So, if you climbed up on the ledge, climb down. Greetings from the ledge! Seriously, if I don't complicate this and blow it WAY out of proportion, I'm going to need a whole new personality. Fear is motivation LOL. Had a solid ride in the beautiful weather earlier this evening. A little slow, but 2200 ft. of elevation gain over 22 miles, so it wasn't a cakewalk. I know I'll be ready, but I'm just going to worry until my toes hit the sand at the swim start--that's just part of my charm. Thanks for the encouragement. Jackie Its really just two big climbs that stick out in terms of grand elevation. Any chance you get up there to preview the course? That will settle all of your fears knowing ahead of time what you are going up against. The first 10 miles out are hilly finishing with the steepest climb. The last 10 miles in are hilly starting with the longest climb. The middle miles are all gravy. |

Veteran 248 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread jtrezza - 2010-03-16 2:00 PM dsmallacomb - 2010-03-16 9:41 AM I'm a bit nervous about cut off times!! In reading the Timberman information it talks about a time from the start of the final wave. Can someone tell me about how many waves there are and how they are arranged. I am in the Female 43 age group. This is my first HIM and I just want to make sure I am not pulled off the course for not making the cut-off times. I swear this is keeping me up at night already! This will also be my first HIM, and I'm worried about the cut-off times as well. I have registered for early season stand-alone events (1.2 mi OWS, 2 half-marys, and hilly bike tours of 50+ miles) to verify I can complete the individual distances within the cut-off times. Once I know I can do that, I'll spend the rest of my training trying to put it all together. Do you have a similar strategy?
Good Luck, Jackie +1 on Sam's advice. Everyone chillax a bit. August is a LONG time away, really. I think if you try and get 3 or 4 rides of 2.5 - 3 hrs in you will be fine. Throw in some running for 30 - 60 min after to get used to running on tired legs. My strategy is going to be base building on bike and run. I'm following the BT Half plan and so far it's working. I'm in week 9 of 20 - I have a HIM June 4th. I got out on the bike yesterday for an hour in the Great Swamp - gorgeous but lots of debris on the road from the flooding rain. Sam - I had two six or seven minute stretches where I was >20 MPH, hitting and holding briefly 23 mph. Had a nice 30 min run later in the eve to stretch things out. |

Regular 91 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I'm excited for Saturday. I am going to take my bike off the trainer and get outside. I need to get to High Gear for a new tire. I think my back tire is ruined from being on the trainer, but I think High Gear is closed due to flooding. I have lots of nice areas to ride around town-Basking Ridge NJ. I think I will do the Doc-n-Soc 10 mile loop since it is sooo close and has some nice hills. Enjoy the nice weather!! I did a trainer ride this morning so I can get in a run after work today. Thanks for the encouragement about the cut-off times. I have plenty of races set to help build up the confidence. My next events are the Mt. Penn Mudfest, the Rutgers Half Mary, High Rock Challenge and the tough mudder!! I am looking forward to April. |

My first time with both outside (off the trainer) got both in Dec. Love them both, although I know I need some time to get used to them. The aerobars definitely let you know how quiet your upper body is, and I am waiting for the time I forget to unclip at a stop sign. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread It's just WAY too early to be worried about the course. I had a friend who did T-man last year and had the same fears of not making the cutoffs (with good reason I might add), but on race day, she was fine. And you all will be fine too. Just ride your normal rides and don't shy away from the hills. |

(Actually, it's still pre-training plan for me as I haven't even started "officially" training yet) If any of you Swamp-riders are up for Saturday morning ride, I was planning on running then following up with a ride - out of Loantaka Park. Have a great day, Jackie Hi, Yes, I do master swim on Tues. and Thurs morning at the Somerset Hills YMCA. There are a bunch of women who are training for all distances. I am in if anyone wants to go to Stirling Hotel. I'm not a fast runner, biker or swimmer to keep up with anyone. As a matter of fact, I might have to bag the Rutger's Half due to a nagging foot/leg injury. I am definitely going for a bike ride on Sat!!! |

I am definitely going for a bike ride on Sat!!! Sounds like me exactly!!! Luckily I signed up in the first few minutes so it only cost $17.66. But I'd rather bag out of $17 than have to waste the $275 (or whatever it is) for T-Man. And $160 for NYC Marathon. These races are getting ridiculous. Race Fees vs. Kids' College...tough call. Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread So...it's Friday...it's going to be 50-something. I'm taking a personal 1/2 day, so I'll be boarding my bike for a 56+ ride with my friend Ryan by 12:15. Excellent. I had to do it. The forecast calls for a mix of snow and rain for this weekend and I did NOT want another long ride on the trainer if I could help it. runnerx- Race fees are crazy expensive. When I first started in 1995 the average cost for a sprint or Olympic distance event was $35-$40 and a half-ironman event (and it was ok for anyone to use the term half-ironman then) averaged $80-$90. I'm sure inflation is a factor, but there are also those making a living from putting on the events. I have mixed feelings about it. I am glad people are willing to do a great deal of work to put on events and I'm glad they can do it full time. On ther other hand...whew...that's a lot of coin. |

Veteran 248 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I think the Stirling Hotel idea is great - what days look good? Maybe during the week around 6:30 or so .... thoughts welcomed. Sam your long ride sounds great! It's a great day for riding in NJ - we should hit 70 degrees and it's sunny. I rode yesterday in the swamp and the weather was similar to today - gorgeous. I rode a bit yesterday with someone I met while riding - he also assisted with a flat tire which was nice. I had patch kit, etc but no CO2. Duh. It was nice riding with another person - 95% of the time I ride alone. Walt I saw your post about Saturday -this week I have a field cleanup dat for little league so I cant do it. But we will have many more weekends. Where do you NJers do open water swim? I go to Stirling Lake - but have heard of another lake also in Morris County (further north) - I think it's Budd Lake or Sunrise Lake (?). |

Extreme Veteran 494 Morris County, NJ | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Excellent! That makes four of us. My husband laughs that I will invent any reason to go to the Stirling Hotel, I can't help it they have the best IPA specials and that veggie burger, yum. Wait till he hears I solicited three strangers from the internet to meet me there for a beer--I think there is an intervention in my future. MillMan221 - 2010-03-19 10:10 AM I think the Stirling Hotel idea is great - what days look good? Maybe during the week around 6:30 or so .... thoughts welcomed. Weeknights can work for me, and 6:30 sounds perfect. If it suits your schedules, maybe we can squeeze in a swamp ride around 5:30PM (dark at 7) and then head over for that beer. I'll be joining the High Gear B-paced ride on Tuesday at 5:30 (anyone welcome). I ride again on Thursdays, and I'm flexible on the weekends. Let me know what works for the rest of you. MillMan221 - 2010-03-19 10:10 AM Where do you NJers do open water swim? I sign up for every OWS clinic offered by anyone with a whistle and a clipboard. In early summer, I'll head down to Horseshoe Cove at Sandy Hook. It's cheap and easy. The kids crash on the sand with a picnic, and my husband and I alternate swimming. It works for us, but I would love to hear about other options |
