Not a good day today.  Was on a hillier run than usual and planned to do 5 miles.  End of week 3 of my novice half mary schedule.  Had to walk a bit, but was feeling ok.  Then at the very end, the knee went.  It is swollen and pretty painful.  I am not a happy girl right now.  Will be on the ice patrol and see what it feels like when I can get the swelling down.

Hopefully just an interruption, but not feeling good about it at the moment.

Oh, no! That's awful!  Hope it's something minor.  Knee problems are just nasty.  Is this something that you've had before?  If it's not better by Monday, you might need to see a doc.  Throwing boulders for a speedy recovery.

<throwing rocks/boulders is equivalent to crossing fingers, just sounds tougher>

Good luck with the knee.  Hopefully you'll be fine with a little ice and a little rest.

The half marathon is my favorite race length.  Its long enough to be a real accomplishment but not so long as to be an "event" that takes over your life.  The May marathon that I'm training for sometimes seems like it is always in the corner of my eye and that I have to constantly be "getting ready" for it.

Knee update: One of the guys I work with trained as an orthopedic surgeon, so got an "unofficial" consult at the office today.  He doesn't think I 've torn anything, but does think I need to see my doc.  So off to the orthopod on Weds.  May take the hated pull-buoy to the pool tomorrow and swim some laps minus any kick, just to feel like I'm doing something other than sitting around.

Like the phrase "throwing boulders."  Not nearly as passive as crossing fingers.

Mike- Good call on your half.  I know it must have sucked to skip that race, but I think you made a smart decision.  Not enough people respect the distance and end up injured.

Kim- At least he didnt' say, "OMG!  You must have shredded that thing!".  More boulders for you.

Great pic!  Lotsa open fields for those Minnesota boulders.

Actually, I was just grateful no one from HR came by my office while I had my pants legs rolled up to my thighs while a guy who works for me has both hands on my knees!

Sorry I've been a bit AWOL. Been really busy.

My body feels like a mack truck ran over it. But it's the working on the house, not the tri training that's doing it. I knew I had a 5 week period of high stress - still have 1 more week to go. Funny thing is, I looked at my Ironman schedule and it turns out the week after, I bump up my training - especially the swims. Coincidence? Or divine intervention?

So how is everyone else doing - aside from the injuries and all?

Ouch hope you're recovering well. I'm doing great, ramping up the training now the Munchkin is back at school and the social whirl  (birthdays, births, valentine's day, meet the Mums at morning tea, meet the kids picnic, gee we haven't been out for Thai in ages) that was the first three weeks in February is over.  Lucky hubby is off to Barcelona for a couple of weeks, mainly work but he has four days holiday between conferences.  So, I'll be lonely and haunting the forums for company.

How's the pilates injury?  Doesn't seem to be slowing down your training.

the pilates injury is doing okay, thanks for asking, bruises now yellow and fading fast.  The scabs have all come off (probably TMI) so I can go swimming in the river again - I really didn't fancy swimming in that manky water with an open wound.  I've been doing a lot of training as I have enforced rests next week.  Know this isn't the best way to do it but have a tri in two weeks. Won't be able to train in the evenings, Monday is a holiday and I'm school Mum for the day on Wednesday.  Meeting a friend for lunch on Friday but will cycle the 20km there and back.

wanted to know if others out there use swim fins.  I grabbed some from the 'lost and no-one's claimed them, please feel free to borrow' box and it was amazing.  Can't believe how fast I went.  Apart from the feel good factor, what's the advantage of training with them and what drills are applicable?

cheers

I have a pair of Zoomers - the shorter swim fins. I'm not overly impressed. I know some people use the fins while doing drills - which is the only time I wear mine. I think the advantage is that you can really concentrate on the drill that you're doing and actually move forward. I'd imagine using the kickboard with them is good for a kicking drill. My guess is if you got 'em great, if not, no big loss. There's probably a bunch of threads on this somewhere on BT.

Don't use fins and don't know much about them, but have to share this story.  Last week was sharing a lane with another woman who swims the same pace - pretty slow.  A guy jumped in, which was fine.  Am happy to circle.  But he swam his entire workout in fins and created absolute chaos. Swimming over and into us.  I guess good practice for the open water chaos of a tri, but I wasn't up for it at 5:30am.  We nicknamed him "Mr Flipper Slapper."  He was sending a wake two lanes over and doing straight legged flip turns the threatened to empty the pool of water.   If he swims in my lane again am going to take Cpt K's advice and share my fist drill with him.  Laughing

that is just plain rude, I'm sure there's a PhD somewhere in there - sociology of lane ettique or lack thereof.  Is it because we're territorial?  At the pool once, this guy just dived into the lane, even though there were others empty and it really upset the woman already swimming there.  She told him he was rude and why wouldn't he swim in the empty lanes, he said he wanted to swim in this one - it escalated (private pool with no life guards) until eventually he called her a 'fat trout' and she burst into tears.  Management got involved and later told me that was the second 'incident' that day and they'd had to separate a couple of blokes who'd come to blows in the pool at about 6.45am.

Swim breastroke and give him a swift kick in the guts next time.

Doc gave the OK to start back on the bike, so did an easy hour on the trainer after work.  Knee is a little tight, but no real pain.  So it will be bike and swim a few more days and see how the knee holds up before trying to run again.  It's funny, I never really wanted to run until I started doing tri's.  Now, I can't stand the thought of not being able to run whenever I want.

Hope all the other injuries in the group are healing.

Mike - Very sorry to hear that. Focus on what's important. The thing is, when one door closes, another one opens. It's just the transition that feels so sucky. Keep positive and you'll end up in a better place than you were in the first place.

Mike - sorry about losing your job.  Its a tougher economy now than when I was out of work about a year ago.  Now's the time to think about big changes, re-evaluating and retraining.  Find out about all the state-sponsored programs too.  Resume writing, interview tips, etc.

Keep up with as much training as you can - you'll look better, feel better, and therefore come across better and more positive during interviews.

Best of luck - it can be a trying time, but you'll come out of it fine.

So, for some odd reason, I had a smashing run this morning.  Hit my first two "mile" splits almost 30 seconds each faster than usual.  It was nice and comfortable too - like I hit a groove.  I was in the low 8 min/mile the whole time with a low heart rate.

I'm happy about it and just wanted to brag.

Thanks

Who has got races coming up soon?

I've got a mini-sprint on April 19th and I have yet to get on a real bike for a ride (Almost never ever since I was 12.  I've owned a mountain bike for ten years.  The first ride I do on it will probably triple the time I've ridden it total.  Its getting a tune-up this weekend)

After that, its a full marathon on May 3rd
