NH | Subject: RE: The Frozen (not so) North Mentor Group - CLOSED Lovey, good job figuring out a way to get on the treadmill. You'll knock off a pretty significant portion of the run tomorrow. Those are some serious long runs. I'm hoping to get a run in this afternoon after snow blowing the driveway. We got about 8 inches today, and it's beautiful right now. I've got to get back in training sync and I'm hoping now that work seems more stabilized I'll be able to get after it again. So far in the challenge: Swim: 0 yds, 4224 to go. Bike: 59.7, 52.3 to go Run: 9.4, 16.8 to go. I'm really going to make an effort to get back in the pool this week, just for you Scott! |

Veteran 727 Baltimore Area | Subject: RE: The Frozen (not so) North Mentor Group - CLOSED I was feeling good today. I had the morning off because it was a half day. So after I got the kids on the bus, I went to spin class and then the yoga for cyclists (flow yoga) right afterwards. Both were the same instructor. I usually don't like 1hr spin classes and opt for the 45 mins ones. this instructor was so good, the time passed so fast. After a long hot shower, i am taking it easy for the rest of the day. Work has jumped to 12-15hr days and training will be a task to get in. I did make it to the gym this evening...just did the eliptical for 25min and I did count the 1.5mi towards my run. Warren...I hope to hit the pool and a bike tomorrow as long as the phone doesn't ring at 0300hr...haha. Work has picked up and my hours training may slip. So when are you getting in the pool? If I do make it I should finish the swim, now just have to get in my mileage for running and bike. How is the rest of the groups totals for the IM?? |

My 12 mile run turned into a 11 mile run. the weather was 16 degrees, 6 with wind chill factor. My legs didn't feel cold because they were frozen like an ice pop. New user 10 | Subject: RE: The Frozen (not so) North Mentor Group - CLOSED Happy Weekend to everyone! Thanks for the "inspire" tutorial. I think I had the replies all wrong- a *huge* thanks for the encouragement this week! It means a ton- now I just need to relay the thanks/encouragement in the right spots. Sorry about that.. Another C25K week down, week 6 coming up, which is going to be tricky. I'll have to time the run/walk with care so I don't completely fall apart. No swimming this week. I'm a pansy driving in a bunch of snow to get to the pool. As for the "not looking at the scale this week" challenge- dropped a half a pound, definitely gained some muscle, and my stamina was surprisingly off the charts. Feeling GREAT. Ironman stats: Swim 0, Bike 0, Run 6.75 |

Perhaps just need to slowly build up muscle strength around it? Kim Great job signing up - getting to the starting line healthy is half the battle. For pain outside the knee joint, there's a lot of possibilities. Building up slowly is always a good plan, and don't up distance and intensity at the same time, do one or the other. Often pain on the outside of the knee id IT band related. When I first started running I really thought I would have to drop training due to the pain on the outside of my knee joint. A few trips to an ART guy and some rolling (which I still do fairly regularly) and I've been pain free for a year. Here's my link again for self diagnosing lots of problems. But if it really gets bad, I'd suggest going to see someone who practices ART first, then go from there. |

I went back in and even erased my email address from the settings but I cannot seem to stop them...any ideas? That's some COLD running! To stop the e-mail notification - go to the settings page (at the top of the page - with the wrench icon), choose the Forum settings tab...there is a drop down menu option of "Receive e-mail notifications by default"...try changing that one. If that doesn't work - I would post something in the Training Log and Site Support Forum. Fantastic job on Mike completing the IM challenge in the first week! Who's going to be next? My numbers for the first week: Swim: 1500/4225 yards Bike: 65.82/112 miles Run: 20.14/26.2 miles Hope you all are doing well! We're seeing some great consistency going - way to keep going. Did anyone see the article about CrossFit in last month's Triathlete magazine? It talked about approaching endurance training from a Crossfit perspective. I don't know what to think...but I do think it is always interesting to see other thoughts about training. There is a thread in the TT forum discussing this that is interesting if you have some time to kill here. |

Member 34 Burlington | Subject: RE: The Frozen (not so) North Mentor Group - CLOSED Mike -- WOW. Congratulations! And congratulations to everyone participating for their progress in the challenge. I am impressed with all of us! Do we keep going to see who finishes second and third? I see a couple of contenders.... Kelly Sue - good luck with the race today! Warren - thanks for the link again; I must have missed it in earlier posts. I think it is the *intensity* increase that is causing the pain, as it is when I increase resistance on the bike and increase the incline on the treadmill that I am feeling it. I'll dial it down a bit for a week or so and do some research on active release folks in the area. And I'll get myself a roller. I am heading down to the basement shortly to spin to episode 8 of 24, Season 8 (where are the nuclear rods that could put the world at risk?!?) and am so happy to not have to go outside.... We're supposed to see wind chills down to -30 tonight (a high of 1 today). I don't look forward to having to walk across campus for meetings tomorrow in the same weather.... Stay warm, everyone. There is a thread in the TT forum discussing this that is interesting if you have some time to kill here. Just had a chance to peruse this...on second thought, I wouldn't take the time to read it all...the primary discussion is intensity vs. time/distance. Then the discussion devolves into name calling. Sorry about that. I do think it is interesting to talk about whether or not strength training/intervals, etc have a place in triathlon training... |

Anyone else use something different? I had a kitchen trash bag then a towel on top. I spread it out, then put my stuff on one end, then folded the towel and trash bag over it to keep it dry in case it rained, it did. A backpack is convenient but not necessarily big enough depending on the size. I used my gym bag because it fit everything including my bike helmet. I carried it like a backpack using the short handles. My backpacks were too small and I couldn't justify spending $65 or more for a transition bag even though they are nice. |

Any thoughts from those of you that own one? Wendy I use an old hockey equipment bag. It's way too big and I bring way too much stuff. It helps my nerves to know I'm ready if it rains, snows, hails, the event gets moved to Europe, etc. Most of it stays in the bag and never sees the light of day. In general Jennifer is right on the money with keep it simple. And one most important point - practice your transitions so you get straight what you really need and what is not required, and you nail down the order to do things. Keep your transition mat simple and efficient. You don't need a ton of practice, but a few weeks before lay it out and do a few T1s and T2s. |

(5yrs ago it took me 44:02) I never stopped and even passed people going up hill. It really felt great at 7* to be moving. It really wasn't that bad temp wise minus a few of the bends being crisper than others. All the gear tips helped and I was comfortable. Still trying to wrap my brain around doing that after a swim and a bike in the heat, but that is why there is training. |
