iowagander - 2010-03-25 4:33 PM Looks like I just missed everyone. Just got back from my wife's doctor appointment here and I'm letting my late lunch settle before I go for my run. I'm gonna warm up by making my son do a half mile or so with me. He's got entirely too much energy and doesn't like to go play outside. Bad combo. Maybe I can wear him out enough so I don't have to listen to another lecture about all the different Batman villains during dinner again!

HEY!  are you having dinner at my house again??  we have those sort of lectures on a fairly regular basis.

have you gotten out for your run yet?

and how was the appointment?

kcarroll - 2010-03-25 7:23 AM So I was looking through Runners World from a few months ago.  The Marathon issue.  It had rankings for all the *best* marathons.  Best: for families, spectators, amenities, value, BQ, scenery etc.  The #1 overall race is in Missoula MT.  It's in July and unfortunately I can't make it this year, but 2011 it is going to happen.  Anyone want to run it with me?  BTW, still keeping fingers and toes crossed for the NYC lottery.

Also, full disclosure....I was born in Missoula.  I have some very cool cousins that still live there.  It will be a party weekend.

I read this article as well and this race sounded awesome. I love the idea of destination races. Unfortunately they're just not very practical for me right now. However, someday I will have time for races like Missoula, Big Sur, Alcatraz, Coeur d'Alene, etc. I also want to do a tri in Alaska for some weird reason

So, aside from the destination, what makes a good race, a good race? Is it the volunteers? The swag? The post-race food? (I could really use the input for the marathon we're puting together this fall).

AMY.

YES.

YES.

AND YES.

just sayin.

Well said I also like what Kim said earlier about thinking about what you want to be known for. That led me to a couple thoughts:

-What's the route like? Is it hilly? If so, then awesome volunteers at aid stations and good spectator accomodations at challenging parts of the course would be great.

-I know that you're in a pretty beautiful and rural part of the country. That got me thinking about how some races strategize their on course entertainment. The San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon for example is a very urban race, so there are energetic rock/blues bands every mile or so and the whole thing is like a big party. At Big Sur, it is a very rugged, coastal setting so they are famous for having a pianist at about the halfway point overlooking a bridge and a Japanese drumming corps mashing out a strong beat at the top of the worst hill. Play into the "vibe" of the area and you'll be fine.

-Swag and post-race food are great too, but I've always had the most fun when both had a very local feel. Try and get some mom-and-pop type restaurants to set up food stands post race.

-Is there a title sponsor or main beneficiary charity? The races I've been around that do a lot for the community and local charities always have a really great feel to them because everyone wants to help and be a part of doing something good.

I hope this helps a little Amy!

Thanks Stacie. I've actually thought a lot about this kind of stuff because I think being an RD someday would be great. I just don't have the time for anything like that right now. I actually have an idea for a race I'd like to see in my neck of the woods. Maybe I can pitch it to my LBS and get a small think going...

Sounds like a great time! Cookie cakes are awesome - I haven't had one in a long time. My wife's birthday is coming up soon as well... maybe I can convince her she wants a cookie cake!

Good point. Good tomatoes are a must for good pico. Does your store have good mangoes and peaches at the moment? If so I could give you a sweet mango salsa recipe. It's a good dip as well as a great garnish for chicken and fish.

I just realized... we haven't done a whole lot of food talking lately. Now that Spring is on the way we'll need to do some more sharing. It's always more fun cooking when it's nice outside.

OH MAN.

I WISH.

the BANE of my exsistence.

the lack of good quality produce year round.

the only fruit edible this time of year, that is not RIDICULOUSLY expensive are the apples and bananas.  occassionally you can get a decent orange.

the rest.......

OI VEY.

A WASTELAND.  IM TELLING YA.

this would be why im moving to SD ASAP....that and a few other good reasons.
