Pack took care of business, now its time for the Bears to do so as well.  As a Bears fan, feeling pretty anxious about this one...

I had a decent week last week.  Even with the weather, was able to bang out almost all of the expected workouts, and shoveling compensated for the misses.  Tough part of this season for me is:
* A lot of indoor work due to weather/road conditions
* Races are a long way out!

Does anyone else feel this way?  I appreciate the support of this group as it refocuses me every time I read a post.  Good luck on the training week!

What a great Packer game! Looks like we are set up for a good game next week.

At least who ever wins, a team from the Central will be in the Super Bowl! (and it's not the Vikings)

Living in the Wis, I don't have to wait till summer to race. I turn to skiing or snowshoeing to keep me motivated during the winter.

I have a 50K CC ski race scheduled for the end of February, it is a race that has been on my bucket list for a while now.
My skiing hasn't been going as good as I hoped so I might have to do the 23K race and wait a couple years before I attempt the 50K.

Is it the Berky ... my father used to fish around Hayward, and I did the Fat Tire Festival a couple times.  Yeah, it will be a great game!

1:20 minutes on the bike trainer.  Got 67 reps of pushups tonight on my way to eventually doing 100 straight.  Legs were aching yesterday from the friday night spinerval session. It kicked my buttocks. I enjoyed the session though but probably scare the girlfriend away from doing the spinerval class with me.   Hope everyone had a great weekend

Been a while since I posted and all the work you guys are doing is motivating as all get out.  Put in 1100 yds in the pool on Saturday.  Lots of resting Elementary mixed in but the breathing is starting to become more comfortable - that slow down to speed up advice worked.  Back on the tredmill this morning - thank you MLK - and got in a 1/2 hour as I continue that Couch to 5k program.  A little over 6 pounds gone in 7.5 weeks and stairs a work aren't kicking my arse any more.  This is great.

Keeping in mind that I do not own a bike currently, have never done a Tri, and will be doing a Sprint as my first, does a?nyone have any thoughts on buying a high end big box bike ($250) over a LBS bike ($650) now - saving the $s and getting a true and tried road bike if I enjoy the first race?  I am struggling with the concept of dropping $650 on a bike that may only get used to ride with the family later but don't want to kill my enjoyment of Tri #1 with a dog bike.

Oh, and Go Pack!  Time to go to Soldier and take hope away!

Big day today, taking advantage of the day off from work.  7mi running then 2800yds in the pool.  Form broke down as the swim progressed, but I gutted it out.  Workout straddled lunchtime, so I was low on nutrition.  Cramped calf getting out the pool.  All in all, a great workout!  Go Bears!

Erik,

Not sure what a "high end big box bike" is, but that should work for your first race. I did my first race on a Schwinn. I have seen people in races using mt bikes.

Nice workout Justen. We will forgive you for being a Bears fan.

If Rogers has a day like Saturday, the Bears might have a tough time.

Been MIA the last week.  Had to go out of town to teach a course and didn't get my workkouts in.  Started back up today.  6.5 mile track workout (on treadmill) and back to the weight room.

Guys, It has been a while since I posted, just frustrated with the injuries and this calf strain (I think that is what it is) which I think I aggravated it doing step ups in the gym.

I have decided to take this week off from running and let the calf rest.  I have been icing x 2 (should be 3) per day and stretching like mad.  Hopefully I can start running again next week where I left off and have minimal impact on my training plan (although it will impact the upcoming 5K on 2/12 and the Half Marathon on 5/7).

So, workouts done since I last posted:

Friday 1/14 - All body weight session with core
Saturday 1/15 - Bike Trainer (10 x 30 second spin ups)
Sunday 1/16 - Rest
Monday 1/17 - Rest (frustrated)
Tuesday 1/18 - Swim (1400 meters total:  300 easy, 8 x 50 (drill and opp side breathing), 3 x 50 kick, 3 x 150 at base pace, 100m cool down).  Weights (lower body) and core.

I will post this weeks tentative plan on my training log as soon as I get caught up at work (vacation on Friday to get a four day weekend) we are swamped.

By the way, for those looking for a wetsuit, Xterra is having a 50% off sale (I don't have an Xterra but I hear they are good).  Below is the information:

Had to post something, we were on the second page.  Can't have that.

For those still interested, total weight lost for the year is now 3.8 lbs, only 16.2 lbs to go.

Eric, calf stretching with the knee slightly bent will get at your soleus (vs. straight leg which gets to your gastroc). Also think about investing in a "stick" (thestick.com).  Great tool. Also have you seen a therapist about the shin pain in the past.  You may need to look at the shoes you are running in and if you could benefit from a pair of orthotics.

Between work and family commitments I got 50 pushups and a 40 m ride on the trainer. Work schedule again tonight but I will get a run in there somewhere tonight.  Might be multiple sessions to meet training program requirements. thats bettter than nothing or DNF.  New bike shop in town that has Jamis Brand of bikes. Any one in this group had any experience with Jamis. I have read reviews on line just wondered if any one here had feed back.

Great run today.  Weather turned nice.  Sunny and 55 degrees.  JUST RIGHT.  6 miles short tempo pace.  Wish every day could be like today.

Ian,

I am right there with you.  I found that using a foam roller helps tremendously with the tightness.  I have been stretching at least 3 x per day and icing 2 x per day.  I think mine is more of a calf strain and not a pull.  Good luck.

Great time to be in FL. Temp for my run this morning was -5F, tomorrow morning it's supposed to be -15F with -25 to -30 windchill.

Was down in FL this past July, it was usually around 80 for my early morning run.
