Just was very excited - completed my 5 mile prep race before Richmond took 4th overall female - 1st master - 32:06 on hilly course (6:26 ave pace) - over 1000 runners!! 4 weeks till Richmond! C U there! Michelle Michelle, Welcome to the insanity that is our group! I never though we could have a lurker...it makes me feel special. :P You should be excited! Very excited. That is an awesome job you did. You did some serious spanking....rock on. Oh...I got some info on the bike course. Hills....lots of hills!! I don't think I'm going to get a chance to ride it beforehand, but my friend said it is smart to at least drive it. I'm getting in the day before so we can make a field trip of it if you'd like. I believe another friend of mine, Beth, is going to do it too. Again...awesome job and don't beat me too badly in Richmond! |

No clue what to expect. Its about 12 miles and a portion of it is open to traffic. Cash, How'd your race go? I want to see a race report! I've got my first ever time trial next Sunday, so I'll try and give you a heads up on what I experience. |

Cleveland, Ohio | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Dan: U R Special!! Count me in for the field trip - my training partner Roger, he is driving in with me - we will be driving Friday - takes about 7 hours from Cleveland we're guessing between 2 & 3 arrival time. As we get closer - I'll email cell # and we can connect in VA! HILLS - no so good on hills with the bike Hopefully they are not too scary! 2nd season cyclist as is Roger. He also ran a great race smokin' 29:29 (5:54) 40-44 men - fields are crazy deep that was 7th in age group 19th overall - in 40-44 men you had to better 5:40 pace to make the top 3!! Glad I'm a girl - and I run like one too M |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full They stole my freaking shoes! Did the tri today, will post more about it later. Fairly happy with the results. But after the swim and award ceremony, I went back to the transistion area to get my stuff. And my bike shoes were missing! All my other stuff was there and on the towel where I left it. Off to Performance now to buy bike shoes. Maybe its a message from God. Dan said get rid of the mtn bike shoes, and get road shoes. I liked the mtn bike shoes because I could walk in them. Well now they are gone. Left my info and description of bike shoes with the race director, but highly unlikely I will ever see them again. Rat Bastiges. |

Plus...they should of still been attached to the bike anyway. :P Give it a week and lets assume it was an honest mistake. After a week...we'll set up a search party and billy club someone. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full They were mtn bike shoes, how the heck are they gonna stay clipped to the bike. Plus they were nice to run in from dismount to rack area. Probably 50 yards or so over concrete and grass. Educate me. I can buy carbon soled Cat 1 road shoes for 95 dollars. Normally 170 dollar shoes, double stitched. But my pedals are mtn bike, so would need to buy road bike pedals too for another 130 dollars. These have a top ratchet fastening rather than velcro plus 2 velcro. I could buy Shimano carbon soled mtn bike shoes and not change pedals and still walk in them during transition. I will probably never place in a race unless less than 3 age groupers show up. Is it worth it to get road shoes? Plus if you have road shoes how do you get from rack to mount line and dismount to rack, in socks or barefoot? Some tri's here you could go 50 -100 yards on pavement with lots of gravel chunks and when it is 90 degrees like today, the ground would be pretty toasty on bare feet or socks. I could also buy Tri shoes with stiff soles but not carbon fiber |

I hope it was an error and someone honest realizes it and gets them back to you. In regards to your question about keeping shoes clipped to the bike. There is a method where you leave your shoes clipped in. You rig the shoes to stay in position so as you leave T1 (either barefoot or with socks depending on what you prefer) you start pedalling with you feet on top of the shoes once you hit the bike mount line. As you get going you slip your feet in and strap them down as you are pedalling. After the bike segment is finished and you are heading for T2 you follow the same steps (slip your feet out, pedal to bike dismount line with your feet ontop of your shoes) and run barefoot/with socks. Here is a link to a site that explains how to rig your shoes so you can just hop on and goe one you hit the bike mount line after exiting T1. http://www.trigearreview.com/forms/Article.aspx?REVID=217 I haven't tried this but I think I'm going to practice it for my tris this season. From my understanding it takes practice to learn how to do it efficiently and without crashing! |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Michael, I think the bike shoes clipped to the bike requires a loop on the back of the shoe that you can rubber band too. I think mtn bike shoes would be hard to leave clipped to the bike, they would just flip upside down. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Only got in about 2 1/2 hours of 3 1/2 hours planned for last week. Bike crash injuries had me on the couch rather than training. Race ok was yesterday so will train more this week. Plan this week 6 hours. Think I will buy carbon soled mtn bike shoes tomorrow. That way I don't have to buy new pedals too, and I can walk in them for transitions etc. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Race Report All on the UCLA campus. Run 4 miles in 33 minutes exactly. Ave 8 :15 so not bad considering it was all up or downhill. My best is 7:02 for flat one mile or 7:23 average for a 5k. I had expected 9 minute miles so was pretty happy with the run. 4 out of 8 in my age group. About half on dirt trails and under trees. Garmin only measured 1.54 miles and google maps shows lots of diagonal paths that we didnt take showing it wasnt picking up satellite signals. Bike 10 miles in 39:43 average 15.1 mph. Not happy with this time or speed but happy with the effort. Race instructions were not to pass on the down hills or corners. Course was narrow, and every down hill had 90 turn at the bottom. Course was 3 repeats of a loop. Very few flat parts. Very few parts where I felt comfortable on aerobars, but also skinned area on right arm is where I would be on the arm rests. Had to brake a lot on downhills so I could turn the narrow lane at the corner at the bottom of each hill. Dumb layout, but probably what was available to race director. Lots and lots of turns up hill flats and down hill. 6 out of 8 in age group. Left turns were ok, but still afraid to lean into right turns after Monday's crash. Swim. 10:49 for 400 meters. 7 out of 8 in age group. Not good time, but in line with my 11 :30 times for practice swims. Need lots of work on technique. Did lots of side stroke. Got side stitch early on in swim. Swim mask leaked some. Some crawl, was ok but fatigue from run bike took away the courage to crawl more. Just wanted safe breathing. 199 put of 375 overall. Wasn't happy with this at first, but considering this was a college meet against other colleges as well and they are in these figures too, guess its not too bad. 6 of 8 in age group stinks, but just have to train harder and race smarter. After swim came back to transition to find bike shoes were missing and never found. |

Regina, Saskatchewan | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Hey Cash, congratulations on the race. Its all about learning what you are capable of and deciding what you can do to improve. You will only get better, keep up the training. I have a pair of mountain bike shoes, I like them when I'm just kicking around through town for some nice easy rides. Can stop for coffee, etc. You will always use them. If you continue with racing you can get the cycling shoes and clips at a later date. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Dan, you would be proud of me. I bought carbon soled mtn bike shoes. Yes they are clunkier than road shoes but I dont have to change out pedals and I can walk in them a bit. Also bought a car rack. and got my rear wheel trued. Apparently knocked it out of true in the crash. Maybe that was part of why I was so slow on the bike. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full Ok I don't suck quite as bad as I thought. I would have finished 21 out of 37 in the 30 -39 age category. Or ahead of 2 collegiate tri team members Or 36 out of 43 in the 19 -29 age group or 13 out of 18 in the 40 -49 age group. Got bike wheel trued today, so should be faster for this week ends time trial but it will be hilly, and I have to drive to find hills here. So I will suck at that too, but its my first time trial, so I will have fun. |

Expert 928 Kaneohe, Hawaii | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full I haven't forgotten about you guys either! I'm waging a comeback despite the demons of sloth and gluttony that constantly tug at my confidence and motivation. I've lost a lot of fitness since December but I've always been lucky in that it comes back pretty quick as long as I stay consistant. Thanks to all those that kept inspiring me in my blog even though I wasn't present or responding. That kind of stuff really helps with the whole "guilt-trip" aspect of not training. I mean that in a good way. I hope you all are doing well in your endeavors and I'll try to be more active both in my training and in BT. Thanks again! |

Extreme Veteran 405 East Aurora, NY | Subject: RE: Marvarnett's Group - Full I have 12 weeks until my first attempt at an Oly distance tri. From what I hear the lake I'll be swimming in is traditionally cold so a wet suit is a must. I'm looking for feedback on different brands everyone has tried and would recommend and those that perhaps I should stay away from. I really like the two piece concept of the Desoto black pearl but won't ignore one piece suits. Dan I see you have a black pearl, what is your opinion it? Thanks! |
