the worst part for me). The only casserole I'm making is the infamous for broccoli/cheese/rice one and I'm using 99% FF soup and light cheese. I hope it's all edible! I'm even making a pumpkin pie from the recipe sent out by HungryGirl.com this past week.

My fingers are crossed for us all

Never been much of a sweet potatoe fan (does that mean I was adopted, I really am from the south)... but I've had several people lately tell me I need to try yams instead of white potatoes..

Let me know how the potato mash comes out!!!

Morning! I was up again at WI..grrr! I did get my RMR and MAP testing done this weekend. Decided to suck it up and see what it would say. The short story...I'm in really good shape and have a pretty high AT (192). But my RMR was below average for my height/weight (1465 calories). And when we compared that to what I've been eating, even with APs, I'm usually way below what I need to eat on a daily basis. Sooo I've been told that I have to have food - exercise = 1700 calories a day, every day. I'm doing core, so that's helpful in working with the calories. We'll see what a few weeks of doing this does. I also have some HR training workouts to do to based on my zones.

And in other exciting news, for the first time, I comfortably swam 25 yards 4 times with 30 seconds rest between. I'm excited!

Mornin' All... WI this morning... 162 (can you log that for me Jana, Tx)... total 2.4 for this month.  THis week is going to be hard... I still need to lose 2.6 for the December challenge... Guess I really need to focus on workouts and healthy meals for the rest of the month (as I enjoy my morning white café mocha).

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend

I really think you'd like the mashed yams. They're very moist, and they're very good for you.

Congrats on the swim accomplishment!

Now, can you explain what you said above? As a relative newbie, I have a hard time understanding the testing and terminology. Thanks!

Quick Physio Terminology Break -

RMR - Resting Metabolic Rate - How much energy your body expends at rest.  Calculated by either indirect or direct spirometry.

MAP - Mean Arterial Pressure - Amount of blood being pumped by each stroke.

AT - Anaerobic Threshold (aka Lactate Threshold) - Point at which the body converts from aerobic metabolism to anaerobic.  This measure combined with results of VO2 max will help determine succes in endurance events.

It's been years since I've conducted any of these kinds of test, had to use my old texts for refreshers.  Looking for my measurement tables on this stuff, but I think that book is at home.

Hope this makes some sense for you.

Heather - thank you for the definitions!  (I still am having a hard time putting it all together though), also congrats on your loss!

Kimmi - congrats on the swim accomplishment

I hope everyone is having a good week!

Any special recipies that anyone is using for thanksgiving?

I'm having dinner at my house - there will be about 11 of us.  Actually Thanksgiving is not all that tough for me from a choice standpoint as I'm not a fan of dressing, sweet potatoes, or pie

portions on the other hand!

the only one that's different is that by MAP, I meant Metabolic Assessment Profile, which is the exercise test that is used to get VO2 values. But other than that, right on.

I really wanted to get the testing done because I've been on a plateau for a REALLY long time. Actually two plateaus. One started in 2006 and lasted til I hurt my knee in Feb of this year and was out of commission with exercise for 3 months. The second is happening now. I love WW, but I was getting so frustrated with the fact that nothing I seemed to do was making a difference and I'd just cycle around a certain weight. So I figured by getting the RMR, I'd at least have some sound numbers to work with, instead of keeping up the guess work and staying frustrated. The MAP testing was to help get on track w/ HR training and hopefully help my endurance. Also, what I learned from the nutritionist is that by working out in the zone between the HR when you are at max fat burn (for me, 145) and your AT (for me, 192), you can work to improve the fat burn you have at ranges closer to your AT...meaning that instead of burning all carbs at AT (which I do) I'll burn a mix of fat and carbs. That will help for endurance and for overall weight loss.

heather, have you ever tried sweet potatoes prepared like white potatoes? i personally don't like them that way, but my friend swears by this. she has them with a pinch of salt and sour cream. i like mine with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little butter.

Yeah on the swim breakthrough! I didn't know how to swim when I decided to do my first race, so I took lessons...it took me 2 sessions before I could even put my face in the water. It took me a year before I could swim 2 laps--but now I can swim a mile pretty comfortably (3+ years). Keep up the good work--my hardest hurdle to overcome was continuing to go to the pool and convince myself that I deserved the space in the lane every bit as much as the more established swimmers.

You rock! Keep up the good work!

WI this am had me down 2.8. Not bad for the first week. See what following the plan (Core for me this week) and drinking my water can do.

I had a good swim yesterday (my weakest sport) I agree with you on feeling like I "deserve" a lane. I see all these great swimmers and think "what must they think of me?"

DS is home sick today but hope to sneak off to the gym to lift...

Kimmi - Thanks for the suggestion on the sweet potatoes... One of the trainers here at work was suggesting mixing it with tuna, hmm?  I myself must agree I think the brown sugar might be the most enjoyable (though not healthiest).

On the MAP, funny how technology evolves... 10 yrs ago in grad school we used VO2max testing (ie treadmill with all the spirometry tubes), and a MET cart (to measure RMR) to do the calculations and figure out target training zones for the different metabolic processes.  We used to test the "patients" on day one, then send them home and do calculations for hours to come up with all sorts of numbers that we would basically explain to them for thirty minutes the nest day and summarize with one statement... "You need to do this and this to obtain your goals."

Good job on the testing!! It really helps to have other goals and be able to understand how to get there rather than just staring at the scale week in and week out.  To me, the weight loss (though much wanted) is simply a side effect to training and acheiving other goals.

Heather - It's not much different. I was on a treadmill with a mask on for the VO2. For RMR, I sat in a chair and breathed into an mask. I guess the difference is that now, the computers do the calculations so you can find out your results immediately. I am really excited to have something solid to work with. I'm following all his rules explicitly, so hopefully I will reap some rewards

And it doesn't take a lot of brown sugar as long as you use the other spices. I use maybe one tablespoon for a large sweet potato. I've never thought about mixing it with tuna, but I have had a baked sweet potato (with only a little brummel and brown) with baked chicken and that was pretty good. Probably pretty similar.

  • OMG I'm dealing with this attitude right now! I have 2 more sessions with a coach and then I'm on my own. I know I'm not as fast, nor can I go as far, as established swimmers and I'm worried that they'll get irritated with me for even being there.

Thanks It's encouraging that there are others on here that are just learning to swim before their first race. Glad I'm not the only adult who flunked out of swim class as a kid, lol.

You're probably faster than you think... And besides those other "established" swimmers didn't always know how to swim, at SOME point they were just learning, too.  Though I can relate to the feeling, I STILL haven't gotten in the pool yet (next week hopefully).  Maybe try to find times that work for you when the pool isn't so busy.

GOOD LUCK! You guys are turning into fish

We just joine a fitness center and haven't been to the pool yet. There are only 4 lanes though and that has me nervous. I guess I'll find out this weekend how busy they are.

If we go to the military training tank, I usually share a lane with DH.
