cornfed - 2010-01-08 1:47 PM I had a truly a miserable run today. I'm having company this weekend so I decide to try to get my long run in this morning instead of this weekend.  As luck would have it, we got about and inch and a half of snow last night.  Roads weren't really plowed.  They salted the roads before it started snowing and then they were "plowed" by people driving on them.  In other words, there wasn't a shoulder to run on. I had the choice of running in the snow or in the traffic lane.   I pretty much alternated back and forth depending on with there was traffic.  Luckily (depending on your point of view) I started out at 5:30am so ther wasn't a lot of traffic.  Felt good through about 8-9 (averaging about 09:30/mile) but run got worse as it got later. At beginning I was able to run in the road and then cut over into the show when a car came. Towards end there was too much traffic and I was forced to spend most of my time in the snow.  I'm not sure whether I was just slower in the snow, if it was jus harder and I wore myself out, or being sick and missing my run last week were factors.  Probably a combination of all tree but I completely feel apart on the back 1/2-1/3 of the run.  I guess the silver lining is that I was able to get out and run and my foot wasn't really bothering me.  Other than that the run pretty much sucked...

Hard Core man! I stay on the treadmill this time of year.

Good job getting the run done.

What can we learn from the run.  What did you eat for breakfast?  What fuel/hydration did you use?  Was this a physical bonk or mental bonk?

Eagleone - 2010-01-07 3:44 PM Get it!  This is one of the first swim training aids that I bought and I don't get in the water without it.  Two big benefits for me.  1.  I don't worry about using my arm (wearing the watch) and hand (right had to push the lap button each turn) to do the job of my thumb.  If you dont' know, you put this on your pointer finger with each turn use your thumb to count laps.  I was frequently not hitting the lap counter with my watch.  Now I have piece of mind when I swim that I am getting an accurate number of laps and times.  All of which allows me to focus on my swim stop thinking "did I hit the lap button".  Scott

Thank you! That was just the kind of feedback I was looking for. Going to order one right now.

I tried one and didn't like it.

I use a watch and take 100 splits.  32 splits vs. 128.  Do what whatever gets you through the swim.

Definitely physical.  I don't eat breakfast before working out in the morning.  I'm normally laced up and out the door around 0500-0530 so breakfast isn't really feasible.  I had two gels during the run and a third that I didn't use.  Not sure it would have made a difference to use the last one.  My legs (quads) were getting really sore towards the end and I figured it was better to call it quits since I hadn't run as much over the last two weeks as I planned.  I think this was the right call because I'm just more sore this morning then I normally am after a run.  I am happy about hydration, I think I pretty much nailed it.  I have a water bottle that I carry but I feel like I have to ration myself for anything over 10 miles.  Since the route was several out and back legs I brought a second bottle and left it at the start.  I grabbed it at the start of the last leg and it made a big difference.  I'm also glad I filled it with hot water because it was so cold when I picked it up that it probably would have frozen if I hadn't!

Only question now is what should I do next weekend?  I was planning to do 16 this week and 18 next weekend.  Since I didn't make it to 16 would 18 be too big of a jump?

Had time to weigh my panniers loaded with work stuff (what I take to and from work on the bike everyday).  Holy crap.  They weigh 35lb. headed to work and 27 home.  I empty over a half gallon of water and lunch and stuff.

And I finished the week with 98 miles on the bike, though I was a bit of a slug in other respects.  It seems I've acquired (reacquired) my ear infection this week.  Should be better next week.  Gotta make an appt for my ankle again.  I don't want to trash it; maybe PT will help it or something.

Stay active everybody!  and have a good weekend.

Hey gents!  First race for the group this year is in the books.

My report is here.

For those that live in colder climes, what do these (brutally) cold conditions do to race times?  I'm trying to gauge whether I could have gone 1:16 this morning if the weather was halfway decent.

Great job 14 is fairly chilly, was thrilled when i checked the temp today and saw 39 for the first time a couple weeks. I cant comment on how the temp affects average race times but that cold wind will definitely make you feel like your not really breathing.

That is right you are live in Alabama so you are a Auburn or Alabama fan.  Which one?
Had a good ride today.  I had planned on riding yesterday but it was just to cold. It never got out of the 20's - 30's wind chill here yesterday.  I rode this afternoon and did 40 miles.  I have to pick up my miles I have dropped over the last few weeks on biking miles.  This is primarily due to missing my weekend long 50 plus mile rides.  I won't get one in this week either we are flying to Charlotte Thursday.  I am going to get in 3 bikes this weeks.

Bama, but I think everyone is these days.  I hear alot of Auburn clothing has been donated to the homeless.  Bandwagon fans.

Awesome - thanks!

Had a mega kick swim workout today.  3000yds of swim goodness.  I had tons of stamina today - probably because I had a big lunch.  I was ripping out sets.  The only one I timed (the pool timer was broken) was a 500 yd set in 7:05.  I'll take that.

Wavering on my bike trainer workout.  I need to get back at it, but am still trying to favor running until my half in February is complete.

I had another crappy run this morning.  I'm tempted to lingering illness but I think it's more of a mental block.  Looking at my logs it would appear that I had a good run (1 mile warm up, 3 tempo run followed by a cool down).  Only problem is that I was supposed to do 4 miles at temp pace but I psyched myself out of it.  I feel like I've been doing this a lot recently.  I used to be very good about just sucking it up and doing what the plan called for.  But recently that's not the case.  I'm not sure if it's the fact I've been sick recently, this nagging head cold, or something else but I'm starting to get really annoyed with myself.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help me stop talking myself into shorter workouts?

Drew, I'm struggling with that myself sometimes.   I wish I had the answer.

Going to try and get my 1000 time today.  I'll be on the treadmill first I think.  It's just easier to work out the clothing sitch that way.  And I'll have an excuse why I'm not on world record pace.  See y'all.

OK.  My today is over.  Total just over 20miles bike, 2.75 mile run(ish), and 1200 swim.   I did 1000 nonstop in 24:08, but I'm sure I could have gone faster had I done that before the other stuff.  Now I sleep, lest I lose both coherence and sanity.  I feel great. (and the ankle, shoulder, recent ear infection, mild cold are all feeling better).

Have a good tri day.

Great job getting out there.

I did my run last night very late after getting my daughter to bed and finishing the endless meeting I had yesterday. I am supposed to ride and swim to day, but the rain we are having may inhibit my riding. I may have to go the stationary rought.

Good luck all.
