Brian,
Since you have a race coming up (Good luck BTW Wink) I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on what your pre-race week plans are. I noticed you took Monday off, are you cutting back your training sessions this week? Are you doing anything else "special" for race prep.

I have races the next two weekends, and the one coming up on Saturday is a sprint, so I am really not doing much different.  The day off on Monday was unrelated to the races - just a coincidence my 'life' schedule.  I will probably do a light workout on Friday with the race Saturday, but other than that, this should be a normal week.  During the bridge week, I will probably go a little easier.  With the race Saturday, I won't do a normal long run like I normally would on Sunday and next week won't be too rigorous heading into Show Low on the 5th.

That said, these two races are for fun and I am trying not to overthink them.  I will probably do a traditional type of taper week when I get close to Alcatraz in August and again in November for Silverman, as those are my key races for this year.

Good question, Adam!

Thanks Brain I was just curious what you do for the sprint races. I’ve been contemplating not “tapering” the week before my first race in July. I definitely don’t want to be pushing hard the week before but I’ve noticed that I suffer negatively when I miss a workout. I especially notice it on the bike. I’m one of those people that need’s it to be consistent and slow.

Last year when I did my rest weeks I stopped totally. This year (thanks to your advice) I’ve just tapered back a bit. I think that was a major step in the right direction for me.

Oh and if I haven’t mentioned it recently joining this group has been the single best thing I ever did to improve my triathlon training. Thanks.

I am SO glad you are getting a lot out of being in the group.  I think we are all learning from one another!

To elaborate a little more about taper weeks, everybody works different.  I find I get the best results when I do enough to stay sharp without wearing myself out.  Shorter sessions with more intensity seem to work well, and also build confidence.

Another quick question:

I know I’m not alone in trying to lose a few extra pounds but I’ve been noticing that sometimes after a training session I’m famished. It may not come on right after a session, it maybe later in the day but sometimes I really notice it.

I’m trying to still follow my pre-training diet but I admit to needing to eat more since I’m burning more calories up now. I’m trying to balance it all (I’m still avoiding sweets and sugary drinks) but sometimes I find my body telling me I need to eat a little more. Usually in these debates my mind will tell the body to take a hike but lately the body has been winning.

Just curious if this happens to anyone else?

Adam - This definitely happens with me.  I've recently started added a protein drink (Looking in to Syntrax Isolated Whey Protein now).  It's yummy and fruity and it seems to fill me up and is helping me to eat less after a hard workout.

It's fat and carb free and only 90 calories a serving.

I will be offline all weekend as we are going to the Ozarks to get away from the world.

If you have an event this weekend, good luck and have fun.

If you have workouts scheduled.  Kick butt when you need to and recover when you must.

Have a great long holiday weekend!!!!

I am set, but if anyone does not have one, they are a very good idea.  They provide identification and emergency contact information that won't get separated from you if you have an accident or something happens to you while training.  A really good, 'God forbid I need it, but just in case' item.

Hope everyone is having a great memorial day. Had a great race Saturday, placed second in my division with a total time of 1:38.**, and did an 8k today and was able to lower my run time to 9.20, a personal best for me. Brian, hope yours went well and Carly I hope you enjoyed your race as well!

I signed up to run another 10k next weekend, its the Hospital Hill run, with an emphasis on the "HILL" part, will have to see how that goes, but will be exciting. It draws over 7000 people annually. I am then volunteering at the Kansas 70.3 on Sunday, so will get to see Chrissie Wellington, Pip Taylor and other pro's race, will definitely be very exciting.

Way to go Dave!!!

My race went ok today.  I finished under 8 minutes, with a 7:59.2.  The womens division winner ran just under 5 minutes, she was in amazing shape!  I finished 32/62 for the women and 7/12 for my AG.  I'm pretty happy and it was a nice event to sign up for and do last minute.  It was relaxed and everyone was there to have a good time.

I learned a very important lesson...do NOT forget to take allergy meds on race day.  I couldn't breathe!

In two weeks I'm doing my first oly distance tri.  This will be my longest distance race ever.  My goals is to finish with a smile on my face.  I'm alittle worry about nutrition and pace.  Advice would be happyful.  Have is my race plan.

nutrition plan
- 1/2 half before race take a gel.
- @T1 or mile into the bike take another gel.
- drink water & heed during the bike (do I need to take in a certain amount?  I think as long as I                                                        finish both 20 oz bottle)
- @T2 depending on how I feel take another gel
- @ half way through the run take another gel
-during the run just drink what they have on the course.
