deehtz - 2010-03-03 8:00 PM Last weekend I got to go to some bike shops and test out some rides.  This Saturday I am getting  bike fit measurements, and will test out some more bikes.  FUN!!!

WOOHOO!!!

What are you leaning towards getting?

LOL    Leaning too many ways!!   I started out liking the Specialized Dolce Elite, then Felt ZW series, now I am looking at Trek and Giant.  I hope to know a lot more after my fitting.  As far as components, I would like at least Tiagra shifters and rear derailleur.  I could really feel a difference between Sora and Tiagra.  Unfortunately, I probably can't afford 105s.  Oh well.

I have a cheap road bike with Sora shifters. I wish I had better, sometimes they have a mind of their own.

Sometime this summer I will be purchasing a bike and it will have better components.

All this bike chat and Bill is nowhere to be found.  I bet he's been twitching and wondering what we've been up to.

I have a really nice road bike.  Specialized Roubaix Comp.  Fit is only so so though.  The women's geometry bikes don't fit me because of my height/inseam so I bought a men's 58 cm.  Had it customed up (changed out the handlebars, shortened the stem) but I still feel too stretched out over the top tube.  I need to go back in and see if they can work with my fitting or find a tall woman who's had a custom frame built who wants to upgrade and get rid of her old bike.  Money mouth

I am anxious to buy a bike, and I see great deals online, but I have to go get fit to one. My Trek road bike I had and my hybrid were 52cm. The generic bike I have now is 49cm, and I am stretched out on it when I'm on the aero bars.

I want something that fits me well so it takes the pressure off of my back. A lesson I learned the hard way... don't go by color, go by what works for you.

deehtz - 2010-03-04 11:41 AM Sounds like a nice weekend.   especially the long bike ride

As soon as I get home tomorrow from work, we will head to the city (about 1 1/2 hour away) to spend the night with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law.  Saturday my B-i-L will take me to a few bike shops while DH works on a project for his brother's business.  Back home Saturday night or Sunday morning if project goes well.

If I get home in time, I will meet a couple of gals at the Y on Sunday to do a "practice tri".  500 yds in the pool, 12 miles on a stationary bike, 3 miles on the treadmill.  Should be a kick!  Smile

Are you going prepared to buy a bike or are you just still looking?

The practice tri sounds like fun!

I have some money saved for the bike, so if I love it and it's in my price range, I'm good to go.  But this is a big purchase for me, so my mind is little reluctant to make the commitment.  It's weird... I am excited to get the bike but afraid of making a wrong choice as far as fit and quality.

Plus even tho I have the money, part of my brain keeps telling me all of the more "practical" ways I should use that money.  However, I am pretty good at ignoring "practical". Undecided

First, get a bike that fits you well.  Second, get a bike you love.  You should love looking at it to the point of wanting to keep it in the house vs the garage.  Mine is decorating my family room on the trainer at the moment.  I just can't bring myself to ride in the basement. Last, get a bike that fits you well.  If it fits and you love it, you will ride more.  If you ride more, well....you know the rest of that story.

This times eleventy billion!!!

ironannekidd - 2010-03-04 5:01 AM I have to give a big shout out to my son today.

My baby boy is 10 today!

If I was at home I'd post a picture, maybe later this evening I can do that.

No Hot Pockets for dinner either.

He saw a commercial that they have Star Wars toys in Happy Meals at McDonalds. Guess where we're going.

That's ok. Whatever he wants today. My daughter and I made a cake last night. She decorated it then with my husband. He can icing a cake better than I can.

Cake tonight at my house if you want any.

Happy birthday to your son!  Hope he has a great day.

Glad he decided on something other than hot pockets.  Although I might go for the hot pockets over McDonalds.

I don't know about that Neal. Those fries are pretty darn tasty....

kcarroll - 2010-03-04 5:45 AM Morning Ghoul's.  Got 2200 in the pool this morning.  It is going to be a beautiful day here today and I'm thinking about sneaking out early to run hill repeats tonight.  Will see how things play out at work.

I got a nice bike interval session done last night.  Wore my Ghoulie shirt just to try it out.  Will save it now for when I need race mojo.

Lookin good Kim! Nice workouts too!

I'll don't think I'll ever buy a bike on line.  I'm still not entirely certain that we couldn't have found a better solution for me than the 58cm.  But, I was just getting back into biking (had done a bit of riding 15+ yrs ago).  I bought it at a good shop, but I think the person that was helping me is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.  If I buy another bike (who am I kidding about if...I already have 3) I know who I'll work with next go-round.  For the moment though, it is the engine that needs some work.

Hey Katie! Way to get out there last night. 3 miles is 3 miles, and it sounds like you got some extra HTFU points as well. Well played Ghoulie

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away it was nothing for me to jump on my bike and ride 20-30 miles 6 days a week. Of course I was single then and didn't have kids.

When I was in college I had a $1200 Trek road bike. It was a nice bike. That was 15ish years ago when I bought that.

When I decided to do a triathlon I didn't have a bike. I bought a cheap, like $600 bike online. It served it's purpose, I'm still riding it, but it doesn't fit the best.

My doc at the pain clinic, who is a cyclist and a runner, she doesn't like to swim so she won't do a tri. Highly recommended a tri bike for me. She told me the geometry of the tri bike would take the weight off of my spine and neck and put it on my shoulders. Sounds good to me, and it gives me justificiation to my husband for spending the money.

If I am going to spend the money on a nice bike, and one that will help my back, I really want to be properly fit on it.

Even if I have a new bike by Black Bear, I will probably still take my cheap roadie.

The place I'm going to tomorrow has some Cerevelo's on clearance, but I think they are all too big, 56 is the smallest I saw last time I was there. I can ask though.

mndymond - 2010-03-04 12:50 AM So this is my blackberry update before I go to bed...Tired...workout tonight was friggin ridiculous hard...30x1005 on 2, 1 on 1204 on 2, 2 on 1203 on 2, 3 on 1202 on 2, 4 on 1201 on 2, 5 on 120Didnt make 4 or 5...switched to paddles and pull bouy and made 4, but died by 5. 120?...could have done it on 125...but i have this ridiculous mental barrier with 120...always have..Anyways...so i was driving home contemplating my decision to pursue ironman lake placid in 2011...i literally had just started to think about it at this one light when "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath comes on...i havent even heard this some before...think its a sign?

Yes. Yes I do.

BUT

Where will you be in your studies in 2011. You already have tremendous workouts, but will you be able to do the workouts and keep up with school next year?

Ironman's will always be there. School comes first at this point in time.

I know that was no help at all, but the decision is yours to make, not mine.

Second year is very similar to first. I don't get into crazy clinical stuff till 3rd yr. It will be a last hurrah of sorts!

I just find it quite odd...Who knew there was a song called Ironman by Black Sabbath..haha

Um... lots of us metalheads Seriously though, if you have one last year of "calm" (which is a VERY relative term for you ) then go for it. Just make sure you think hard about the amount of volume you're willing to commit to on top of your studies. I'm confident you can do it if you want to, but remember to HAVE FUN!

I don't know about that Neal. Those fries are pretty darn tasty....

Tom, I am with you on those fries.  Pass the salt and ketchup please.

Their fries aren't even as good as they used to be, and they're still the best FF fries.

And I just saw an article not long ago saying they're the healthiest fries you can get at a fast food joint. Well, maybe healthiest isn't the right word. How about least bad for you?

AFTERNOON GHOULIES.

WHAT A FRIGGING GORGEOUS DAY.

its cold at least the sun is shining.

give me hope that spring is INDEED on the way.

back at Mad Mex working hard....or hardly working.

at this point i was banking on a book/finalized tour, just waiting on Joseph to come into town.  but now the fact that we've moved the dates, we lost some of the venues, and now i feel like im starting from scratch just a bit.

ah well.  cest le vive.

sooo much nicer being here at Mad Mex than at home.

and like usual i meet people - two guys, on their lunchbreak from work.  of course.  who else would i meet.

both college grads.  looking for work.  ones an electronics engineer (new to me) and the other is a music major from a VERY presitigious school here in PGH.

its a shame that these guys are qualified and cant find work.

they are working in a warehouse for the time being.

the one guy (the engineer) was saying how this is the first steady job he's had since he graduated.  the engineering jobs he got only lasted for a few months.  how sucktastic.

i seriously would NOT want to be a guy out there looking for a job.  the market SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!!

ive met more men lately who are inbetween jobs, some of them home while their wives out there working, not by choice just out of necessity.  WTF???

i guess its a reality that i havent had to face, thankfully.

still.  it made me pause hearing their (others) story thats for sure.

im uber grateful for my kids dad who has been gainfully/consistently employed.  it certainly has brought a certain amount of stability and security in my life that some people just arent afforded.

even moving forward, w the situation being what is....

im afforded a great deal of security and stability and i know that my children will be WELL cared for.

thats a good feeling for sure.

but i know that is not everyone reality thats for certain, even more so after today.

one was a cute boy.  he wants to see me again.  imagine that.

ironannekidd - 2010-03-04 5:01 AM I have to give a big shout out to my son today.

Tom, I saw that same article.  Unfortunately they said that was if you order the small.  Now, I don't know about you, but if I am splurging on some fries it will not be the small.  And I will allow not a drop of guilt to inhibit my enjoyment of that large order of potato heaven.

Honestly, I think the biggest issue with fast food is that it has become the primary source of so many people's food supply.  Yes, the portion sizes have gotten larger but it is not as if the stuff has ever been healthy.  The problem is today people eat b'fast, lunch and dinner via the drive-thru.
