Knee Update-Went back to the doctor this morning. My knee feels better, but still hurts and pops. She referred me to an Orthopedist which I will see next Friday afternoon. Still on crutches until then. but she said I can swim and workout in the pool. Now I just have to find my swimsuit

Hope everyone else is starting to heal up.

I finally got the bike outside today, and even through it was pretty cold towards the end, I managed almost 45 miles in 2:43.  I would have gone longer, but Denver has weather moving in and the temp dropped about 8 degrees while I was out there and I couldn't feel most of my toes and was fighting a nasty 15-20 mile/hr headwind/crosswind for a good part of the ride.  Otherwise, I may have gone for 50-60 miles.  I forgot how smooth this bike rolls on actual pavement, it has been so long since I have been out with it.......

This made me smile, that looks like so much fun!  I hope she whips your into shape!

So, all, after working through a month and a half of strength training, I went out for a 5k race this weekend as a checkpoint along the way towards a 1/2 mary in March.  My goal time was 19:40, but I ended up running 19:24 according to the gun, and 19:20 according to the chip!  I was so pumped to see this, I really have made some great strength improvements in the last training cycle.

This gives me lots of hope for my half marathon time.  My goal time has been 1:40 for this upcoming half mary, but mcmillan running calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm) suggests that I should be able to break a 1:30 with a 5k PR like that!  Very reassuring, I think 1:30 will be my 'reacher' goal time.

Got in a decent swim today, not incredibly fast, but it felt pretty good.  I managed 2250 yrds while my wife did her treadmill work at the rec center.  Our treadmill is broken, but hopefully the part will arrive this week, as my wife and I both use it pretty regularly.

On a separate note, I have a friend that I do business with whose son is competing this evening in the finals of the men's moguls at the Vancouver Olympics, so if anyone reads this post this evening, throw some good thoughts towards Nate Roberts, as I am hoping he has a good showing this evening.

I used to ski race with Patrick Deneen - looks like he got 10th in the qualifiers.  I was hoping he would get closer!  I don't really know him, as I raced with him in 6th-7th grade. . and I haven't talked to him since then.  I love watching the olympics - even if it isn't a sport that I care about - its awesome watching top people do their sports

Jen - Glad to hear your knee is doing a bit better! Good luck with the recovery and the doctor's appointment on Friday.

Bryan - what adorable pictures!!

Got in some decent workouts this weekend and spent some time figuring out a race calendar for the summer. Although I'm pretty burnt out on the trainer now. I cannot wait until the roads are clear enough of snow, sand and ice to ride outside. On the bright side, things are clear enough to put in decent outdoor runs. As for swimming, speed work is starting to agitate my shoulder more, so I need to really start watching it. The last thing I want to be in pain during the swim of my HIM. Just finished up week 4 of my training, 16 to go!

Looks like everyone has been busy!

Rest wasn't helping with the pain, so I'm just going to ease back into things on my own terms.

Weather finally broke here and I've been able to get on the MTB.  I was able to get a good ride in today without pain.  I took it slow and really paid attention to keeping a smooth cadence during the climbs.  It seems to have worked, but it took alot of restraint to not mash at the pedals.

Running... not much to update there.  I'm heading back to ground zero and going to try and start building base all over.

I everyone's been getting after it or getting back from injuries, hopefully within the next 3-4 weeks the weather will turn a little warmer for everyone, so we can all get outside on the bike and run.  I managed a decent run yesterday outside, weather was nice but cold, but my ride last night pretty much sucked.  After being outside last weekend, doing 2 hours on the trainer in the basement again was not fun and I couldn't get a decent rhythm going.  Today, I got an hour in the pool at lunch, which felt good.....so tonight I can coach soccer and enjoy an evening off.

I have my first real sporting injury. Physio says its ITB Friction Syndrome, most likely caused by weak glute muscles, and tight TFL.

I first felt it on a run 2 weeks ago. It started as a little pain, but after about 40mins it had gradually got to the point where it was too painful to keep going. I haven't run since. Had a week at the beach last week, and only did 1 cycle workout. I'm pretty refreshed and ready to get back into it now.

I feel for you!  I've been dealing with this for about six weeks now.  Laid off running completely for two weeks.  Unfortunately, in my case, rest didn't seem to alleviate any of the problems.

Where is your pain, knee or hip-glut?

Ouch.  ITB stuff is no fun.  Had that last fall.  The thing that helped me most was stretching, stretching and more stretching.

Had an awesome swim workout last night. I did somewhere between 1950m and 2050m continuous for the main set (the fact that I know I did one of 3 distances is amazing considering how bad I usually am with counting) which is basically my swim distance for the race.  And I crushed it!

Then I tried to do my hour run this morning, which was failure.  I don't know what was going on, but I had to quit after 30 minutes due to exhaustion and pains in my right knee and heel. Maybe I shouldn't have skipped yoga yesterday... My  easy run tomorrow followed by a rest day could not be here sooner!

Found out I'm not going to need knee surgery. Turns out it wasn't the meniscus after all. Its bruised and the MCL is strained, but not torn, and I might have some tendonitis where my calf muscles attach near the knee from limping around over the last month. . Gotta take it easy over the next month and slowly increase my activity. Still gotta wear the brace for awhile, but no more crutches. Looks like its time to hit the pool.

*Had to edit muscles. I'm an engineer not a doctor.

Wow!  Good news.  The pool definately sounds appropriate.  Time to love the swim!  When I fractured my tibia plateau, I also bruised a portion of the miniscus.  Can't remember which surface anymore, but the point is, definately take it slow.  The miniscus will take a long time to heal since there is very minimal blood flow to this tissue.

Well, I might not be able to run much, but at least I'm making improvements in the pool.  I hit a new PR for 100 yards today at 1:24.  If I can keep my swim numbers up, I'm hoping to break 1:20 in the next couple months.

If anyone is interested, I came across this blog for swim workouts:

http://www.ntcmastersswim.blogspot.com/

Pretty good workouts with three different ability levels that is updated three times a week usually.

As for my ITBS... Same ole, same ole.  Naproxen seems to be taking the edge off.  I'm a little worried that its only masking the discomfort though.  I guess after the two week dose we will see....

Hope everybody's injuries are doing better. I managed to hit my head twice over the weekend and messed up my neck. Now I just hope it gets better before my next swim on Thursday. Other than that, had a decent workout yesterday and a good 45minute bike this evening.

Everybody on vacation or something? I went to the doctor yesterday about my head (massive headache following my falls over the weekend, missed yesterday and today of work), turns out I have Post Concussion Syndrome. Basically I have a constant headache that will probably stick around for the next week, I will continue to have difficulty focusing and concentrating at work, I have to keep my heart rate a good distance from my max, and I cannot fall and hit it again for awhile. So I'll be doing a much lighter version of everything until the headache is gone and stopping any workouts if it gets worse.

Time for a new snowboarding helmet I think! How it's possible to get a concussion on a full blown powder day is beyond me.

I went to the pool this am and swam. Shoulder was giving me some problems so cut it short. Did walk and jog about a mile around the track after, went shoeless!! we'll see if my feet get sore. I'm reading born to run and am swallowing the kool aid. Very interesting book. Hopefully My injuries don't get any worse. I keep pictures my self doing wrist curls or something to get my aerobic in!! Oh well keep it up everyone!!

Wow!  We are one banged up group of individuals.  I'm still suffering from hip-knee issues.   DC has referred me to physical therapy.  I have my first appointment next week.  In the meantime, I started to focus on the cycling again.  Decided I might as well get an early start on building my cycle base for this season.  As for the run, just been keeping it nice and easy around two to three miles at a time.  I'm suppose to do a couples relay with my wife this weekend.  I'll see then just how hard I want to push it.

Hope everyone is recovery better than me!

Did the couple's relay with my wife this morning.  Felt a little cramping in the glut, but no pain at the knee or hip.  I felt pretty good other than being out of run shape.   Coarse was mainly a flat, paved trail around a man-made lake in downtown Oakland.  Both team members ran a 5k.  My wife ran her portion at 30:37; I finished my 5k at 19:38.  So much for taking it easy, I'm too damn competitive for my own good.  Had a chiropractor do a quick ART treatment after the race.  I got my finger's crossed that I'll feel just as good in the morning.

Well, I finally got in a day with a couple of workouts that I could actually respect myself about....these last couple of weeks have been really tough with family and work commitments, but Sunday I managed a mile in the pool while my wife ran on the treadmill at the rec center.  Then she drove home and I ran home (which is about 6 miles away), so I actually felt good about a training day, which hadn't happened for about 10 days.  This week is a big swim week for me, with training calling for better than 6 hours in the water.  Next Saturday or Sunday (depending upon which day we go skiing) I will get the full IM distance swim in, so that will be interesting to see what kind of time it takes me to get it done.....
