Bull - 2013-03-22 3:23 AM

My first Tri is tomorrow morning at nine. The weather forecast at start time is temps in the mid 30's and a chance of rain. I was hoping for better but you have to take what you get. I'm ready to do this. I wish i could have trained a little more but life gets in the way and ther's only so much time. I was looking at the results from the last three years and based upon my training times, i'll be able to hold my own and finish about middle of the pack (hopefully) in my age group. Was going over my bike yesterday making sure the chain was cleaned and lubed, etc. When wouldn't you know it, somehow I managed to break the kickstand. I figured this might be a problem. I couldn't get a kickstand in time for tomorrows race so being a sailor i improvised. I took the kickstand off my wife' mountain bike and luckily it boled on my bike. Looks a little funny but it works and keeps the bike upright. I went for a swim yesterday and i realized that I am swimming now at even a leisureky pace much faster than the swim time i submitted for the race which has me starting near the back. Anyway, tomorrow's the day! Thanks to ecerybody for the kind words, advice and encouragement.

Good luck Bull. You are going to do Great! I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of commentsvabout concern among us about training volume. I fire one week be one. So I'll say to you what I'll say to myself in two weeks - you have it in you. Keep emotions in check. Focus on the goal which is to finish. You can - and will - duo this.

I am looking forward to your victory post on this board.

This needs to be a productive weekend. I have to get 5 hours on the bike. I would feel morecomfortable if I could get another 20 Mile run in and I need some pool time. I am on vacation next week and should be able to work out. But, I have no more weekends left for long endurance workouts. this willbe the last time I do an early IM race (unless I move to AZ).

Finished my first tri this morning. Cloudy and cool around 39 degrees. Fortunatly the rain held off until i was crossing the finish line. The swim was the worst part and my swim times was less than i'd been practicing. The pool was crowded and i wasn't used to swimming in a crowd. I did much better on the bike ride than my practice speeds and the run was about what i expected. I had some problems in the transition from the ride to thevrun. My fingers were so numb i couldn't unbuckle my helmet to save my life! I probably spent a good 3 - 4 minutes fiddling with it. Anyhow, finished at 1:00:25, good enough to finish third in my age group. Now I've got an idea what to expect and hopefully the weathervwill improve so i can get some good training in for my next one in june.

A day off for me today...Well sort of. We got hammered with snow and I spent a few hours shoveling plowing the 4ft snow drifts in front of my driveway and shop. Had a delicious brunch with neighbor friends and now warming up with an irish coffee. Back at it tomorrow with a 40 mile bike/ 5-6 mile run brick to finish off the week.

Inspired by Bull's great race, I am getting excited about my first race in May although here in Colorado it hardly feels like spring time!

Finally some decent weather! High 40's, great day for a long run, got in 9 miles today, nice easy 10min/ mile pace, felt pretty good since this was my longest run so far this year.

Thanks. As a matter of fact I went home and had a couple of home-brews. I brew my own beer and had a couple of Amber Ales.

Thanks to everybody for the kind words and encouragement. I'm proud that I did it! When I weighed 350 pounds and told everybody I was going to run a triathlon not many people thought I'd follow thru. I have to give the most thanks to my wife, she got on board, put up with my withdrawal from junk food, kept up with my training and lifted me up when I was down. She's my number one supporter, coach and cheerleader, she's a keeper for sure! I've got the whole family hooked now. Next month the family unit my wife, daughter and son in law is running a 5k and our grand- daughter Brianna 3 1/2 is running her first one mile fun run. I guess you can say I'm addicted and looking forward to my next Tri in June.

I managed to "save" the week.  I started to get a cold last Sunday and since I was traveling for work on Tuesday, I decided to take the week off to recover.   I  only have about 7 weeks to IM Texas and so I did not want to go without training but at the end of the day, it was the right decision.   I went out for a painful 12 mile run yesterday and today I got in 60 miles on the bike so the week was not totally shot.  It is evident now that the IM will be a challenge to finish.  Heat is a major concern. I have been watching the temps and TX is already in the 80's and we are in the high 30's low 40's.   Hope the weather will turn soon here in the East.

Have a great week everyone.

Have a great week everyone.

Good job bouncing back. Yeah the heat is on my mind for the Boulder 70.3 in August as well. I often think that when you are able to get out and train, even if you are tired or don't feel like it are the days that build mental toughness and pay off in the end. Plus I always feel better about myself afterwards.

Hope I don't sound too arrogant but another solid week for me. Even though I took one extra day off I was able to still get all of my workouts done the way I wanted to. My mental toughness workout was yesterday where I did 40 miles on the bike with a transition practice straight to the run for 6 miles at a decent effort pace similar to my goal HIM run pace. I just keep dreaming of crossing the finish line and that is my motivation! Smile

I am doing a lower volume recovery week this week since Thursday-Saturday I am taking a mini vacation in Ft. Collins and going brewery hopping on some rental bicycles with my wife. It should be fun!

I think I'm addicted.  When I got this wild idea a few months ago that I would do a triathlon little did I know where it would lead me.   Now I've got a triathlon behind me and it was such a great experience that I have triathlon on my mind 24/7.  My every free moment is training, conditioning, studying about the next tri and how I can improve my performance and longer events, maybe even an ironman in mmy future.  At 55 time isn't exactly on my side, but if nothing else I'm like a pit bull, determiend and once I get something in my mind, come hell or high water, I'm going to do it.   I know I sound like a broken record, but I can't express enough how much the encouragement and help I've gotten here has helped me.   And to think a year ago I couldn't walk to the end of the block without stopping to rest.

I'm happy for you, Bull. Don't we all live for moments like that? So what next? A race that includes kayaking?
