flip18436572 - 2010-06-02 6:20 AM The storms are keeping me from working out.  Running in storms and biking in storms are out.  Pool is closed when I have free time.  This stinks.

I feel your pain - I'm going to be switching up my schedule and doing some of my training at night. It's too bad because I really enjoy my early morning work outs but unfortunately my wife hasn't enjoyed them.

We'll see how it goes....

PS The night run went very well! I ran at the track which was partially lit due to people playing on the baseball field. It was cool and comfortable out, made for a nice run. When it gets hot & humid out around here I'll be doing this on a regular basis.

Seems that way, the last couple of weeks!    But after this Saturday, I have a break in the race schedule until the end of August...

Ok, so my friends are trying to talk me into a tri sooner than I was planning, but I might do it anyway.  I'll think of it as a training session.  Only thing is it's a mile lake swim.

Carly you should do what you are comfortable doing, but don't let the lake scare you. If it was me, I would say sign up and commit to finishing the race. Not sure when it is scheduled to run, but if you do a few practice swims in the lake beforehand you should be ready. I got really nervous before the my first one, but now just look at them as a gauge of my training, and another benchmark for my weight loss. Good luck with your decision, but i say go for it and have a good time!

I agree with Dave, Carly.  Sign up, get some practice in, and have fun with it!

Do you feel you could do the bike and run right now? If you can, than you could focus training on the swim and just maintain your bike and run.

These severe thunderstorms are really making it hard to train.  I may have to go to the YMCA and use a treadmill and then bring my bike to the basement and get on the rollers.

As much as I dislike training indoors, you have to do what you have to do when the weather forces it!

Nothing like some hamster training and a good hard ride to nowhere! I as well hate training indoors but cant stand the thought of all my hard work wasted. Kind of brings up another question i have. Do you all ride and run in the rain, or stay out of it at all costs. I personally will finish a ride in the rain but wont start if its raining, but wont shy away from starting if it may rain. As for running I go no matter what, just figured i would ask?

That is exactly my approach as well, Dave.  Run no matter what (unless there is heavy lightning, although that doesn't happen much here), finish the ride if it starts while I'm out, and stick to the trainer if it is raining or about to...

By the way, everyone, my second race in two weeks is now over - I struggled badly.  My race report is posted at the link beow.   Take a look if you're interested.  I find them good to go back to later to see what I was going through at a given time.  This one stands out from the standpoint that I can still have a bad race even after four years of racing, and can still struggle in an Olympic even after completing an Ironman.  It keeps me motivated to keep working...

Sounds like a tough day, love the honesty in the race report, but it is good motivation, and a great lesson for all of us newbies. I am sure you will dominate your next race!

Thanks for the input on the earlier race.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to sign up.  I've had lots of encouragement and since the family will be there, I will be bound and determined to finish.  The girl said it's great for beginners and it's pretty casual.  I think it'll give me an opportunity to experience transitions and such before I hit my first serious one in August.  The app is filled out and the check is in the addressed envelope.  I just need to decide and mail it in.

sending the check in was the second hardest part of my first triathlon, getting up on race day and going is the hardest, but it will be well worth it! Have fun, and dont forget to smile when you cross the finish line!

Wow! That sounded like a long day.

I know not every training day is going to be a great one but I guess not every race is going to be a great one either.

Thanks for the report.

I will run and bike in the rain, but not in thunderstorms.  I will normally try and schedule according to the forecast, but that doesn't always work as planned.

Feeling lazy or something else…..

This is a recovery week for me in my training plan. Last week was a big push for me the weather was hot & humid and my run on Saturday was really tough followed by a long (for me) bike ride on Sunday.

Come Monday morning my body was “feeling” the weekends work outs. I almost went back to sleep on Monday, I just wasn’t motivated to put my wetsuit on and jump in the water at 5:30 in the morning. I did do the swim and it was fine. Yesterday I got up and did a short (4 mile) run but was feeling tired. Today I just needed to sleep in – I got up at 7. I have a bike ride schedule for today I may have to do it tomorrow and just take this whole as my rest day. I always have 1 full rest day per week schedule.

Sometimes I feel like this is 90% mental and 10% physical. For instance on Monday I could have just stayed in bed and not have done the swim. Physically I could do it with no problems but my mind was telling me to sleep.

Does anyone else have trouble with this?

This happens.  Sometimes it really is my body telling me to take a break, but rarely.  Usually it is because I have a lot on my schedule, and I am trying to figure out what can wait and what can't.

Adam - This might be a case of 'listen to your mind' over 'listen to your body'.  You've been working yourself hard, and maybe you just need a mental break for a day or two.  There's nothing wrong with taking a break when you need one.  After a day or two, you'll likely be anxious to get out there again.  Until then, allow yourself some time!
