Peak run tomorrow of 22 miles.  Nice and slow but may work in some MP pace.  Hydration and nutrition important tonight and is pretty much my race routine for every long run.  I know what my pre-race meals are and my morning race routine.  I don't stray too far from it at this point.  I know what works for me.

cbarnes1 - 2011-01-14 7:17 AM Jeff- You should refuel within 30 minutes of a workout.  The amount depends on how hard the workout is but should include protein.  What it does is helps you on your next workout.  You will notice the difference when you are working out every day.  A sandwich will do the same thing but try different things to see what works for you.

David - We have 2 months here in Vegas where it doesn't get below 90 degrees.  The bottom line with the heat is that you have to hydrate more and slow down.  I have even seen formulas for every 5 degrees over 70 how your pace will fall.  I don't recommend the slushie though.  It has twice the sugar content as soda and way too many calories.  50/50 Gatorade and water would be much better.

Chris- Maybe you could set up the trainier at the events?  Just pedal until someone needs your help.

Good tip. I had heard about the protein theory. I'll incorporate it this season and see where it takes me. I was eating regular meals last year and my weight was bouncing all over the place.

FYI on my long runs last year. I switched from regular sports drinks to gels in my water bottle, and that worked prettywell. Then, I tried pedialyte. Love the stuff. It really helped my the most. I also has magnesium and I did not cramp. I sweated salt bullets though. It seemed to help the most when it was hot. It appears that I lose the most hydration on the runs.

Patterns: Due to my job I have difficulty finding a concrete pattern for training. I am on call a lot and that messes me up from time to time. For example last wednesday I missed a bike due to a trauma call. But I keep at it. This year I am debating whether to play catch up on the weekends or let the lost time go? These next few weeks are a maintence period for me so I have not been making up training.

Thanks Chris- great idea, since I don't have a trainer yet. I will look for a package deal w/ spinervals. ITs 1730, Off to my run now before it starts raining.

I will try that Jeff.  It makes sense, especially when it gets hot around here.  I do take a Gu about every half hour after an hour of a pushed pace.  Easy runs are usually just water.

So what do you think of our group so far?  Is anything more you would like out of me?  Is the size about right or do we need to open it up for a few more?

I will be here the duration and will keep the thread moving.  For me it has been great so far meeting everyone and I am excited about the Spring.

Chet:  the group is great, and your encouragement helps alot!   I also think that the current group composition is okay.

Update:  I went out for a 1 hour 17 minute run today -- and it kicked my butt.  I have ~15 pounds to lose, and I'm definitely feeling it during my runs.   (My 10km PR from 2008 was 52:18 -- 8:26 minutes/mile.  Now I'm working hard to run 11 minutes/mile for an hour.)   But I've been running every 2nd day this past week -- the start (hopefully) of a good habit!  My goal is keep running every 2nd day, even if it's only for a half hour..   so I can start to habitually overcome the hardest part of running (getting out the door).   The way I figure it, even a 30 minute run 3-4x/week will help me to slowly shed the extra pounds -- which will gradually allow me to run faster (and longer) again.   But for now, I need to be patient.    I also figure that for now, the biking/swimming can wait.

For the rest -- I'm listening to an audiobook of 'Born to Run' by Christopher McDougall on my MP3 player -- a good running partner!   Plus it's also t-minus 13 days until I leave for Amsterdam..   I just can't WAIT to run along the Amstel river again!!!

Chet-

I check into the Wynn on Tuesday afternoon, you can email me at [email protected] for my phone so we can hopefully connect on Wednesday morning. If you cannot make it no worries.

Robert

PS - my tri bike has arrived and I had a RETUL fitting yesterday. You got to love technology. This better take a few minutes off my bike split for what the fitting cost. Hope to get a ride in with this summer weather we are having. 82 degrees tomorrow in So. Cal...

Marc, an indoor Tri, that sounds interesting.  It's cold in Vegas today!!   What is a Cervelo P1?

It's an entry level tri bike.

Chet, I'm right there with you on the recovery routine in terms of the chocolate milk and stretching.  I'll throw some time in on a roller to work out some of the tension in my legs as well.  Never tried an ice bath.  Sounds like something that would feel really good after a LONG run in the heat.

I wish I was watching my kids play soccer. As the Athletic Trainer at a high school, I have to attend ALL home sporting events in case someone is injured.  I love my job, but it does keep me at school late. This week and last week were the worst so far, as of this Saturday, I will have had a home event on 13 of the last 14 days.

On a positive note, I did get in a good workout tonight.  Converting our home office into a home gym was a great move.

Chris, love the pic of your training set up.

Chet, I think we have a good group but a few more would be ok with me. I like hearing all about what is going on and the advice is priceless to me. I think you have been very responsive and have tons of knowledge to give. It’s tough getting on here sometimes but when I do you are always there supporting everyone. Thanks for your dedication.

Chet, LMAO on your post about embarrassing moments. I don’t look forward to any of them or others but Im sure it’s not a matter of if it will happen but WHEN I will have my own. I already have the spandex fear, does that count? I think you are on top with your #1 moment for now. I was kind of sore most of the beginning of the week from the HM and didn’t push much this week. I got a 5.6 mile in on Thursday. it felt great and Im ready to get into a more consistent routine. What exactly is bricks? You are lucky to have Jill. It is very hard to juggle the family, kids, spouse, work and trying to train. What are your pre-race meals and morning race routine? Curious! How was your 22 miler?

I need to get some more knowledge with nutrition and recovery. I just do whatever. MMM, love chocolate milk, I recently started eating the greek yogurt and LOVE it with honey. Never taken an ice bath. Love a nice hot one though, lol.

Mel, good to hear from you. You have lots going on so just keep up whatever routine you can as every little bit is better than nothing at all. Book sounds awesome and great job getting signed up for some races! It will help motivate to move! The volunteer work sounds fun. It would be great in helping to learn more about my new bike and all. I have about 30 lbs I would like to loose and trust me I really feel it out there on the runs. I have really only been running since July and I have gained weight. I am so frustrated about that since I was hoping to drop some weight. I have had a change in medication (stopped birth control) maybe TMI but anyway I think that could be a culprit. Hormones out of whack or something. Im going to check out some audio books.

Michelle, good luck in your new ventures!! Let us know how your doing from time to time if you can. Im with the rest of the gang. Your experience and advice is priceless for me being a newbie.

David, I have never used a HRM but would like to get to that at some point of my training. How are the floods doing over there?

Jeff, Gel in your water bottles, diluted or what? I say play catch up of change your training days to the weekends instead then you wont feel like you have missed.

Robert, would be great to join you and Chet if you get out for a run. It would depend on the time and location. If you can update here if that happens and I can check in with Chet for details.

So Im sure I missed something or someone but hope everyone is doing well. I tend to get these lengthy posts going but I really want to keep up with everyone!!

Have a great weekend!!

Wife just hit the road for her 20 miler.  All down hill after today!  My 22 will wait until she is done.

Mel - they say you lose 50% of your run fitness after 6 weeks of not running.  It comes back though so be patient.  You are doing great.

Robert - I suggest 2 options.  1)  we can over the bridge over looking Hoover Dam (about 7 miles).  It is the most scenic run I know of around here.  2)  We can run the Strip.  I know of a lot of people that run it early in the morning and like it.  i haven't run it other than during an actual race but i can look up the route.  Distance would be just what you are up for.  I am looking forward to it.

Sheila - I will keep you updated about the run!  Maybe we could get Daneen out there too.  How is she doing?

Very pretty bike Sheila!  It is the perfect bike for Iron Girl and riding around our area.  There are a couple things you need to know about picture protocol though:

1)  chain ring always out!
2)  pedals at 3 and 9 o'clock
3)  valve stems hidden by forks

We take our bike porn pretty seriously around here

Marc- Congrats on the new toy.  We need pictures though!  Worthless without pictures

On the topic of weight loss - I struggle a little with weight when I am running or cycling only.  I would like to be a few pounds lighter for the marathon but I can't seem to knock off the last few pounds to my preferred race weight.  I noticed that when I consistently swim with either the bike or run workouts I drop weight very quickly.  I also find myself eating about twice as much!  You become more and more efficient running as you train and you use a limited muscle group.  Swimming uses about every muscle group. When you are swimming well, you hammer your core.  It really works for me!

On New Year's Day, Universal Sports showed a marathon of the Kona Ironman championships.   If I remember correctly it was 2001 and 2006-2010.  Watching those has proven to be pretty motivational while working out on the bike trainer.  What do you guys like to watch on the trainer?  I've also heard Spinervals and Suffer Fest.  Anything else?

Marc - I have done 4 hours on the trainer.  The only thing that got me through was 2 good movies.  It was an easy pace ride, intervals are another story.  I would say avoid anything with commercials.

Sheila- a "Brick" workout is a bike then run.  They are to prepare your legs for running off the bike during a race.  It is tough to get the legs going especially if you have pushed too hard on the bike portion.  It is something I need to improve on myself due to being weaker on the bike.  It is a good time to practice your transition too.

I like option one... scenic run over the bridge would be great. I may have to hitch a ride or I could rent a car for the day.

HOW NOT TO GROUP RIDE!

One of our LBS just started a Saturday morning ride group. I have been unable to make it the last few weeks, but today was the day, I was going for my first group ride.

Get to the LBS and no one is there.  Check Facebook and find out that they switched the start to their other store in the next town south.  Decide to drive down and catch them when they come over the bridge (1st mistake).  As the group goes by, I hop on my bike and sprint to catch them, without warming up (2nd mistake).  Caught them at a stop sign, made a brief intro, then we're off.  I forgot to tell them this was my first group ride (3rd mistake).  They then proceed to attempt to break the earth's gravitational pull (they were FLYING!) Try as I might to hold the wheel in front of me, I just couldn't.  Add to that it was a true cross wind and there really wasn't a drafting advantage.  I ended up in the middle and began to lose touch with the bike ahead of me (4th mistake).  At that point I got dropped!!!  The ride back to my truck sucked.  I was spent, sore and embarrassed.

Needless to say my first group ride finished as a slow, solo spin.  Oh, well, only 6 more days until I try it again.

Chris - hard to jump in mid ride, cyclists aren't as nice as runners.  At least you didn't fall over or take out the group .  Jump in at the beginning and I am sure it will be better.

Robert- I get off at 7:00 in the morning Wednesday and can swing by and pick you up.  Sheila and Daneen can meet us out there.  You will like the run.  I will get more details this week.

22 miles DONE!!  Start that taper!!!!

Wow, lots of posts!

Sheila - we got off lightly in the floods, beautiful and sunny now, just got back from the beach. It's been a strange event, everyone has had unbelievable rain but some areas have been devastated and others nearby are totally unaffected.
Love the bike!
As regards the weight gain, I read something in Runner's World about people gaining weight when they started running; the theory is that sometimes you do less exercise/move less for the rest of the day if you've had a run that morning. You also often eat more. You have to make sure you stay active all day even if you're feeling tired by your run.

I need to get my body fat down (saw Brad Pitt in Troy last night, feeling bit inadequate now...!)

I find swimming really helps with general weight loss/toning but when I go to my Surf Club squads I'm quite often tired and stiff between my shoulder blades the next day, they mix in adults with teenagers and some weeks it's pretty tough.
I've been swimming on my own over Christmas and enjoying it more, I also think I do drills better on my own.

Did a swim immediately followed by a ride yesterday morning, felt good.
Got an easy run in the National Park scheduled for later this afternoon once it cools down.

First tri in 3 weeks (Caloundra Sprint) and have 1.2km ocean swim on 26 January (Australia Day), I've been invited to help crew a yacht next weekend in a race from Brisbane around Moreton Island so I'll be making sure I get all my activities done between now and Friday.

Thanks for helping us all Chet, groups getting pretty activeSmile
