Great job. Like I said, on race day, since you are going to be hours ahead of me - I want a cold beer, a bagel, and save me a spot in the massage line. ha ha Great ride! Cheers, Mandy |

Regular 91 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread MillMan221 - 2010-03-19 9:10 AM I think the Stirling Hotel idea is great - what days look good? Maybe during the week around 6:30 or so .... thoughts welcomed. Sam your long ride sounds great! It's a great day for riding in NJ - we should hit 70 degrees and it's sunny. I rode yesterday in the swamp and the weather was similar to today - gorgeous. I rode a bit yesterday with someone I met while riding - he also assisted with a flat tire which was nice. I had patch kit, etc but no CO2. Duh. It was nice riding with another person - 95% of the time I ride alone. Walt I saw your post about Saturday -this week I have a field cleanup dat for little league so I cant do it. But we will have many more weekends. Where do you NJers do open water swim? I go to Stirling Lake - but have heard of another lake also in Morris County (further north) - I think it's Budd Lake or Sunrise Lake (?). Anyday but Thursday at 6:30 pm during a weekday at the Stirling Hotel will work for me. I only have the Nav E Sink 1.2 mile swim planned so far. I was hoping you would all know where to go for some close by open water swims. I was thinking about using the BT beginner HIM plan to prepare me for Timberman. Anyone know of other beginner HIM plans that I should be considering? |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread John- Thanks for sharing your exel translated training program. This will assist me while I'm trying to tweak a plan I've formulated for a friend of mine doing the Whirlpool, Steelhead, Ironman 70.3 this year. On another note. Glad I pulled the trigger and cycled yesterday in 57 degrees. My run today was in pelting snow. I still covered the 9 miles I set out to do, and my calves held up better than my last long run, so I'm feeling pretty good about my progress. Everyone staff healthy and safe. Peace. |

Good stuff, looks like a solid plan! I like how you have your paces and HR zones in the spreadsheet, easy source of reference. I've printed all my stuff out and put them up in my office and in my bedroom at home, but every time I tweak something--new HR training zones, modifying mileage based on previous activity, etc--I have to switch everything up. I'm thinking of getting a coach this season to do all the thinking for me I've done a 4 hr (70 miles) and 2:30 (40 miles) ride the past few weekends, plus long runs of 18 and 20 training for Boston...base is real, real solid right now, once the marathon's over I'll start focusing on getting faster because that's my real holdup at this point. This weekend was BEAUTIFUL for training, I love the spring! Unfortunately the nicest day of the year (70 degrees on Saturday) corresponded with the last indoor TT of the offseason. I've improved by leaps and bounds (300w and 22.5 mph avg this year vs. 235w and 19.8 last year) but it still stunk wasting such a beautiful day riding indoors! Are people outdoors for all their training at this point? Some of the bike rides have been a bit chilly at 35-40 degrees but bearable. I can't wait for the water to get to a decent temp, do some open water swims. |

Regular 58 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Hey everyone! I just signed up for timberman (will be my first HIM, in fact, just started training in January) so I'm extremely excited about the race. Wanted to introduce myself and get to know you all so I can have some company when I make the drive out there from Buffalo (about 9 hrs!). Here is my 'bio', hope you'll indulge me for a minute and learn more about me and then I hope to learn more about everyone in the race group! NAME: Ryan Knapp STORY: I'm 26yrs old, lived in Buffalo most of my life, except for when I lived in Spain for 4 months and 1 year respectively. I run my own soccer business (www.bflofutsal.com and www.statzpack.com) amongst other soccer related activities. I'm 6'2 190lbs. I decided soccer and other sports wasn't enough and needed a new challenge, thus why I'm here doing Tri. I knew I wanted something different, and boy did I find it. FAMILY: Married to my wife Renae since Oct 10, 2009. She is a phD student at University of Buffalo finishing her dissertation in Behavioral Neuroscience (she's a smartie). We have a shetland sheepdog named Ella who will be 2 in April. TRAINING: When I started I signed on with Jeff Klien (www.prsfit.com) and he has helped me through my training thusfar. I am a firm believer in getting a coach when starting something new if at all possible, thus my decision. He plans my routines as well as my nutrition (when I actually do the log for that). SWIM TRAINING: I swim around 2700m M W and F. Varying distances and sets. My cousin is a DI swimmer and she is in the pool with me twice a week to help me work on my stroke. My problems are with reaching and being long in the pool and keeping my elbows high. BIKE TRAINING: I bike 2-3 times a week. Saturday is my long bikeride (last weekend was 2 hours, did about 27 miles out and back with a 15 mph headwind for the back). RUN TRAINING: I do 3-4 runs a week. Did my first actual race a month ago, just started doing actual races (did my first 5k in 21:45 a month after starting to run and a 8k in 36:05 a month after that). I play soccer, futsal, basketball, softball and hockey whenever possible, so plenty of cross training. INJURIES: I have had surgery twice on my right ankle. Once was in 2002 to remove bone chips and in 2007 I had Brostroms and arthoscopy to repair 2 torn ligaments and also remove scar tissue. Recovery is normally 6 months but I was back on the soccer pitch 87 days later. No other major injuries. MEDICAL: I have EIA (exercise induced asthma) which I use an inhaler for especially when running indoors. Also have had some minor surgeries and a gallbladder removed in 1998 when I was 16. I'm also blind in my right eye since birth (amalyopia). 2010 EVENTS: FOCUS: August 22 - Timberman half ironman. Other small sprints and olympics in the middle to get used to transitions, etc. Boilermaker in Utica and some mud runs tossed in for fun! GOALS: I want to win, something, anything. And not something that everyone gets. When I train, I train hard, and I want to be able to look back and say, yeah, I did that. Only the sky is the limit! Edited by ryanknapp 2010-03-22 4:13 PM |

Just kidding...welcome to the wonderful world of triathlons, sounds like you're well on your way to a great race at Timberman, solid base already and clearly speed isn't going to be an issue! Having someone in the pool with you is a huge, huge help, it's one thing to visualize/feel what you're doing wrong but when someone can guide you and tell you exactly what the issues are you can progress that much faster. Anyway, enjoy the training, with your athletic and competitive background you'll fit right in to this crazy, obsessed community! |

That is crazy fast. Way to go. I fear I am built more for stamina than speed.
Although, my fastest 5K times have been during sprint tri's: 22:30, low 24's.....my best road race 5K is about 26m. If your body works like mine (gawd help you lol) - you'll probably hit sub 19 or 18. and that is hauling azz...!
Welcome to this crazyness - you'll be hooked....or as i like to say: hook, line, sinker, OR : Orca, Cervelo, Asics.
think about that one, fellow triathletes. |

I am primarily outdoors for cycling and running right now. Swimming indoors of course right now, but our lake's ice is g-o-n-e gone! I forgot my ****-ing goggles AGAIN so I had to bag today's swim. I can NOT believe it. This is the second time in about a month and only the second time lifetime I've done that. I guess I'm losin' it. Peace, ~Sam |

Extreme Veteran 475 Watertown, MA | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Mandy, you'll have to give us concerned triathlete's a report on Casey Kelly if you see him pitch. I'm real excited for his potential, best pitching prospect to come through the system since Papelbon (or Buchholz, but he's still a work in progress) Ran tonight without pain for the first time since I hurt my right ankle a little more than a week ago...so relieved, it's a month to the day from the Boston Marathon, it looks like I'll be able to run after all. Six months of training is NOT gonna be in vain! |
