lforce - 2009-02-03 6:57 PM just filled out the race report, splits were finally posted, would be cool if people with experience could take a look and any pointers would be appreciated...

Congrats on your first!  A few thoughts...  Had you done any OWS practice before the race?  It really makes a difference, although you had a pretty strong swim regardless.  Not much you can do about frozen feet, but I'm not sure that having the shoes on the pedals would have helped much.  IMO, more T1 practice would help the problem of not being able to clip in.  For me, it seems to be a nervous issue.  Aerobars might help, but more miles on the bike is key.  Aerobars help for longer distances, IMO.  Looks like you might have gone out too hard on the run.  Pace yourself.  Even though it's "only" a sprint, that first half mile on the run is tough.  Negative splits are the goal.  Start off the run a bit slow and then build.  Bonus is that you can catch people on the last mile that way.  Or at least that's what I think would happen.  I've never caught anyone on the run.  For me, the run is about damage control.  And watching all the people that I passed in the water and on the bike just cruise by me.  Anyway, congrats again on your race.  Just know that those of us in the frozen north are jealous that you're racing already.

What a glorious day in NJ!!! Some solid hill running, then cycling today. Apparently my MaxHR in cycling is higher than I previously thought. I knocked off two of the tougher climbs that are a good barometer of my fitness level. Usually don't do that until about May/June.

As for the "addiction" quality of Tri's... I always found if I have a good race, I'm stoked to do another. If I have a bad race, I'm desperate to make up for it with another.

Just so you know, if you leave NJ in the morning and it is 56 degrees doesn't mean you can go running without a jacket when you get to Maine as the sun is setting...   Don't ask how I know...   :-)

Sad day today. One of my triathlete friends passed away in his sleep yesterday. Unexpected. He was planning on doing Ironman Lake Placid - we had talked about getting in some training together.

Just kinda makes you think and appreciate the good things.

Sorry to hear about your friend.  Agree about appreciating what's good, but sad that it takes these types of events for us to focus on what's really important.  Will give that some thought tonight.

Ok, it's gotten pretty quiet on our forum.  I had a good week.  Met my 400 minute goal and stuck to my running plan for the half mary...long run tomorrow.  Have been doing these with a small group and a trip to the diner post run. Helps with the motivation. The feet are doing ok, although it's still early in the training and mileage is low.  Also managed 3 good swims and a few minutes on the bike.

How's everybody doing?

I spent most of the week battleing a head cold.  Nothing major, just a head cold.  Still a bit of a cough, but otherwise I'll be fine.  That really cut into my training though.  It's almost time to start training for real and that will be a good thing.  I get really slack in the winter when it's cold out and races are still months away.

Work is kicking my azz still.  I'm swamped with papers to grade, lessons to plan and all the rest.  Our district is going through major budget cuts and I'm just praying I survive that.  I've only been here for 3 years and they go strictly on seniority.  So, I could end up on the street while my co-worker who is a rotten teacher will be fine.  It's so unfair.

I think I also have another round of horse drama starting.  One of my horses is showing signs of a metabolic syndrome.  Long story short, it needs a blood test to diagnose, but I have a gut feeling that's what we're dealing with.  He had the test about 4 years ago and it was inconclusive.  Since then, more symptoms.  This will require daily meds and dietary management.  Just one of those things that has to be done.  Anyway, riding him will help it.  I really have neglected riding them since we moved out here 3 years ago.  Now it has to be done.  Yesterday I took him out for just 15 min. of walking in the yard.  He was a little goofy, but not too bad.  Funny thing is that he seemed so happy after that.  I think he misses human interaction.  This is the horse in my avatar.  I used to ride 5 or 6 days a week and travel to shows 2-3 weekends a month in the summer.

Guess that's all that's new out on the farm in MN.  Hanging out waiting for spring!

Head colds are really rotten and they totally mess up working out.  Sounds like you are on the mend.  As for work, basing retention on seniority is a cop out by school administration.  Good luck and hope it turns out well.

I also had a vet drama a few weeks ago.  My old cat was acting weird, er weirder than usual.  Long story...major thyroid storm.  Systolic pressure thru the roof and both retinas detached leaving him blind.  Got him on meds and amazingly he has regained a good bit of his sight.  A few blind spots here and there, but quality of life seems really good.  Hope things work out for your horse.  Riding is good for the mind and soul.

Got my long run in this morning and totally pigged out on eggs and hash browns afterwards.

Just got back from my long run - 14 miles in about 2:09:xx.  Just a touch over 9:00/mile.  This is the longest that I have run since the last marathon I did (1997!).  I'm a little sore but much less than I thought I would be.  I think my first 20 miler is scheduled for 3 weeks from now.

thought you'd all like to see my pilates injury, yep that's right pilates, which we all thought was such a wooly 'sport', but nope, if you are enough of an unco-ordinated duffer, you can end up with a nice scrape on your shin.  It's about 7 inches from top to bottom bruises

Hey Guys! I have kind of been missing in action. If you recall, I had knee surgery in November and have had a difficult time getting back with the plan . . . all my workouts were SO boring. ANYWAY, so I should be able to begin running (slowly) here in a week and a half. Just went to the dr.

Oh, man, my triathlon is supposed to be in April. I don't know if I'll be able to do it . . . but we'll see. Hmmmm . . .

. . . an injury in pilates? Doesn't sound good.

Was really sore this week, so had a deep tissue massage yesterday.  It was pretty uncomfortable in the moment, but feel great today.

Did you know that "massage" is on the sports drop down bar?  Couldn't bring myself to add it to this weeks activity minutes even though I'm falling short of the 400 goal, but thought it was funny to call it a "sport."

Ok...you just went from housework to pole dancing in one breath... Nice!

My body is just beat up - not from training but moving boxes and furniture. Ughhhh! Might take today off. Woke up planning to do a short brick, but even that feels like torture. Maybe I'll feel better in the afternoon. Not going to worry about it.
