JJ- - 2012-04-30 1:33 PM Since this is my first Triathlon in September I don't have any Tri Shorts. Just wearing a bib and jersey right now. How soon should I buy a pair and start training in them. I know they are less padded but didn't know if they will make that much difference. I hate to buy them too early because I am loosing weight right now and want them to actually fit in September

I'm also training for my first Tri this June and I picked up my first pair of TriShorts a few weeks ago. I'm a large individual still trying to drop more lbs as well but I would suggest getting a pair sooner rather than later. Getting used to the little padding when you do the swim took a little bit for me, but now I'm used to it. The bike you will definitely notice the difference on your longer rides (I'm in the 240 range so I noticed the difference around 10 miles when I wasn't having to get up off the saddle for undercarriage realignment as I did pre TriShorts. You'll probably notice it later in the ride since I'm sure you're lighter.) As far as the run, I was pretty good with them from day one. If you don't currently wear tights or spandex that'll be a bit of a change as well. Just make sure you're comfortable in them. I used to be self conscious of the way I looked in some of this stuff but now I really don't care. For me it's all about comfort and "self preservation". If the Michelin Man can get away with this look so can I!

David ...

We had been doing our bike training at Hecksher State Park (flat with some wind gusts) and at Cedar Creek (the bike loop from the park to Jones Beach) ... the ride to Jones Beach has three slight rises on the bridges but is basically flat and on neither ride do you ever have to shift.

This Sunday (and Sunday mornings at sunrise are the ONLY day this spot is viable) we rode to SUNY Old Westbury and did the campus loop.  We got there pretty much at sunrise and were about 5 loops in before we saw another cyclist, by 10 loops in there were  LOT of runners (training for the long island half perhaps) and even more cyclists.  The only reason Sundays is the only day this spot works is that it is the only day there is no car traffic.  Since I can not run the Log Island half I plan to be back next Sunday and on the bike at 6am - I will be using my road bike this week and not my TT bike as I want to test over the exact same distance.  Message me here we can meet up if you would like.

Paul

Hecksher Park is in Huntington right?  I used to live there while I was going to acupuncture school.  My school was in Syosset.  Huntington was a nice town while my wife and lived there.  You guys are right though, mostly pancake flat.

You can hold off a little bit, but I would definitely get it well before the race so you have a chance to try it out and feel the difference and get used to it.  "Nothing new on race day", they say.  I would also consider a trisuit.  This is a one piece that is designed to be swum, biked and run in.  Love the onesie.

Holy Frijoles!  April flew.  What are your totals?

Monthly totals:
S:  25250.00 Yd - 5h 13m 17s
B:  299.88 Mi - 15h 13m 37s
R:  73.64 Mi - 10h 32m 10s

Just three short weeks to my first of the season.  I'm also going to be running in the same "track meet" as Troy.  There will be no way that I will break 19, but I am looking to go sub 20.  I will try to stick with Troy as long as I can.  We'll see how it goes.

Ugh ... not so jazzed with my April totals.

Bike:1h 48m
Run:23h 50m 06s  - 175.91 Mi
Swim:5h 00m  - 12800 Yd

Had a nice 2400yds in the pool tonight ... so hopefully I'm back in the swimming groove. The bike needs my lovin' something fierce. Even the run total is a bit lower than it should be. Meh.

But on the awesome news front ... and some of you saw this on Facebook ... I registered for the Philadelphia Marathon today. I'm not running this one for time ... rather, I'll be running it with my older daughter and it will be her first. I'm pretty jazzed!

Here's my April totals:

Monthly totals:
S:  30550.00 M - 11h 28m 16s
B:  231.90 Mi - 14h 22m 11s
R:  70.90 Mi - 13h 33m 36s

My run total was a little lower than I would like. Will have to focus on that more this month. Still trying to close the gap towards what I would consider a respectable pace come race day! I need to find some more flat runs to pump up my numbers! Sounds like a trip to "Strong" Island may be in need??? Wink

Good morning, tri junkies!

I was having a good month until our vacation last week then it went to poop. I missed 4 days of workouts- 2 rides and 2 swims last week. My arms felt heavy in the pool last night but I got in a mile.

Bike:

8h 18m 30s - 134.6 Mi
Run:6h 03m 19s - 40.94 Mi
Swim:4h 08m 39s - 11750 Yd

I am having a hard time getting in my weight sessions. My swimming is getting better as is my running. I still can't breathe on my right side. I still am having a hard time getting in 200-300 miles a month on the bike. I am doing what I can so I can't complain. Working out 5-6 days a week is still better than what I was doing.

Goals for May-

Bike:

200+ Mi
Run:44 Mi
Swim:16000 Yd

This would be a solid month. Gonna hit the road for a 25 mile today (weather permitting). What does everyone have planned?

I slept in today and may end up going home ... not sure what might be circulating, but I've definitely picked something up - sore throat, aches, etc. I can't afford to lose the work day, though, as I remain pretty crunched with case load. If I last through the day, I'll reward myself with a pool workout to at least salvage the lost run this morning.

I'll make up for the run by putting in the miles easy on Friday (currently scheduled as a rest day).

Had an indifferent month this month, got my first sprint tri in just 3 weeks, have booked more races in past May, waiting to see if I get the same buzz in the tri race as I do when I complete in training (well more if I don't make myself look stupid!!!).

Goals for May are

Good luck everybody for the month ahead!!

Popping in to share a success in the pool. The first set after warm up tonight was 5 x 100 with 100% rest. So you rest for the same amount of time as each 100 took. I decided I wanted each split under 1:30 and went 1:26, 1:27, 1:28, 1:28, 1:30. Very pleased.

I'm really glad that everyone is making such great progress.  We all become stronger by using the group.  This is just a brilliant thing that Ron and others have set up here.  If you think to, let Ron and the other moderators know that you are having a great experience.  I'm sure they would love to hear some of your stories as well.

Troy,  you are becoming a fish.  You will do some damage when you get your bike in order.  The Nationals are calling you.

Good morning all ...

Just in from 7.5 easy-peasies this morning. Mixing things up a bit to try and have some freshness left in the legs for Saturday's races. No pool for me tonight ... heading to my daughter's track meet. She's 4" from qualifying for her home invitational in the shot put and about 5 ft. from qualifying in discus. She's thrown the distance needed for each in practice, but not in competition. Hopefully tonight she'll make it happen.

What do you all have on tap today?

Good morning, all!

Troy, that is some impressive swimming. Your running speaks for itself. You are going to whoop your first onesie race.

I got in a 25 mile ride yesterday. Took me 1:28 which is 17 mph average. I am okay with that since I am increasing my ride lengths and maintaining that speed.

I plan on a 5 mile easy run today. That will be my goal for May- 8 runs of atleast 5 miles. By 6/1, I want to try and hit 5 miles at 40 minutes. That is a good challenge. I might throw in some additional short runs with the jogging stroller and son.

What you got people!!

I did 20 second power intervals on the trainer last night.  It was 20 seconds all out followed by 4:40 at 75%, for 5 repetitions.  I hit 757 watts!  That is a personal best for me.  I'll be running for a half hour this evening.

I also just ordered compression socks.  My achilles are a ton better, but I can still tell that they aren't 100%, so I will be trying these as I've read that people have had good luck with them for recovery etc.  Anyway, I'll let you all know what I think when I get them.

Will be checking in throughout the day, I hope yours is stellar.

Hello everybody,

April totals:
S:  7902.97 Yd - 2h 58m 09s
B:  59.17 Mi - 8h 57m 29s
R:  12.12 Mi - 3h 37m 30s

Not much to write about having been injured for half the month.  Good news is today is the first day I can walk without any kind of limp.

Motivation has been down quite a bit the last two weeks but I'm still getting 1-2 swims and rides each week.  I know it should be more and will work to improve my attendance.

Scott, I'm also thinking about compression for my calfs.  Are they just used for training or are they used for recovery?

First of all, if there is anything we can do to help with motivation let us know.  Otherwise, get out there man, and get 'er done.  Wink

Mostly what I have read on compression is that they are showing good results for recovery.  There are mixed results for wearing them for training.
