Glad to be back. Off to do my second of the 2 X swimming. And the fins suggestion works wonders , give it a try.

gator416 - 2008-01-11 1:37 PM Les, What dvd did you find on netflix? I've looked, but have never seen anything to use with the trainer.

I like tv shows on DVD... 24 is a good one.  So is Lost.  The plot moves fast enough that it keeps your brain occupied.

ADD?

I haven't watched much TV, either live or on DVD, since starting training last year.  Well, except for Heroes -- I always recorded that.  Start of the second season has been worse though.

denny.l - 2008-01-11 2:12 PM I believe in fins!! The coach at my swimming lessons made a believer out of me. With the fins I can focus on my form and not use all of my energy trying to propel myself through the h2o. I know you can't use them all the time but I really think they help me to have the time/energy to work on my form.

I bought some fins, I guess I'll start trying them out.  Would be nice to focus on form rather than being afraid of just sinking!

gator416 - 2008-01-11 11:34 AM Congrats Alan! Good job with the run. I know how you feel and I only got past a mile this week. Gives me motivation to keep pushing at it.

Woot, congrats on the mile!!  I did my first one a week ago.  Hopefully it didn't take you 11 months like it did me...

aber4 - 2008-01-10 6:06 PM I had to post this since I really can't tell anyone else because noone else really gives a crap but those who know what it's like. At Thanksgiving my run consisted of about 15-20 min, doing about 2 min running and then 1 minute walk. Today I celebrated losing 25 pounds...AND...did my 3 miles in 26:15...first time I've every broken a 9 min/mile average. The best part was I felt good and didn't feel like I was having to push or strain to do it. Now, I know this may not sound like a lot to some of the runners in the bunch but to this FORMER fat it is pretty important to me. So those of you working your way through the walk/run, hang in there because it does eventually get better. ...and now, back in the pool in the morning! Yeah!!!!

It's impressive as hell from where I'm sitting.  Congrats!  Sub-9 minute miles is a pace I can only dream about right now.  Way to stick with it!

Robyn, I am addicted to LOST... seen them all and waiting for the next season to start. I will definitely watch tv on the trainer, I was more looking for something like a spinning class to use at home.

I just installed the bike computer that the LBS Dood gave me for free. Unfortunetly it does not have the cadence counter on it. Oh well free is free right. (And I bet a few of you were thinking I was up at the bar huh! (Okay the thought not only crossed my mind, but it sat there for quite a while.)

For you swimmers... when the training plan calls for warm up swim, what does that call for? Then it says swim freestyle... But what do you do for warm up in the pool.
Since I am starting the pool this week I better find out.

Before I moved to Michigan, I had a TV but it wasn't even plugged into the wall....  But I rented TV shows specifically for long trainer rides.  I'd go nuts without them.

How does a trainer compare to riding just a stationary exercise bike as far as the workout is concerned?

I can't believe I said "Smack Down!" Damn, if people form Alabama weren't stereo typed already LOL! But just so you know, if they mess with you, they mess with me. And if they mess with me...

THEY MESS WITH THE WHOLE DAMN TRAILER PARK!!!!

Yay, got in the pool today for the first time since floundering around trying to breath and gasping for air. The pool was actually warm today so that made it better. I went 225 yrds. I don't know if that is any good, but it felt good. I have a lot of work to do. Hopefully the TI swimming book I ordered will help with the form, but I'm just stoked I made it into the pool. Time to go lay some mulch now.

Ok... 225 yards is 225 yards more than I did today! It is great... you can then set your next goal to go 300.

Great job!

WTG Gator! You know, those of you learning the TI way now will soon be WAY ahead of me. I'm gonna have to bust alot of old habits ti be able to form new ones. I think it would probably be easier if I was a beginner swimmer than being an old swimmer with bad habits.

I know exactly what your problem is! You aren't pacing propperly in the first lap, and probably aren't breathing full complete relaxed breaths

I'm not sure about the pacing part...I seem to be really trying to focus on going slow. The breathing I'm sure is part of it as I don't think that is very relaxed, in part because of technique. Everything I read says don't lift your head out of the water and I think my roll is so poor that I don't have much choice...which kills any momentum each time I breath.

Sorry so long ahead of time...

You sound so much like where I am right now, it's scary. I do all right my first 25 to 35 and then - BAM - I'm dying for air. Even when I go really, really slowly and do bilateral breathing every 3rd stroke, it doesn't seem to help. I also end up having to take my head pretty far out of the water, too.

I just finished reading Eric Harr's book "Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week" and I may have figured out my problem. Most of what gets us forward is with our arms, yet I'm still kicking pretty heavily - even when I'm going slow. Also, and I haven't tried doing this 'cause I haven't been to the pool since, but you're supposed to swim from your hips. As a former softball player, the analagy he gave made sense to me. When you throw a ball, you use your hips and rotate into the throw. Now, imagine that sand is covering you right past your waist and then try to throw. You wouldn't throw very far. Now I just need to figure out how to rotate in water! Ugh! :-)

It could be you and I are expending energy in the wrong places. Even if I were doing better, though, I think I might still have breathing problems. To counter that, I've started yoga and after the first lesson I was aware of how much "breath potential" I'd been missing out on. Hopefully, with all this in mind, I can begin to improve.

I sure do hope this helps you in some way. We WILL get past this...!

Glad you are in the challenge.
