Happy Birthday.  Just got back from the gym.  Did my run/walk at 3min/1min.  Would the 3minutes running intervals count?

Aloha all

Happy Birthday Anne and welcome to all the new comers!

Went out for my 27 min walk and 3 min run last night. Sounds daft, especially to all you toned bodies out there but I was a little nervous after not running for 2 years.

It was fine and (of course) really easy. No ill effects and raring to continue. (Did have an issue with all that weight I have but it is reducing and I do have to start somewhere)

I will to my 100 challenge test this wednesday. YIKES! That is tomorrow!

Tomorrow I will sort out my training page and hopefully add you all to my friends list and start to stalk your logs (Evil smile)

Off to the pantomime tonight (It's a uk think not sure I can explain it to you so ggogle it)

I will start to update seriously on the site from tomorrow. (What joy! I hear you all say LOL)

Mahalo all and enjoy another darn day in paradise.

Hello everyone! I guess i should say a little about myself and say Happy Birthday to Anne I will definitely be doing at least 3 laps in the pool today and I'm sure i will find an appropriate use of the 8!

A little about me: I am 23 years old finishing up my masters in June!! I was a very competitive swimmer from the age of 9 to 18...made it to olympic trials once but never made it back due to a car accident that took me out of competition. I havent done any competitive races in a couple years but ready to get back into it! As of late i have a started a routine of running and swimming but its still too cold to bike outside so the gym will have to do.  I am not very familiar with this website still trying to figure it out so if anyone has any pointers that would be great!

Here is the link for the 100 challenge it explains better than me. I want some strength work I can do anytime any place so this seemed like a good place to start. I am doing the squat challenge and the sit up challenge to.

Welcome aboard.

As for the website, there is lots to see. The forums are pretty self explanitory. There are good articles out there, too. The best way to learn your way around is by trial and error, so get out there and start clicking.

What are you getting your masters in?

I am getting my masters in Bioethics. My main purpose for that is to strengthen my skills as a CRA (Certified Research Assistant

As far as training goes and using various training plans what is the best guideline to use? Should i focus on finishing the specified distance in the allotted time or try and stay within the appropriate heart rate zones and not worry about the time?

First off how are you determining your HR zones? There are several articles and threads around here on determining your zones. I'll see if I can find some links for you.

Secondly, what distance are you talking about? If it's a sprint, I'd go hard and hang on until the end. If it's a HM or an IM, I'd pay more attention to HR zones.

The gym that i belong to does this cardio point analysis and determines your heart rate zones that way. Although i probably need to re-do the test since my zones have likely changed. I haven't decided what distance i wanted to do for the triathlon but i figure starting with a sprint will at least be a good way to get familiar with the sport.

Howdy, all!  I'm back from the edge.  Still nursing the knee.  I've made the commitment to revisit the ortho, although it's not something that I'm looking forward to.  In the meantime, I'm still trying to run, albeit slowly and mixed in with walking.  I'm going to swim today.  In honor of Anne's birthday, 300m x 8 sets.

Happy Birthday, Anne!

ETA:  Welcome to Paul and olive!  (As I said, I've been under a rock for a few days, so I'm a little behind!)

Hi All - This is really day 3 of season 2 for me.  I am 44 (45 on Saturday - Happy Birthday Anne!) and last year at this time I weighed about 230 and decided to really get back in shape.   I trained hard, did a few boot camps and got into tri-sports to enhance my training.  I lost almost 40lbs over the next 8 months, got into great shape and completed 2 sprint triathlons.  I started training for a half marathon the day after my last triathlon and did a bit too much without recovering properly from the race.  I tore the soleus muscle in my right calf and just got release from PT about a week ago.

Needless to say I have put a bunch of weight back on (elliptical just doesn't cut it for me) and really want to do a couple races this year including an Olympic distance (possibly Cranberry Trifest).   My PT says I should only increase my mileage by a half mile each week until I am back over 12 miles/week and this is very frustrating.  I am up to about 6.5 miles per week and really want to get back to doing longer runs.

I had 2 great races last year and learned a ton by making a bunch of mistakes.   I look forward to getting back in race shape, weighing in under 195 pounds and kicking some butt in my races this year.

While I understand your frustration, it's important not to increase mileage too quickly.  Most will tell you to follow the 10% rule when increasing mileage: never increase your total mileage by more than 10% per week.  More than this increases your opportunity for injury.  I would follow your PT's recommendations given that you are recovering from injury.

Go slow and you'll find that the fitness will come and your body will appreciate it!

Good Luck!

Welcome!

I am jealous of your strong swimming background. I just started swimming lessons in October. It's going great for me, and I keep thinking I wish I had discovered swimming 20 years ago.

If your gym has spining classes, that is a good way to work on your cycling in the offseason. Some spin instructors are more "cyclists" and some are more like aerobics classes - you might be able to ask about the instructors there and find one who can help you with cycling fitness and form.

OK, I had three different kinds of workouts.
Morning treadmill run (33 min/3.015 mi)
Mid-day 90 minutes of splitting and stacking firewood
Evening swim (only had 15 min before the pool closed, so went flat out the whole time with the pull bouy).

And happy birthday!

Good morning everyone!

Thank you all for the birthday wishes, and the workouts with 3's in them!

Today is another snow day for me. I was up and ready for work, grabbed the keys to my husbands truck and opened the garage door. It was then that I realized that there was already more snow on the ground than I thought and it was coming down fast. We are forecasted to get 6-9" of snow, so I closed the garage door and headed back inside. I don't like driving in the snow, I've had too many close calls, and I've slid off the road a few times. I just don't do it.

So...
Today I am going to do some Pilates, and some strength training. I may do a training ride if the heart rate calms down, but it's been going crazy since last night. Another reason I wasn't comfortable driving to work today either.

Have a great day everyone!

Morning all!  It's a balmy 32 deg in Central TX but will be in the 60's by the afternoon.  I love winter in TX!  Today I'm going to run and lift, in no particular order.  Hope everyone is well and has a great workout today!
