I am brand new to training for a Sprint Triathlon (I'm shooting for Fall 2004, if that tells you anything.) I'm doing well with swimming and biking, but the running has me scared. I'm starting out with a walk/run program, but always have pain in ankles and shins. Any suggestions?

what has your recent walk/runs intervals looked like? (minutes)

could be your shoes.  might have to go to a good running store and get properly fitted for a shoe or see a podiatrist...that's what i had to do for my achilles tendonitis...it is surprising what can happen with an improperly fitted pair of shoes.

shin splints r usually caused by a sudden increase in tranining... http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/shin_splints.htm. r u staying conservative enough?  i remember that u mentioned that u had weight to lose...it just may take more patience.

What a memory, Ron! I do have a lot of weight to lose, so I am starting pretty slowly. Actually had not run at all and was walking about 30 minutes at a time. Last night I started walking and felt great, so I decided to run for 2 minutes. Didn't actually feel to bad, until I started walking again, then -- OUCH! I did manage to do a 45 minute walk, though. I just bought a new pair of shoes and will give them a try for a while, I guess. Funny thing was, I didn't notice any pain during that tiny bit of running.

Many times when you are increasing your walking speed you will tend to flex you toes upward more than usual and this can cause some muscle tightness in the shins that can be very painful. Running may not experience this pain because the upward toe flex may not be as great. I am not a doctor, and don't play one on t.v.-- I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

If don't work through it in the next week, I would follow Ron's advice, because it very well could cause you other problems.

doesn't mean the shoe "works"

For the past couple of months I was experiencing pain after running. It wasn't too bad but it annoyed me. My shoes felt good on my feet and I thought they were fine. I recently went to a store that caters to runners to get new shoes. They had me walk around barefoot while they studied my feet and their position They made some recommendations based on my walking style and brought out several pairs and had me test them out (running). I walked out with a new pair of shoes and haven't had any pain since. The decision to go to a running specific store was the best decision I made!
