what does your son play?

So when I was a kid, my parents tried to get me to play clarinet - only because we already owned the instrument from my older sister.  I hated it.  Gave it up after only a few weeks.  So for my son, they test out all different instruments and see what each student is best suited for.  I'm thinking...please....please...not clarinet.  THere's only one thing worst.  And sure enough...The friggin' flute!   At least he's in a school where band isn't that bad of a stigma.  (It was in my school.) And he's not the only boy playing flute either.  Definitely different than when I grew up.

LOL!  I have to laugh -

I think the flute would have been a stigma years ago where ever you went to school

what year is he in school?

Just sayin...

Not that there's anything wrong with it...

Yeah - actually my son (sophomore) does hang with a nice bunch of young ladies.  Last year as a freshman, even the senior girls were all over him.  I think more in a motherly sort of way.  But he loved it.  It's amazing once you put your macho image aside...

I played french horn in HS band.  I also picked up the trumpet for jazz band and the Baritone for pep band.   I love playing brass!

Funny all the brass players were boys at my school... flutes were girls and clarinets were a mixture... strings were a mixture too...

There was a bumper sticker stating the fact on my first french horn's case.

...and there are a few guys who will vouch for it.

I started late-Band Camp isn't really a big thing after middle school.

I swear, when my son tells a story that starts with "One time...in band camp..." I just can't help but burst out laughing.  Not even sure if he gets the American Pie reference.

Well this can lead to some interesting discussions...

But, how about some nice equipment that you have your eyes on.  Reward yourself with a dollar figure, and then when you got enough saved up, buy that special item.

It probably does depend on your school.

Regarding french hornists being the best kissers-It takes a lot more control to accurately hit each note of a FH compared to other brass instruments.  on a trumpet there are more or less three notes(or less) in a single octave that you can play with a single valve position.  On the french horn I can manage to play the majority of the notes with the same valve position-granted that the notes don't all sound that great.  Think of a bugle-there are only a few notes that can be played...it is a trumpet w/out any valves.

basically-french horninsts typically need to better developed lip/muscle control than most other instrumentalists.
