#24 - 3.2 miles - The first mile is slooooooooow slogging, but by the second mile, I'm close to a regular pace and my back feels good. Why can't my back feel as good the rest of the time as when I'm running?

The tobacco road marathon, look like rain for Sunday but I do not mind. I am on the road in a few minutes heading for North Carolina.

#25 - 3.5 between AM run and PM trail run.
#26 - 2.5 - Saving my legs for the weekend. The first baseball tourney of the year means I'm behind the plate to call five games Saturday and Sunday. I'm hoping I'll be able to walk, let alone run afterwards.

Day 842, 2.2 miles
Day 843, 1.3 miles
Day 844, 26.4 miles.

I got real drunk Friday night, imagine that, and was still feeling the effects a bit Sunday but no excuses. I finished in 3:40:03 at the marathon which is not bad but not what I was hoping for. I am a little angry with myself for drinking like I did but hell I am a retired sailor and I can still drink like a sailor. Next up the Boston marathon in 5 weeks from today. I still need to get out for my run today and I will in a bit.

Congrats on another marathon. At this rate you can do 50 in 50 states if you wanted, and it probably wouldn't take all that long either!! Like my workout below, you got things out of order. Run first, then drink!!

#512- 2 mile warm up *before* 1:40 on the bike (It was going to be pretty late when I finished up so I ran first)
#513- 16.2 mi. Finished up feeling fine, 10 miles short of marathon distance. Part of me just wanted to keep going!

I think North Carolina was my 13th or 14th state and my plan is to run a sub 4 hour marathon in all 50 states. There are a couple of states I have to go back to run a marathon, Maryland and Florida because I have only ran an ultra there. It still counts towards the 50 states but I want the sub 4 hour marathon as well.

Fierce.

#27 - 2.7
#28 - 2

Baseball was good and not as taxing on my legs and back as suspected.

#29 - 2.4 trail miles, mostly through 8 inches of fresh snow. I can't wait for the snow to melt and the trails to dry out. I feel like my feet have been wet since October.

Day 847, 4.35 miles. I have decided to take it easy this week and recover well from the marathon and then hit some good speed work and decent mileage the next two weeks followed by a good two week taper for Boston. I know I really am not going to gain much fitness by hitting high miles the next 4.5 weeks so I am trying to be smart about this. I really want to PR at Boston and hopefully come in under 3:20 there as well. Please tell me I am thinking right.

I couldn't recover from a marathon in a week and then start some speedwork. But your base is huge, and your marathon you ran is close enough to a long run for you, and you didn't (weren't able to), push yourself to the limit. So you probably could pull it off. Just be smart and don't push through things that can blow up into a genuine injury.

That wouldn't be my suggestion though. Like you said, you probably wont gain much fitness in the two weeks, and maybe I'm crazy to suggest it, but why not take 2 weeks to recover (or maybe at least 10 days??). One week after to test your fitness, get some confidence, and make sure you can hold your projected pace, then If your goal is 3:20, I would try to fit in at least a 20 miler with 12 miles at race pace, and see how you feel. And maybe work in a tempo run pushing a bit faster then HM pace for 8 to 10 miles.

So basically, recover, a quick "sharpening," period where you are very race specific. Put in a SOLID taper, and throw some strides in to keep your turnover sharp. You want to probably be more recovered for this race than at any other time of the year, especially looking to PR. And its not like you will lose fitness. Normal people taper for 3 weeks and run just fine, you have 4.5 weeks, and will fit in a bit of running still.

Maybe if you know people, coaches, or people with real credentials, get their opinion. My suggestions are based on a bit of reading I've done, and what I feel I would do going with gut instinct.

#514- 5 miles easy.
#515- 4 mi after 3:30 on the bike. Just over a 4 hour workout. 5 months or so until my IM, 6 weeks or so out from my HIM, guess I'll just have to get used to it. At least I can look forward to taper weeks!!

Solid advice you have given me, I tend to think that more is always better. Nice workout, keep at it and you'll smoke your IM.

As far as the last marathon went, I had some stomach issues, the screaming you know what, and ended up the potra john 4 times during the run which is why I was so off my pace. I was right on feeling good until the rumblings began at mile 12 and by mile 13 I was in a hurry to sit down. After the second stop I knew a pr and sub 3:20 was out of the question so I just dialed my pace back a little to save myself for Boston. This marathon was also only 6 weeks after my 100 miler. I felt real good at the end of the race and have since other than the stomach issues that I am still having. I have IBS and when it flairs up it kind of stays around for a week or two and then goes away for a while. Hopefully it will not flair up again until long after Boston.

#516- 5 mi

2 mile warm up, plan was 3 x 1 at 6:30 with 2 min RI, I got 2 done, and felt fine, but my treadmill stopped responding correctly. I put the speed down, it wouldn't go down, I considered just finishing the last mile with no RI, but then it started slowing down. Then I tried to speed it up, and it wouldn't speed up. I actually pulled the emergency cord because I couldn't even get it to stop. I pulled the plug, rebooted it, then started running my last interval. I got about a quarter mile in, and tripped on the emergency cord since I forgot to tie it back up. It was annoying, but I actually was pretty happy with my ability to run today considering yesterday was my long day.
