While I guess you could try to make them work they are not interchangeable. My first bike had 650's and while selection for tires/tubes was a bit limited it was pretty easy to find deals on wheels. That answers my question perfectly. I am still trying to understand the tech part of it and I thought you could interchange. |

On my first bike I got a used frame that luckily came with wheels and a few other parts. Didn't realize that there was a difference and would have bought the wrong size wheels. |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Got 3 miles in during lunch today. Not really pushing it as I did not get much sleep last night so I wasn't feeling the greatest. But still felt good about getting out there. I am going to try to get a good ride in this weekend though. Hopefully about 30 miles or so. Still trying to figure out a good swim schedule. With 3 kids and a wife and a full time job it can be a little difficult. Lol |

I've been able to keep up with the run and swim but my time on the bike has suffered severely. And I'm a Realtor so my schedule is all over the place (was showing houses until 7:30 tonight). I'm just always glad to get the time I do when I can get out there. |

Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training It's official! Nine days to race day and my bib number is 205. According to the email last year's race day water temp was 84 so I'm glad that I'm not going with a wetsuit. I actually went out there yesterday and felt the water. It's tolerable for me. Today I biked 14 miles. Tomorrow (Friday) nothing; Saturday there is a clinic for 1st timers including an OWS and I'm registered. Saturday afternoon I do one more brick and then taper next week. Not even going to do my weights. |

That swim sounds scary. Definitely should feel a send of accomplishment making it through that. Racing in high temps is challenging too. Congrats! |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Been trying to get my workouts in and for the most part successful albeit a bit short on some. Had to have my son at church this morning at 7 and be at work at 8 so ride this morning. Hoping to ride this afternoon. Daughter is a track meet and did manage to see her throw a PR in the Shotput. Looks like she took either 3rd or 4th place, they go to 6th place on these. Nice day out, too bad I am at work. |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Slow day today....got a short run in tonight and actually wrote out my nutrition/diet plan for each day in the week. Hopefully it will help me stay fueled enough to train hard and still shed the last 10-15lbs I want to lose before I race again. |

Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Just finished my last brick before race day next Saturday. 50m bike ride (12.11 miles) and then a 20m run (1.91 miles). Transition from bike to run was easy with no strain on the legs (did it in under 2 minutes in my garage). I will run one more time this week, swim once and bike twice and then Saturday race day. |

Member 21 3rd House on the Left | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training OK, here is a question for everyone. I have clipless pedals on my bike. Should I go with my road bike shoes or invest in triathlon shoes? Then of course there is the whole practice getting on the bike with my shoes already clipped in. Suggestions? |

Should I go with my road bike shoes or invest in triathlon shoes? Then of course there is the whole practice getting on the bike with my shoes already clipped in. Suggestions? I started off with road shoes but was very happy when I replaced them with Tri shoes. Much easier to get on and off and really helped in transition. As for on/off the bike there is a video on BT that goes over the various options. I don't do the run and jump to get on. I step on the inside pedal, push off and bring my leg over. For getting off, I take my feet out of the shoes and on top o of the shoes. I put my weight on my left foot and bring the right foot over (leaving both hands on the brakes) and glide to a stop. I practice that every ride including training rides. |

I am looking at one this summer that starts at 6:PM. 4pm would be great for me as that is my everyday workout time. I would take it easy at lunch on the food(just a protein shake or the like) so your business is done before race time. Hydration will be improtant too as temps would be higher in the pm and may need more liquid during the race. I would keep my normal routine the night before and normal wake up time, grab a short nap at lunch if you think you need it. Good luck! |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Group question? Have been reading about heartrate training and researching heartrate monitors for wife and I and am overwhelmed by the volume of products, any recommendations/experiences to share? Also, should I get just a heart rate monitor with strap, or try to combine it with a GPS type device as well? Thanks. |

Probably not the best to answer but I did use the HR strap with my garmin's but have given up on it. The problem for me is that its a lagging indicator and things such as caffeine, sleep (or lack of), work stress played havoc with my numbers. That said there are others who have been quite successful with it. My only experience with them have been in combo with my garmin GPS and typically worked well. |

Along with what DW said I would do my best to stay off your feet. With morning races you typically spend 6-8 hours prior sleeping. Go lite on food, stay away from greasy, fried food, and make sure to smile when you cross the finish line.
As for me, lots of short workouts as my next sprint is a mini-sprint. June will see my workouts get a little tougher. I have to whine a little. Rain, STOP!!! Last I saw we are over 11 inches above normal rain fall. I know other places are getting hammered with snow but I have just about had it with rain. [/Whine over] |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training My run plan is something I put together. It is all based on feel. If I didn't sleep well the night before then I don't try to push myself very hard. I have been doing short runs (mainly 3 miles) 2 or 3 days a week. One of them I do 1 mile at 8-9 minute pace and then run as hard as I can (usually 7:20m pace) for the second and then back down to 8-9 minute pace for the last mile. Don't know if that is officially how to do intervals but it is what works for me. I was stuck at 25m 5k for 3 months and could not get any faster until I started my current plan. Good luck with the race and don't forget the most important thing of all! HAVE FUN!!! |

Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training New day and small problem. I thought I'd planned for everything for my first race but I discovered one thing that I have no control over. TEXAS WEATHER! We are never this cold in May. Tomorrow morning it will be in the 50's at my Wave start time. When I did a swim yesterday, it was in the low 70's when I left the pool at 6:30a. *smh* Running options through my head as I'm not worried about the cold for the swim, I'm more concerned about how to gear up for the bike and run. I had not figured changing of or adding on of clothes for the bike but in these temps, it's a given.
Wow! Just wow! |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Interesting how the best thought out plans can be changed. Found out yesterday that there is a mini sprint (640m, 12 mi, 5k trail) next weekend about 10 mins from my house. I can get up at 5:30, be at the race by 6:15 for a 7am start. Much better then the usual 4:30 wake up call. I should be back to the house by 9-9:30 am. On another note, went to swim this morning and they had the pool in 50m setup. Doing fist drills on 50m lengths is interesting but did okay. So, how did the weekend go? |
