surprisetriguy - 2010-01-05 5:51 PM Nice bike Mr. Cooper.  I think I currently have the thread record for low temp rides.  Month ago, I was riding all week and the temp was around 12-15 deg.

Looks like I should be able to commute on the bike all week.  Swim/strength after work in the morning.  To be honest, I'd rather sleep.  But the Mother in Law is gone... that is kind of like sleep? Right.

LMAO, my mother in law is really a loon!

Got a swim in yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks. Man I suck. 900 yards in 30 minutes. thats SLOW! Know what else was slow, the line waiting for a lane. I hate the Y just after new years. I swear everybody and their brother was their. I give em all 3 weeks till it's back to the couch. I guess thats mean of me to say that, but 10 deep waiting for a lane is crazy.

As far as the mother-n-law, we always make sure she arrives on a round trip ticket.

As for the picture of me riding all bundled up,  um... I'm actually wearing a t-shirt and commuter sandals, I'm just that fat.  Tee Hee.

I do actually think that being from Wisconsin originally and maintaining some internal insulation helps me in the cold.  All of you svelt athletic types are missing a layer.

I wound up home from work at 10am.  Being that I have to leave for work at 5pm, I skipped the swim.  I gotta get this schedule worked out.

In two weeks, I will start having an extra 45 minutes of downtime in Portland OR before I rehook and head back south.  I'm thinking of bringing a pad and doing core training up there somehow.  Or I could sleep slumped on the steering wheel.  Downside to the latter is that sometimes you wakeup and think you're driving.  Kinda scary wakeup.

Good job everybody.

Thank you.

I had a great swim today.

I went for 800m and I was able to swim free style for almost 500m. This is the furthest I have swam(? not sure of tense here) freestyle and I am quite jazzed.

I have a forerunner 405 with HR monitor. I love it. Not sure of all the differences in that and the 310XT, but Garmin makes some cool gadgets!

On the opposite side of the spectrum, there is a great article in this months Inside Triathlon mag, by Tornjorn Sindballe about training and competing in the heat. Cool stuff to keep in mind for this summer.

I have the 305 with HRM. I considered the 310, but the reviews on the use in the pool were horrible. I didn't see a positive review regarding the GPS in the pool or the HRM in the pool. So I couldn't justify the extra $100. I use the 305 for running and riding and then I use my plain old water proof watch (that I had before I bought the 305) while in the pool.

Good luck,
Bob

We are leaning towards 305's rather than the 310 I think.  I am hoping the 305 price drops back to $150.

So I've been riding my bike everyday to work and back (as much as I can), but I wonder if I'm screwing up my training that way.  When I ride home every day (and it gets worse throughout the week) my legs are just shot.  I don't remember that happening when I rode two or three a week.

What do you guys think about riding super easy to and from every other day.  Then I am still getting the mileage, but I can work on pedal technique or something.  (I do have this problem that I want to push hard all the time; I notice that the pedals can go faster and so I make them go round and round) (my wife loves that on datenight).

To sleep I go.

I also have a 305 and feel its quite sufficient. If money isn't an issue at all sure go for the 310 but really for 100 dollars all I hear you get is a stopwatch that works in the water. I'm not sure if I would really wanna swim with it they are fairly bulky.

I don't claim to be an expert, novice or anything but a newbie. However, yesterday in reading the Triathletes Training Bible by Joe Friel it says something about fatigue building up faster than fitness and with out rests you get very little fitness gain with whole lot of fatigued effort.

Here's my 2 cents...

I have a Polar HRM (RS300x) it doesn't have GPS but you can get it as an optional add-on.  Don't know why but Polar doesn't have the GPS integrated.  You need to get a separate contraption for GPS.  The nice thing is that it's modular and less bulky.  The down side is you have more crap.  A buddy of mine has the 305 but it seems bulky.  I decided to go with polar for two reasons.  First, I was looking at the 305 and it just seemed too bulky.  My RS300x is the size of a normal wrist watch (and easily doubles as one).  Second, I primarily wanted a HRM and thought having pace via GPS was secondary.  I saw a lot of spotty reviews about the garmin HRM and had good experiences with polar in college.  Lastly, I new that the polar would work with most cardio equipement at the gym.  According the the manual, it is possible to swim with the RS300x but I've never tried it.

Yesterday I swam 800m in 35 mins. I won't be swimming 1000m for a couple of week but I wanted to poste my time for the 1000m TT. At the same rate that I swam 800m it would take me 44 mins and 46 secs. I am going to enter that as my time and then see where I compare in a few months.

What are your guy's times?

Get it!  This is one of the first swim training aids that I bought and I don't get in the water without it.  Two big benefits for me.  1.  I don't worry about using my arm (wearing the watch) and hand (right had to push the lap button each turn) to do the job of my thumb.  If you dont' know, you put this on your pointer finger with each turn use your thumb to count laps.  I was frequently not hitting the lap counter with my watch.  Now I have piece of mind when I swim that I am getting an accurate number of laps and times.  All of which allows me to focus on my swim stop thinking "did I hit the lap button".  Scott

21 minutes - During the summer months, I'm below 20.  I am usually around 1.50 per100m and trail off toward the end in preperation for the Bike.

Nice job on the swim.  I have over 3700 "slow" yards this week.  I want to get 4 days per week in for the next 4 weeks.  Keep it up!

I had a truly a miserable run today. I'm having company this weekend so I decide to try to get my long run in this morning instead of this weekend.  As luck would have it, we got about and inch and a half of snow last night.  Roads weren't really plowed.  They salted the roads before it started snowing and then they were "plowed" by people driving on them.  In other words, there wasn't a shoulder to run on. I had the choice of running in the snow or in the traffic lane.   I pretty much alternated back and forth depending on with there was traffic.  Luckily (depending on your point of view) I started out at 5:30am so ther wasn't a lot of traffic.  Felt good through about 8-9 (averaging about 09:30/mile) but run got worse as it got later. At beginning I was able to run in the road and then cut over into the show when a car came. Towards end there was too much traffic and I was forced to spend most of my time in the snow.  I'm not sure whether I was just slower in the snow, if it was jus harder and I wore myself out, or being sick and missing my run last week were factors.  Probably a combination of all tree but I completely feel apart on the back 1/2-1/3 of the run.  I guess the silver lining is that I was able to get out and run and my foot wasn't really bothering me.  Other than that the run pretty much sucked...
