That would be great if someone checks my log. Perhaps it will give me incentive to set it up :-)

Listen to this bummer... they set up a filter at work...so now when I go to BT at work it tries to stop me by saying it is for recreation, the administrator will know, etc. I bypassed it (I am the boss of my dept)... yet I can't post... only read (which is better than nothing).

Yeah, I saw the link, thanks! I'm ordering mine tomorrow. This healthy stuff is getting expensive, but considering all the money I've spent being unhealthy, I think I deserve it.

Not sure what all the 80 year old ladies that show up in the pool are going to think when they see me slippin' in to those.

We'll be checking your log!!  In fact, I typically try to check the people who have been active in the group and leave them an inspire.  So check yours, and have fun running this weekend!

Glad you took it easy and are now feeling better.  All it will take is a workout or two, and you will be right back into it.

aber4 - 2008-01-10 8:29 PM I think we should establish a goal for Rueben that he is required to post hourly during the evenings to make sure he isn't 'throwing em' back' down at the pub!!!!

LMAO, not a bad idea except, Some evenings I am here at the FD, and would not be able to post every hour ,( " Excuse me mam, yes I know your house is on fire, and your kitty is lost in the thick black smoke...but could I please borrow your lap top??? I can??? Gee thanx!!!") some nights I am working the P/T job at Enterprise Rescue...and the nights that I am home...my wife is about to start her next on line class ( she is going back to school where she can make much more $$$ and I can be a kept man:>D). Since my puter is broke, I have to use hers, and I would rather spend my $ on Tri stuff than a dumb old new lap top...I won't be able to post every hour. An dthey do have free wireless at the bar, but you would easly be able to tell if I was drunk posting LOL.

Hi All,
Have been away for a few days, here's my goal list:
Swim: 2 x 45min
Bike: 2 x 10 miles
Run: 2 x 2 miles
Starting off slow, but making progress! 1st timer so trying to prevent any injury!
Katie

Katie, I'm with you. I'm starting out even more slow than you for the same reason. Don't want to screw up my knees permanently. Best to you.

For those new to running, or just getting back into it, one of the best things you can do to help prevent injuries and stay comfortable on your runs is go to a Running Specific Shoe Store.  I'm not talking Foot Locker here folks.  This isn't about brand loyalty or your favorite color.  I'm talking about a store that will look at your feet, watch you run, and have you try on many pairs of shoes, and run a little in them, to find the one that is right for you.  Most mid-sized and bigger cities should have at least one.  Bring a pair of socks, clean feet, and even the shoes you have been running in so that they can look at the sole.

I did this for the first time a couple of years ago, and I can say it was the best thing I did before training for my first (and only so far) Triathlon.  They moved me up an entire shoe size.  I had no idea shoes were supposed to feel that comfortable!!  I did it again just recently and again had a great experience.  Expect to pay around $65 to $100 for the shoes but it is totally worth it, and if after you decide not to support your local store (although I recommend that too!) at least you know what shoes to order from Zappos.

I have to second the running shoe fit by an expert. I was running in $120 sauconey hurricanes and I had the worst case of PF. I got fitted and got more of a stability shoe ascics foudation 7 and it helped solve the problem... for $79... go figure. I also replace my shoes fairly often.

Socks... well that is another story... another personal preference.

feeling guilty as I signed up for the PF changs half 6 months ago and I am not doing it...GUILT... GUILT... GUILT

I agree absolutely 100%... a proper shoe fit is CRITICAL to the health of your joints and a long life in triathlon!  You MUST MUST MUST have a shoe that is proper for your foot/stride.  And Foot Locker isn't going to cut it, folks...  However, be skeptical of whatever the shoe store sells you.  I ended up in a pair of shoes that I hated because "they were very popular."  Yeah, ended up with a horrible case of tendonitis the day before my first marathon.  Get what's right for you and don't be afraid to spend 30 minutes in them if it will help you decide that they are right for you.  Shoe fit is critical....

aber4 - 2008-01-10 8:06 PM I had to post this since I really can't tell anyone else because noone else really gives a crap but those who know what it's like. At Thanksgiving my run consisted of about 15-20 min, doing about 2 min running and then 1 minute walk. Today I celebrated losing 25 pounds...AND...did my 3 miles in 26:15...first time I've every broken a 9 min/mile average. The best part was I felt good and didn't feel like I was having to push or strain to do it. Now, I know this may not sound like a lot to some of the runners in the bunch but to this FORMER fat it is pretty important to me. So those of you working your way through the walk/run, hang in there because it does eventually get better. ...and now, back in the pool in the morning! Yeah!!!!

We care!!!!  A LOT!  And I am so glad that you shared that with us!  Its inspiring to read stories of personal accomplishment!  CONGRATS to you and keep up the GREAT work!  And FYI:  9 min miles is still pretty darn fast!

Try women's vanquisher competition goggles by speedo! They have a TON of different size nose pieces that come with it that will surely assist in making them fit you right. Also, they have a nice BIG strap that can easily be adjusted for those of us with small heads, and those of you with big heads!

Congrats Alan! Good job with the run. I know how you feel and I only got past a mile this week. Gives me motivation to keep pushing at it.

What dvd did you find on netflix? I've looked, but have never seen anything to use with the trainer.

Thanks, but you need to celebrate the mile because to me that was the hardest to get to...seems like it was incremental gains since then but getting to that first mile seemed the most 'painful.' Good job!

Anyone have any suggestions for me in my swim. The middle third of each 25 I feel pretty good. I stay focused on relaxing, feel like i'm propelling along ok, start thinking about turning it into a 50...and then it all goes to hell...the last 8-10m seems like my stroke falls apart and i struggle. Doesn't seem to make any difference whether it's my first 25 or my 20th they are all about the same. Maybe noone can help without seeing me flounder around but if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. I haven't really started in drills yet until I built up enough endurance to get some laps in....maybe I should go back and do just those.

I am not sure, but maybe you are trying to oush yourself to hard, and when your stroe does not turn out prefect... you get really frustrated.  Just relax and swim...it will come.

I know exactly what your problem is! You aren't pacing propperly in the first lap, and probably aren't breathing full complete relaxed breaths

I'm not sure about the pacing part...I seem to be really trying to focus on going slow. The breathing I'm sure is part of it as I don't think that is very relaxed, in part because of technique. Everything I read says don't lift your head out of the water and I think my roll is so poor that I don't have much choice...which kills any momentum each time I breath.

I believe in fins!! The coach at my swimming lessons made a believer out of me. With the fins I can focus on my form and not use all of my energy trying to propel myself through the h2o. I know you can't use them all the time but I really think they help me to have the time/energy to work on my form.

As for the spin class on netflix the dvd is "Cycle all Terrain" I think I may have the only copy! It took more than a week to get here. They shipped it from St. Louis. It is pretty good, but I'm definitely going to get Spinervals. Someone recommended "No Slackers"

Glad to know I'm not alone with the slow pace and bad knees. I'm giving this pace a couple of weeks then re-evaluate and go from there. Let you know how it's going. Slow and steady to ya!
