Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - OPEN gobluedds - 2010-01-04 6:52 PM AlanaF - 2010-01-04 4:14 PM I hooked up with an old friend from HS on facebook, and she is quite a runner. She thinks I can be ready for a half Mary by May, so she talked me into doing a race. I'm scared, but so excited!! So... does this sound reasonable, or am I biting off more than I can handle? If you are looking to compete for a podium spot, prolly too much to handle....this year! Next year?...who knows? If all you want to do is finish with a respectable time, I say you can do it. Just be realistic in your goals and how much time you are going to spend on running in addition to swimming and biking. Keep steady increases in time and mileage and by May you'll be looking for a full marathon to register for in the fall. A podium spot?? LOL... Finish without dying is more the goal. I know I get cheesy, but everytime I run/bike/swim a distance I haven't done before I just get so excited!!! So the thoughts of 13.1 have me almost giddy |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Hoping there'll be room for one more! mareelouise - 2010-01-04 6:13 PM Hi I'm Maree- hoping there will be room for one more in the programme! I have been dabbling in tri for a little while now- but haven't really got committed to more than a couple of sessions a week. I love the swimming and am well kitted out for ocean swimming with an orca wetsuit, but am a fairly unenthused runner (though that is changing thanks to a great coach in our local tri club) and have to date had a crummy bike. Hubby and I have just treated our selves to some new bikes (secondhand but good) and it is mid summer here in Melbourne, so I am all primed and ready to go! Late 09 I did a couple of 10K running races which I really enjoyed. My goal would be to do a sprint tri before the end of the season here (ends late March) and maybe do an ocean swim or two (mainly need to overcome the fear factor on that one!). I am married and my husband is keen on training too. We don't have kids, but have two spaniels, who both love running and swimming - so they keep us moving. We'd both probably like to lose around 5 - 8 kgs as well- cause we adore good food!! Anyway, hope there is still room at the inn...look forward to sharing the journey with you all. cheers maree Hey Maree. Welcome to the group! I'm jealous of your warm weather |

I can take any extra motivation and advice as well. The kid thing and training, well I just duck tape them and put them in the closet while I'm training. LOL No, no I just turn up the headphones louder so I can't hear the mom, mom, mom. ha, ha. Going to the pool tomorrow since about 2 weeks! Time flys by. Going to really hit it since my first sprint is at the end of the month. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - OPEN Hi Group - I am stoked to be able to join y'all and I am sorry to be coming in so late. Thanks for having me! My name is Dave and I live in the Boroughs around Boston. I'm a teacher and am blessed to have a great wife and three amazing kids (9 7, and 9 months). I have been a runner my whole life - I ran my first 10K when I was nine and my first 1/2 Mary when I was 11. All that pounding early on and the fact that I'm incredibly tight has led to a lot of over use injuries. For about the past decade, I have been hampered by ITB problems and then I discovered a new level of pain when I got Plantar Faciitis while training for the Marine Corps Marathon. I finished the race but my frustration got the best of me and I basically gave up exercising. Without the excercise (and with an intense love of Oreo cookies) - my weight hit 255 and my blood pressure was so high, I started having chest pains. So, in April, My PT suggested that I give triathlons a tri and I loved it. I started out so slow and was able to do the Buzzards Bay Tri in September in 1:40. I then did the Wrenthem Du and was excited about getting is shape and losing 40 pounds. Unfortuantely in November, I managed to reinjure myself while building up my miliage and I haven't done any serious training in since. In joining this group, I hope to accomplish three goals. First, I want to get back into shape and drop a good chunk of my weight and bring my BP and Cholestrol down. Second, I want to do the Hopkinton Tri in May and maybe do three or four more sprints during the remainer of the year. Finally, I want to end this crazy cycle of injuries. Thanks again for letting me join and I look forward to supporting you in the coming months! |

Alana: I think your ability to run the 1/2 Mary by May is possible but I think it depends on a couple of factors: 1) Your present level of fitness. If you can run a couple of miles now without killing yourself - you should be able to do it. If you are just crawling off the coach, it's going to be a challenging endeavor. 2) Your goal in running the race. If you are just running to finish, you could pull it off. But if you are hoping to run it in record time, I'd sign up for a race later in the year. You sound so excited - I'd go for it. Good luck! |

My name is Melissa- I am 38 (yes, the second 38 year old Melissa in the group). I have a five year old son (6 in Feb) and a 3 1/2 year old son. I am a special education teacher working full time with two kids- in my first year of teaching. My overall goal is to find time for myself- to get off the couch and move! I completed one sprint tri in 07' and have not moved since. During that time I was completing my Masters, working full time, and moving-twice. Time to focus on moving my body. I've managed to talk my sister-in-law into doing a spint tri in July-- it will be nice to have her to work out with. I think my biggest challange it finding the time- or better said- MAKING the time to work out. Looking for a pool... Looking forward to cheering you all on!! Melissa Welcome to the group Melissa. Nice job talking someone into this sport ,get her to join group to before we close out. |

Welcome Charlotte. I train with a couple of women around here that are your age and they kick my butt. Age is just a number. Don't feel bad about the lack of swimming, I haven't been since July. Although, I do have to say, that is the one sport that really improves with consistency. It may take a couple of months, but one day, it really does just get easy. Not so easy when you are getting back into after 5 months off like me, but it will come back.

New user 8 The Oil Patch | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - OPEN NAME: Dustin Dunaway aka. Whiskyride STORY: I am 37 years old and have always wanted to participate in a triathlon. In the “used to years” I was a collegian trackster that earned a scholarship in the Pole Vault. In 1997, I fractured two vertebrae, thanks to a drunk driver, while serving in the USAF at Luke AFB, Phoenix Az. I also broke it again during an exercise while stationed at Cannon AFB New Mexico in 2001. Now it seems the only thing I am good at is making excuses. I have a relatively docile job as an Operations Team Leader for a major Oil and Gas Company in Texas. I have the time to work out and the support from my family, but haven’t used it like I should because, I have no accountability to anyone. That’s why I am here. FAMILY STATUS: Married to a very supportive wife of 15 years, four kids, (2 boys=12yrs and 4yrs) and (2 girls=9yrs and 5yrs). CURRENT TRAINING: I am just starting. 2010 RACES: I am signed up for several events this year that progressively get harder. 1. 3M Half Marathon 01/24/2010 2. The Cowtown Half Marathon 02/27/2010 3. PureSport Rookie Triathlon 05/09/2010 4. Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3 06/27/2010 I have told everyone I know that I will be doing this.I want to be held accountable. I know that I am not going to win, which sucks, but the idea of coming in last is a great motivator. I hope it establish a baseline and build on it. WEIGHT LOSS: After my second accident I have struggled with weight problems, I have managed to lose 20 pounds, but have a ways to go. I will do this and cannot imagine the idea of failure! |

I just returned from a weeklong ski trip to New Mexico and let me tell you with four kids there is NO resting. I try and ski if possible 30 days out of the season or every other weekend. I guess I get along just fine. I have talked to my hometown swim coach about what I am trying to do and he agreed to open the pool at the high school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm so I can get the swimming in. I do need help with the whole bike thing though. What should I buy? I have a mountain bike but that would not be very good for what I need to do. I have looked at several bikes and let me tell you I tend to be carried away when buying things. Do I need a tri bike? I have looked at the QR Lucero Lite and would love to get it... and just might, however if I should get something else then let me know? Would a street bike be better? I’m lost on this one! Regular 93 Billerica | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - OPEN whiskyride - 2010-01-05 9:34 AM Welcome to the group, Dustin. Looks like you have no choice but to train now. Get your kids in on it, mine like to hold me accountable as fun game to play on dad.NAME: Dustin Dunaway aka. |
