charlotte hobbs - 2010-01-04 10:12 PM Hi Josh,
if your group is still open, i would like to join.

i am 52 and have participated in 2 sprint triathlons, 1 century ride and 2 half marathons in past 3 years.

Family Status:  married and 3 kids - 14 year old son, and 12 year old twins - son and daughter

Current Training:  Half marathon focus on March 7th with a 5 K and 15 K between now and then.  Bike just got a trainer for Christmas so loving flexibility of cycling while at home.  I have not swam since fall 2009; swimming is my least favorite.

2010 Races:  Half marathon - March and 2 sprint triathlons.  i would also love to have enough time and energy to train for olympic level

Physical Challenges:  need to lose about 10 to 15 pounds (current BMI about 24.3); recurrent Achilles tendonosis/tendonitis

Mental Challenges:  staying motivated when work (prof at college of medicine - do clinical and research), family juggling is struggle; however, when stop training - old body - starts to act really old

Why I want to join group:  get ideas for new techniques, training tips, and to facilitate consistency and motivation

thanks.
Welcome to the group, Charlotte.

Hello all, welcome to those who just joined us.  Well my trip was cut short to the pool.  Kids are out of school.  Just the least bit of snow and it is called off.  You guys up in New York would laugh at when they call it off.  Anyway feeling alot better since the kettlebell workout, tell you right now it kick my butt!!! lol.  400 yards seem so long for my swim part.  Those that have done it I am stressed about it- does it go by faster on race day when you are actually doing it?  I cant do 50 meters without having to take a breather.  I think I am in trouble.

Qua17 - 2010-01-04 8:40 PM Hi Group - I am stoked to be able to join y'all and I am sorry to be coming in so late.  Thanks for having me!

My name is Dave and I live in the Boroughs around Boston.  I'm a teacher and am blessed to have a great wife and three amazing kids (9 7, and 9 months).

I have been a runner my whole life - I ran my first 10K when I was nine and my first 1/2 Mary when I was 11.  All that pounding early on and the fact that I'm incredibly tight has led to a lot of over use injuries.  For about the past decade, I have been hampered by ITB problems and then I discovered a new level of pain when I got Plantar Faciitis while training for the Marine Corps Marathon.  I finished the race but my frustration got the best of me and I basically gave up exercising.  Without the excercise (and with an intense love of Oreo cookies) - my weight hit 255 and my blood pressure was so high, I started having chest pains.  So, in April, My PT suggested that I give triathlons a tri and I loved it.  I started out so slow and was able to do the Buzzards Bay Tri in September in 1:40.  I then did the Wrenthem Du and was excited about getting is shape and losing 40 pounds.  Unfortuantely in November, I managed to reinjure myself while building up my miliage and I haven't done any serious training in since.

In joining this group, I hope to accomplish three goals.  First, I want to get back into shape and drop a good chunk of my weight and bring my BP and Cholestrol down.  Second, I want to do the Hopkinton Tri in May and maybe do three or four more sprints during the remainer of the year.  Finally, I want to end this crazy cycle of injuries.

Thanks again for letting me join and I look forward to supporting you in the coming months!
Welcome to the group, Dave. Check into that Hopkington race soon, I think it is Sold out if it is the same one I was looking into. I also in the Burbs.

I checked today.  They still have last year's info up.  The website said registration for 2010 will be in January.  I am on their list so I will let you guys know when they open registration.   That was my first tri ever.  I missed it last year because it was a week before my first HIM.  I am planning on doing it this year.  We should have a good group.

This is why you are the leader, thanks

Yes, it does seem to go by much faster on race day.  Don't panic yet.  Keep positive about it.  You'll be fine.  If you have to slow down or stop, flip over on your back and float a sec til you can catch your breath then get going again.  Just remember how great you are going to feel knowing you completed it!Laughing

When I started practising I couldn't swim 30 feet without needing a break.  So of course I choice my 1st race to be OWS in the ocean.  I was nervous about the swim even though I had been practicing like crazy at the venue.   Race day came - the waves were BIG...I took a deep breath and dived right in.  My mind kind of just shut off and I swam from buoy to buoy.   It was over before I knew it.  It was over before my husband knew it.  I passed him on the beach on the way to T1 - he didn't see me coz he was too busy looking out to sea!    IMO - it was over to soon.  I was actually having fun out there!  So don't worry about it and just have fun.  If you lose time you can always make it up on the bike and the run!

I chose to not "race" anyone that day but just put one arm in, then the other!  I figure slow and steady!

rbriggz - 2010-01-05 11:59 AM I'd like to join if this group is still open.

This will be my third tri season.

You are lucky number 13, and with that we are closed again.

Please post some info about yourself.

Something about myself...i was running out to lunch and wanted to get into a group before it closed. I know these groups fill up quickly.

Name: Bob
Age: 45

Married 21 yrs, 2 teenage children

This is my third Tri season. I've only managed to get in one full sprint each season. There is an off-road series every tuesday night in Farmington, CT that i've been running (got 4 to 5 in each season). Great practice for transitioning, etc and it's just a lot of fun.

Each season i've had challanges with injuries. Last year was a hip injury that devoped while training for a 1/2 Marathon.
The previous season is was knee problems (ITBS - self diagnosed).
In general, just doing too much too soon without paying enough attention to the weak links (core training, strectching, etc)

I've learned a lot about listening to my body and managing injuries thru training over the past 2 years.

I got interested in Triathlons while training at a gym that used spinning as part of it's fitness training. I bought my first road bike a couple of years ago to train and i absolutely love getting out on the road with it, even tho i've only used it to race twice, i ride 4 to 5 days a week in the summer.

I'm looking for a new mountain bike (mine is circa 1987) to use in the off-roads which are a total blast.

I grew up on a LI Sound Beach and have always been a strong swimmer, but never a fast one. I'm learning.
I do love swimming (but not smelling like chlorine).

In addition to triathlon I play tennis, golf, snowboard and play guitar.
Oh yea, i have a job too. You have to pay for this stuff somehow.

Since starting triathlon training i've grown more and more dependant on Yoga practice.
For weeks yoga was the only excercise i could do because of various injuries.
I've discovered that in addition to developing physical aspects (core strength, flexability and balance) yoga has been great for developing mental focus. (So that's my yoga pitch).

Looking forward to getting thru the season with some more races. I would like to complete an OLY this year.
Previously the swim is what scared me away, now i'm hoping that i can get myself up to running 6.2 miles w/o a hip or knee issue.

Hi all,
a beautiful morning at the pool! Must send a pic of our local- the Brunswick Baths- a cool innercity pool with loads of character! This morning the hot air balloons were out and about and floating right over us- quite cool.
Did a good set- right now focussing on getting my stroke rate down- my goal is 40 strokes per 50m- currently sitting between 45 and 49 when I really try.
Can't wait for tomorrow- take delivery of my new (secondhand bike)- really want to get out on it on the weekend- first roadbike I've had for over 5 years- exciting.
Hope everyone has a great training day...

Thanks. Great to hear from you. As far as the yoga goes. I rarely get to a class, but i usually get 4 or 5 morning sessions in per week. Generally just 20 to 30 minutes. I find that if the day goes bad i still feel like i got something accomplished. Plus it's a great way to start your day. Luckily my kids are in HS and they get on the bus at 7am which gives me a little time to do something before getting ready for work. And of course, i have to get up to get them out of bed (which gets me out of bed).

Once you get into a groove you'll find that most of the time you didn't had before was wasted deciding what you should do and if you really had the time

Glad to hear that you found a Gym! Best of luck tomorrow nite.
What do you plan on doing when you get there?
You might want to have a backup plan as well in case the equipment you plan on using isn't available. The gyms are a bit crowded this time of year with all the New Years Resolutions.
Don't get discouraged. The crowds will fade pretty quickly

Have FUN !!!

>>"We have four children 4,6,7 and 9! 1 cat and three goats!!"

If you can handle all that, this should be easy!

As far as the swim goes, i think you'll be surprised at how quickly you build your endurance. It's not even that you are building that much endurance, but as you learn to swim more efficiently and relax you use so much less energy than when you first start out. Which is good, because you have to bike and run after

Seeing how we are on the subject of pool time.  Personally I am getting close to nothing on my swim work outs.  Pool at the local YMCA is way to over crowded.  I know it will slow down in a couple of weeks after the college group goes back to school.  And the people who will soon tire of the exercise routine.  So am hoping for a good work-out plan once that time arrives.  In the mean time am putting in a lot of wind trainer and running time--any advice on work outs that might prepare my entry into the pool more enjoyable? (remember you are dealing with the senior of the group)

Hi everyone!

I did my first real run today on the treadmill.  Nice and slow - one 13:30 mile then I stopped.  Archilles feel great. spent some time stretching and doing some strengthening exercises after.    I can't wait to get outside to run but I get ahead of myself.    It really is one step at a time!

Hey Steve:
I just double checked the Max Performance page and what I think you saw was last year's race page.  Registration is due to open up later in the month.  Thanks for keeping me informed.  Once I start running again - we should go for a short slow run.  Have a great week!

whiskyride - 2010-01-05 9:34 AM

NAME: Dustin Dunaway aka. Whiskyride

STORY: I am 37 years old and have always wanted to participate in a triathlon. In the “used to years” I was a collegian trackster that earned a scholarship in the Pole Vault. In 1997, I fractured two vertebrae, thanks to a drunk driver, while serving in the USAF at Luke AFB, Phoenix Az. I also broke it again during an exercise while stationed at Cannon AFB New Mexico in 2001. Now it seems the only thing I am good at is making excuses. I have a relatively docile job as an Operations Team Leader for a major Oil and Gas Company in Texas. I have the time to work out and the support from my family, but haven’t used it like I should because, I have no accountability to anyone. That’s why I am here.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to a very supportive wife of 15 years, four kids, (2 boys=12yrs and 4yrs) and (2 girls=9yrs and 5yrs).

CURRENT TRAINING: I am just starting.

2010 RACES: I am signed up for several events this year that progressively get harder.

1. 3M Half Marathon 01/24/2010

2. The Cowtown Half Marathon 02/27/2010

3. PureSport Rookie Triathlon 05/09/2010

4. Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3 06/27/2010

I have told everyone I know that I will be doing this.I want to be held accountable. I know that I am not going to win, which sucks, but the idea of coming in last is a great motivator. I hope it establish a baseline and build on it.

WEIGHT LOSS: After my second accident I have struggled with weight problems, I have managed to lose 20 pounds, but have a ways to go. I will do this and cannot imagine the idea of failure!

Hey Dustin - Dave aka Qua17 here.  I too have suffered from injuries and have spent more time on my couch than I have on my bike.  I too am trying to get back into shape this year.  I am more than willing to help you stay with it as long as you will give me some crap if I don't follow through.

Deal?

skymedx - 2010-01-05 1:36 PM Hello all, welcome to those who just joined us.

Hey Melissa - I promise swimming will not only get easier as you continue to train - but you will be surprised by how quickly you'll be getting out of the water on race day.  You're adrenalin will be pumping and the buoyancy of the wet suit will help too.  Good luck to you.
