Master 2484 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training sspicer - 2013-03-17 5:43 PM Did an OWS on Saturday. Water temp was 63 degrees. BRRR. Didn't time myself, just wanted to get the experience. A little shocky when I first entered the water but once I got started, I had a pretty good rhythmn. Sighting is definitely going to require some practice. Suggestions? I've checked the water temps where I'll be doing my first tri and that time of the year, it will probably be close to 80 degrees or better so I'm going to continue the OWS practice without a wetsuit. 63? Brrrr! I would wear a wetsuit until the water warms up. |

I know its been awhile, but wanted to stop back in to give you all an update on what I've been working on. With the weather being lousy, most of my time has been spent on the bike trainer. I logged nearly 500 miles in 7 weeks, while mixing in some running on the treadmill and weight training. In addition, I now do 30 minutes of yoga each morning and it has helped dramatically with loosening up. The knee is much improved, so much so that I completed the Caesar Rodney 5k yesterday in 30 degree temps in 28:25. I couldn't have been happier, since I ran my race and the though of walking didn't even enter my mind (which is a MAJOR accokplishment). What made it better was my 70 year old father ran it with me and finished in 31:40, winning his age group. Afterwards, he and I both agreed we are ready to get serious training for the Escape From Fort Delaware Sprint Tri in May. At any rate, thats where things stand right now, hope all is well!
Pat Congrats on the race! Very cool your father won his age group and is still fast at 70. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Pat, Wow, at 62 I am in wetsuit. Congrats to your Dad! As for me, had my first swim post swim video analysis and found it helped. While its an N of 1 I knocked off about 7 seconds/100m on my warm-up swim and a couple of seconds on my pull/paddles workout. More to come. |

Don't own one and the locals had theirs all rented out. I am only going to do 3 or 4 more prior to the race and the water temp should be up each time as I progress. Ya gotta remember, swimming is my strength. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training WIsh I could say swimming was my thing! I actually do enjoy swimming now and just wish I had more time to do it. Couple of weeks from my first tri and training is doing okay. Hoping for a nice quiet week next week!

Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Ran with my 13-y-o son this evening. He laughed at my stretching, my running form and my sweating (he barely broke a sweat). We ran intervals: 3m at "Zone 2", 1m at "Zone 1" and did that 5 times. 2.48m in 28 total minutes (including warm up and cool down). I'm pleased. Changing up my running training to base it on Friel's book, "Your First Triathlon". Gives me a little variety and I like it better than running a certain distance in a certain time as the BT training program is set up that way. |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training 2 weeks to go to South Beach classic distance tri. Did a brick today and felt good: 16.2 mile on trainer 1 minute transition and 3.2 miles on treadmill. Still too cold to get outside, 34 degrees today with a cold wind. |

Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training AND GO! I have the last 6 weeks of my training schedule "inked" into my calendar. May 4 is the "big" race day for me and I'm so excited. I am going to do one OWS this weekend and one at the actual race site the week before. Otherwise it's business as usual with biking, running and swimming. Actually, I'm changing up my swimming training to do more intervals for better speed/time (I know I can finish the swim, it's just a matter of now getting faster). Need to purchase a tri suit. Online suggestions, anyone? Single? Two-piece? |

I tried a gray one piece once. After one ride sold it. Just not for me. I prefer a two piece as I wear my tri groups top and my favorite Orca tri shorts. |

I have a TYR one piece with the half zipper in the front. It works great for me but I have never tried a 2 piece on. Take a look on ebay and see what they have. I got mine for $38.00 brand new after shipping. There are some great deals to be had out there. |

Just picked up Pearl Izumu (spelling) top and shorts on Amazon for 60% off. |

Never tried a one piece and probably won't unless I get rid of my belly. Two piece is also easier to hit the porta potty in and you can race in the bike shorts you wear in training. I think most people with nor pieces only race in them. |

Regular 110 Southern Ontario | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Hey guys, As some of you here are aware, I struggle deeply with motivation. I think it's mainly because I am alone. I have absolutely zero R/L support and I live in the country, so hooking up with a training partner at a gym is not happening as the nearest gym is too far away. Anyone else here going it alone? Any tips on getting/staying motivated while doing this solo? |

Any tips on getting/staying motivated while doing this solo? I train 99+ percent alone. The trick for me is to set a goal then know that if I don't get out there, I have no chance of success. That's not to say that I don't struggle with motivation. I've had plenty of runs that I procrastinated almost an hour trying to decide nap or run. But once I go, I'm always glad I did. I like to run single track trails by myself with no tunes and just relax and unwind. If you can find some relaxation or sense of accomplishment in exercising, it will become easier. You just need to find what works for you. Keep at it! |

Any tips on getting/staying motivated while doing this solo? I have the same issue. I train 99% of the time by myself as my schedule rarely allows me to meet up with others. This last weekend I rode with another BTer which is the first time I have rode with another person in over a year (short of races). As for motivation, I have to sign up for races and pay my money. I hate wasting money and once I pay for a race I tend to train. Also, this group does help keep me on the honest side of training. |

Any tips on getting/staying motivated while doing this solo? I too struggle with motivation. I have a couple of friends that ride and my parents run. But no one does triathlons. My schedule with work, kids and everyday life rarely lets meet up with them to train. I find myself slowing down and making excuses not to go workout. I have found that if I just go ahead and get ready even if I sit back down I end up going. I have found a coupe of videos on you tube that help me get going also. But I feel your pain in the motivation dept. You guys help me stay focused and keep my eyes on the reward in the end. I am doing this just to push myself and to prove that if you put your mind to something and work hard you can accomplish anything. When I started running in September I barely ran a mile and thought I was going to pass out, and now I have run a half marathon and am going to do 4 10k's over the next few months leading up to my first triathlon in August. Thanks to all of you for the support and advice. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Hey all! For the newer folks my race wheels are actually the same basic model as my regular wheels but I put have latex tubes, a couple of LRR tires, and a Wheelbuilder wheel cover for the rear. I love racing on the latex tubes but the rear tube was a couple of years old and I was pushing my luck. Glad it blew on the stand and not at the race. |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Just finished a nice 6 mile run tonight. It felt good to be out on the road again. I didn't run all last week. I hope to get back on track this week and possibly get a swim and a ride in this weekend. I will have to see if I can get a babysitter. It will be my first swim for training and I am ready to see how it goes. Gary if I don't get a chance to get back this week good luck with Oxbow! Hope it all goes well. To everyone else hope everyone is healthy and training hard. |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Feeling a little stress with race coming Sunday and I haven't managed a workout since last Tuesday, a little too much taper, but things just got way to busy. Planning on a trainer ride tonight, swim tomorrow, and run on wednesday, and travel day on Thursday. Still in the 20's and 30's here so still haven't ridden outside since October. Planning a ride on Key Biscayne when I pick up the rental bike on Friday and a swim both Friday and Saturday to get a feel for the ocean, no chance for open water practice since last August. Since this is my 3rd tri, I have set goals. Knock it out of the park 2:20:00; Average 2:25:00 to 2:30:00; Almost disappointed = just finish. Best guess is Swim 18 min; Bike 1:20; Run 45; and transitions 0:2:30 total for both = 2:25:30. Smim is 880 yds, Bike is 19 miles, and run is 4 miles, they call it a classic distance. |

Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Picked up my mountain bike from the shop today. I paid $200+ to have it cleaned up/fixed up for my race. Wow what a difference! I rode today, however, and was disappointed in my time. My last several rides have been slower and the only thing I can chalk it up to is inconsistent rides since before spring break. I am 4 weeks away from my first tri and I'm pretty sure I can get my pace/speed up. I will NOT miss rides anymore. Just a little bit of time off can mess you up. |
