Regular 70 NW Houston | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training GaryRM - 2013-05-06 9:34 AM Interesting how the best thought out plans can be changed. Found out yesterday that there is a mini sprint (640m, 12 mi, 5k trail) next weekend about 10 mins from my house. I can get up at 5:30, be at the race by 6:15 for a 7am start. Much better then the usual 4:30 wake up call. I should be back to the house by 9-9:30 am. On another note, went to swim this morning and they had the pool in 50m setup. Doing fist drills on 50m lengths is interesting but did okay. So, how did the weekend go? What is a "mini-sprint" vs. a "sprint" (your distances look pretty similar to the sprint I did last weekend)? I did participate in my 1st tri this weekend and had a blast. Started my race log but not complete yet but will post it in the next day or so. That's how MY weekend went. |

Master 2484 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Patman99 - 2013-04-29 8:42 AM OK, here is a question for everyone. I have clipless pedals on my bike. Should I go with my road bike shoes or invest in triathlon shoes? Then of course there is the whole practice getting on the bike with my shoes already clipped in. Suggestions? I started off with mountain bike shoes to save money when I first started and just had spd pedals on both bikes. Then I went to road shoes then tri shoes. I still don't start with my shoes already clipped in. I don't feel any faster or slower in any of them, but I'm sure the tri shoes gain me a few seconds or more just because they have one strap vs. three or three plus a buckle on my road shoes. It really depends on how much saving the time is worth to you. You could always wait, research shoes, then shop around for year end clearance sales. |

Master 2484 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training dwpiggott - 2013-05-02 3:39 PM Group question? Have been reading about heartrate training and researching heartrate monitors for wife and I and am overwhelmed by the volume of products, any recommendations/experiences to share? Also, should I get just a heart rate monitor with strap, or try to combine it with a GPS type device as well? Thanks. I went the simple route with the Timex watch and heartrate strap. I didn't buy the ANT option that allows for automatic uploads. I just looked at average and max heart rate. It did what I needed it to do, make sure my easy runs were easy enough, make sure my hard runs were hard enough, and do LT tests. I have yet to buy a GPS device. When I get the urge I ask myself why and always come back to the fact that I'm a nerdy engineer so it would be a fun toy. |

Thanks, I ordered the Polar FT4 for the wife for Mothers day, this will give me a chance to figure out if it will also work for me or if I want to go $$ and include GPS unit. |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training So I sustained a concussion on Saturday 4/27 while umping a HS Varsity baseball game. Took one into my mask right on the right temple. I came to with the coaches and the trainer standing over me telling me not to get up yet. I felt OK after a few minutes and completed the game and did the second game in the field. Also went to some friends Sat night and felt fine. Sunday however had nasty head ache and counldn't stay awake, same thing on Monday. Finally made it to the DR Wednesday and he couldn't believe I was so stupid . Finally feeling better and got my first workout in since then yesterday, a 4-mile run and felt pretty good. Am still not cleared for my 10k Saturday, will see the doctor Thursday just to make sure. Moral of the story, take all concussions seriously, head trama is dangerous. Thankfully, I appear to be doing OK in spite of myself. |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Well got an easy brick in today. 3miles on the bike and 2.5 mile run. All around 40 mins. I am just getting over my 3rd sinus infection of the year. Not fast by any means but at least I got out there. I may start 2adays this week just to try and build myself back up. I may actually go for a short run tonight. Depending on how my Oly goes this year I am really thinking of training for a HIM next year. It may be fast but so far I am really enjoying just getting ready for the race. |

I am taking this week "off" and have put together my training plan for the next race. Plan to do another sprint the 1st weekend in August. Another local one for me. Originally I had planned to go to my old stomping grounds but the swim is 200m in a pool. Not interested. |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Well did an easy 2-a-day today. Ran 3.5 on my lunch and another 2 miles tonight before my headache shut me down. This is my first decent week of training in about a month. Work has been absolutely crazy and so has home life. So it was nice to get out and run a little tonight. Just some "me" time. Haha |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Race tomorrow should be interesting. Today we got at least 1-2 inches of rain and more rain for tomorrow. Race is on unless there is lightning. The run is a trail run, when I picked up my packet they said not to wear my good shoes. Weather report show 40% chance of rain/thunderstorms as race start. Going to be wet and wild! |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Woke up to a lightning show but email said race was still on. By race start the sky was mostly clear. Great place to swim and my swim was okay. Bike was good but cop had a few of us go the wrong way and added a little distance, time. Run was a trail run and it was all about mud and water. At one point you had to cross a section with water waist deep. The run was slow but a blast (my inner kid came out playing in the mud). Took 3rd in my AG (not sure if there were more than 3) but awards were for 1st place only. Full RR to come. |

Veteran 144 Sparta | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Congrats Gary. Set new PB in 10k, beat last years time by 8 minutes! Pretty pumped. RR is posted. 48 degrees and cloudy, was a little cold at first but warmed up nicely by the 2 mile mark. No problems with concussion, knees a little achy, but that is normal. |

Member 112 Statesville , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Open for Training Well I parked the car today and ride the bike to work. Save some gas and got in some training. 25 miles round trip. I am going to try to start doing that 2 or 3 days a week. Going to TYR the y in the mornings for a few days also and see if we like like it. Really just want to do it for the swimming. We will see. I am going to try to go in the morning. |
