Congrats Deb and Tiernan!!  You're both offically triathletes now!!

Unless Deb signs up for an early May triathlon, it looks like Quincy is next up with the Bay to Breakers run in San Francisco.  This is the one where you feel out of place if you're not in costume or naked or partaking in alcohol along the way.  Expect an interesting race report!

Deb C - 2010-04-19 1:38 PM Had an awesome time at yesterday's race.  Still need work on the swim.

Here are my comments http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/races-view-container.asp?raceid=134490

Thinking of adding in another one in May - which is a little longer.  Yesterday did seem a little short, and not that challenging (except for the pool) portion.

Congrats Deb, how exciting.  I am looking forward to reading your race report...but from what you've said here, I feel ya on the swim portion.  Yikes!

Haha Brian, I think you need to run B2B with us...all you need is a blonde wig and some hooters garb, you can find it on Ebay.

I plan on being at least two of your three criteria during some part of the race, I'll let you guess which two.

Seriously, I'll report back...Im not really counting it as a race,  but I am sure it will be interesting.

Had my first OWS today.  Have to say it's nice swimming in the wetsuit, but the lake was still pretty cold.

I went off with the beginner group and we worked on drills and just getting acclimated to the water.  We'll be going out every Monday for the next 6 weeks, so hopefully I'll be good and ready for my sprint in June.

What a great idea.  People keep telling me the water will still be cold in May, even with a wet suit.  We don't have very big lakes around here, so that surprises me.  You'll do great.  Let us know how the drills in the OW are coming along.

I bet you can find a triathlon club that will be organizing regular OW swims fairly soon, even with fairly cold water.  Coloradans seem to tougher than the rest of us....

I once swam in Colorado and got winded really quickly from the altitude.  Today I tried to run some 800m intervals at 7,000 ft (Mexico City) but had to cut them down to 400m and slower than normal.  I don't how you guys can train that high!

When I moved here in 2003, I was winded for more than 3 months.  It's now been 7 years, so I'm pretty used to the altitude.  I'd probably had the same experience you've had if I didn't live here.

Thanks, Quincy.  Trying to find an open water club out here.  Hope to get back to the pool in the morning.  Been watching a lot of videos and reading articles on Active.com.  Need to apply them.

Just after your thoughts on something.

I am signed up for a triathlon on 23/5/10 which is a 750 sea swim (my 1st ows race) 20k bike and 5k run, now since signing up to this race which is 100 miles away from where i live, a local leisure centre has decided to do a race on 16.5.10 (the sunday before) and this race will be a 400m pool swim, 27km bike and 10k run.

As a local event i have a couple of friends entering so i would like to do it with them, but is it asking too much of my body to do 2 races in 2 weeks ?

I did my 1st race on sunday gone and am back in training already (see my log for what i have been up to if of use when replying)

Dropping out of the sea race is not an option as its near where my dad lives and he is going to come along and support me.

Thanks for your help guys.

Tiernan,

Do both!  I don't think recovery will be an issue for you.  And it's always fun racing with friends!

If you're looking at the second race as your "A" race, just train through the first one, maybe taking the day off the day before the race.  Think of the first race as speedwork training and transition practice.  The recovery that you need after the shorter triathlons is mainly due to running hard, but a 5k run doesn't require much recovery time.  You might want take the Monday after the race off or with light training, but then finish the week as you normally would.  I suspect you need more recovery time after a rugby match than you do after a sprint distance triathlon.

Hi Croyston,

Thanks for the link, very interesting, i have not ever really considered how far we run in a game of rugby but running iover 5k in a game makes sense as most rugby players can go do a 10k without training, even the big 6ft 4 guys weighing 18 stone plus manage to run a 10k in under an hour.

I think my time as a player has served me well, and with retiring tomorrow (my last match) i will not miss the impact of the game.

fingers crossed i dont pick up an injury as i have signed up for a marathon next sunday! i love a challenge !!

Thanks Brian,

I decided to go for it, as you said i can treat is as training, both races are different distances so its not as if i will be doing the same pace for 2 weeks in a row either.

Today i also signed up for my 1st marathon, next sunday, nothing like short notice !! its actually 27.2 miles and starts at sea level going up to 1000 ft 3 times on 3 different peaks, so should be a real challenge, but i need to do this if i want to do the 70.3 and more in the future.

I also signed up to another race in september too. a busy but very exciting year. Having a reason to train doers so much for me, i ran tonight a slow 8 miler with a grin on my face all the way round thinking about the marathon next week !!

Hi Guys,

I have just seen this thread in the forum and feel a bit silly, http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=205132&start=1

It seems most say to this guy not to do it, but i really dont see why not, i am in exactly the same boat as this guy with my marathion this sunday.

Its not as if he is new to running, a half marathon is just a 2 hour run is it not ? he's not competing to win, anyway i sent him a PM saying go for it, just take care of your body, adjust the pace, enjoy the experience.

I much prefer to train with a race in prep for a race than just on a run on my own, it makes training a whole lot more enjoyable.

T - I agree with you, run the race.  As long as you go in with the mindset that it's a training run, and you are out there to have fun, there should be no harm.  As you said, listen to your body and it will tell you if you are doing too much or not.

Best of luck on the run!

I've never run a marathon (why would anyone want to run for 26 miles straight??) so I don't know personally the stress it can put on your body.

I agree with Chris, though.  Listen to your body.  Keep the pace easy.  Don't be afraid to take some walk breaks every mile (I know you don't like to!), and if you start to feel pains in your knees, hips, ankles, etc that you think will be worsened by continuing to run, walk rest of the way.

You seem to do well in races with relatively little training and you seem to recover from them fairly quickly.  I don't seem to remember you complaining about running injuries.  You still need to be careful, though.   And have fun!

Hi everyone,

Thank for all your inspires for my race yesterday. Unfortunately I decided not to race, here in the uk we have had some lovely weather for the last 3 weeks but being a bank holiday weekend it was no suprise the weather took a turn for the worst.

What with this being a hills marathon climbing over 1000ft 3 times in torrential rain (and it turned into sleet aparently) i decided i did not fancy driving 2 hours to the race for a beasting by the elements.

Instead of racing i decided  saturday morning I  would meet up with my rugby team who had gone off on our end of season club tour to devon 4 hours away to play 2 games, one on sat and one on sunday.

I got there missing the start of the game but played 60 mins, then we went out painting the town red and dragged orselves to the 2nd game on sunday morning. I took my wetsuit with me as it is coastal but unfortunately i would have cost me £4 to park just to swim for 20 mins so i did not swim in the end. Unfortunatyely I had my left ankle and achillies stamped on in the 2nd game and had to hop off the pitch after 25 mins, so today i am sat icing it back home.  Slightly concerned as i have 2 races in 2 weeks time but worst case scenario i will still race but not do the run.

I knew there was a risk of getting injured and hey presto, thats happened so i am not going to beat myself up about it, whats done is done, so onwards with the swimming this week if nothing else.

Thanks again for all your inspires, i hope you all had great weekends too.

Sorry to hear about the bad weather, and even more sorry to hear about your ankle.   Hopefully ice and some rest will get you back to training.

I believe I would have done the same thing with the marathon.  If it's not a race that I have been building for, I figure it's not worth 4 hours of misery to participate in conditions like you were facing.
