Why isn't my fancy column graph 3-D looking anymore? That was the light of my life!

I know - I liked it too.  But apparantly it had a perspective problem in that people couldn't readily identify the volume levels by just glancing.  It wasn't a big deal to me, but apparantly to others, so they changed it.

Now, though, the graduated shading gives one the illusion that the columns aren't all parallel to each other.  Kind of weird.

Oh well, they still shoot up out of the floor, which makes look like I'm really training.

And Mitch - I'm in.  Would be nice to get a couple fresh folks in though, as we didn't get involvement from everyone who initially signed up.

I don't think my new group is posted yet, but would love to have you in it.  You were like a co-leader at times and I appreciated it.  Agree with the fresh folks comments.  Our group of 8 or so was more like a group of 4 or 5.  We'll see!

Mitch - I'm in also.

Also...HALP!  I'm in the middle of HM training and my shins are sore. Is this normal? I think I trained too fast on my long runs (and maybe all of my runs since I live in a treacherously hilly area).  They feel a bit better 4 days after the long run (5) and I did a short slow run yesterday, which was mainly painful until the end and then there was throbbing after...Anyway, I swam today.  What should I do tomorrrow?  I have a 4-miler planned for Fri. and a 6 for Sunday with a brick of bike/swim on Saturday.  Should I attempt this or do something else?  Thank God for mentor groups. I'm really conflicted.

Grace - refresh my memory for when your HM is.  I think my advice would be to try to find a High School track where maybe you could do the 4 miler on Friday.  It will likely be a cushioned track and flat.  youa re right in that running a lot of hills to soon can play havoc with your legs.  I would also really try to run the Sunday run at an easy pace.  regarding the brick (bike/swim) I say go for it, cycle at an easy pace but not that low of rpms, let your legs spin to loosen them up, etc.

My new mentor thread is up, so feel free to go and sign up!

Ditto what Mitch said.  Hills can have a damaging effect on those of us ramping up our volumes.  I too live in a hilly area (only way out of our home is up one of the hills).

As an example - bad news today.  Visited the sports medicine doc.  Diagnose a medial gastroc tear (aka calf strain).  He was unequivocal in his treatment.

No running . . . . . .For 2-3 Months!!!

So my half-marathon is out, as well as my next tri.

Not a good day, and was surpised out how emotional such news could be.

To answer your question though - sounds like shin splints.  Lower the pace and the mileage.  If you feel pain during the run, stop.

Ice your shins after every run.  Possibly take some Ibuprofen or Aleve.  Exploit swimming and biking to replace some of the run volume.

Also, if it gets worse or doesn't go away, see a doctor - they suck but they help.

Hmmm, sounds familiar.

Good luck Grace -

Jeff,
So sorry about your news but 2-3 months will fly by.  Focus on what you CAN do and not on what you CAN'T.  Can you still swim, bike, use cardio machines or lift weights?

Mitch or anyone else in our group,

I am trying to get the bike out on the road and off the trainer more.  My easier gears are squeaking very loud.  Do I need to lubricate them with some kind of oil and what do you recommend?

Also, I want to continue our mentor group too!

Would love to have you in the new group!  Regarding the bike, is it a squeak or metal on metal sound?  I can't figure out why the gear would squeak in only certain gearing combinations?  It should be noted that I suck at bike mechanics...I try to make adjustments to my bike's but only succeed about 50% of the time.
